Alright, this seems like a fair question for this board, but if not please excuse my intrusion.

I am doing a writing assignment for a War As Experience class, and I need to do an analysis of to wartime photos.

Preferably depicting "the horrors of war" or some sort of potentially emotional subject or similar. (Ex: raising flag on Iwo Jima, Spanish Republican Soldier Dying, The girl in Vietnam whose clothes got burned off her).

However, those were the pictures they used as examples, so i need some new ones. Any help?

Preferrably something not suuuper well known, but something i could write a few pages about.

since this is /hr/ the images of course are going to be large, but dont worry extensively about size/resolution if you think its a good pic.

    thanks

pic related. general type of image I'm going for.

I could tell you a number of reasons why people are not answering you ... namely that /hr is NOT A REQUEST BOARD.

However I will throw you a bone ... just go to wallbase.cc and type in "war" or some shit.

As a former vet I applaud the academic effort, but do yourself a favor and read a book and watch a movie.

Read: The Old Breed by EB Sledge
    http://www.amazon.com/Old-Breed-At-Peleliu-Okinawa/dp/0891419195

    Watch: Restrepo
    http://restrepothemovie.com/

Once you've read this book, and watched this movie then realize that you have no idea what war is like until you've been in one. I don't mean to sound elitist but your class is not "War As Experience" it's "War As An Academic Exercise".

Also know that Information and Propaganda is War. The most well known images of war are a continuation of the war through less than lethal means. If you need to analyze war time photos, make sure you do not stop at the surface. Who took the picture? Where was this picture published? What was the intent of the photographer?

I would argue that the most realistic pictures of war are Robert Capa's surviving pictures from the DDay landing. He risked his life as a wartime photographer landing with the troops on the beach. He took hundreds of pictures of the landing and the intense fighting. He survived, and shipped his film to be processed. But the technician that was developing the film messed up the chemicals and melted the emulsion from the film. 11 badly damaged negatives survived. Photo related.

    http://www.skylighters.org/photos/robertcapa.html

War as experience? War is a waste.
    >> Anonymous 12/01/11(Thu)20:58 No.1440514
    OP from >>1440513 here.

Robert Capa was both a journalist and a propagandist, this was how he fought in War.

Do you research OP. Get understand what you're looking at and do not stop at the picture.

    Understand the intent.

If you get a chance watch Wag the Dog as well.

"The Old Breed" was fucking amazing, but "Restrepo" was just okay. The book it was based on "War", by Sebastian Junger was far better than the documentary. Like any movie, the book is usually better.

Agreed. The book was better. I had the opportunity to meet Tim and Sebastian briefly. They mentioned that the stories from their movie and their two books showed different facets. Tim had another picture book called Infidel that showed a third side of the story. Picture Related.

An amazing effort at trying to tell a difficult story. http://www.amazon.com/Tim-Hetherington-Infidel/dp/1905712189

I would think dragging dead Iraqis around behind your vehicle is a good way to make more enemies to fight the next day. Doesn't seem like a great idea no matter who killed them.

That's an awesome photo, but I think it could be staged. the exposure is perfect, it's really convenient how the image is so well framed, and that the focus is on the soldier in the background.

But it's such a subjective argument with no solid information it could be either. and just because they're wearing different uniforms doesn't mean that they aren't just wearing a dead enemies uniform for the sake of an interesting photo.
You've always gotta be aware of that kinda thing, at least raise that question with some of the photos you use
