3.71 MB Hurray, more abandoned buildings Anonymous 05/29/10(Sat)06:45 No.1015326
After two successful threads about abandoned buildings - one hospital and one textile factory - I now have another building to offer you photos from. This morning at around 4:30/5:00am a friend and I entered this place. It's bigger than it looks here, and spans several different buildings. After almost 6 hours of exploring we left, having barely covered half of it. We'll be going back, but for now I have lots of photos to show you.

We immediately made our way to the top floor and sat and watched the sunrise through the window.

I forgot, before we go into the building, we had done a recce of the building the previous weekend and found a door that was unlocked and sheltered from the road. This was out point of entrance. Unfortunately, it let down into this basement with no way in to the main building, so we had to go out and walk right to the other side of the place to find another door.

    our point of entrance*

Unfortunately most of the place was completely empty. I tried to skip taking photos of empty buildings this time, unless there was something interesting about them. These upper floors were in relatively good condition, but the ground floor was completely fucked. Pikies have been in stripping the place for copper.

The mystery of the strange metal around the roof is revealed; it's track for this little cradle. Having thought about it, that sort of thing is probably common on all big buildings, but we don't really have tall buildings in Scotland. This one is the tallest for miles around.

Now seems like a good time to mention the value of owning a flashgun. Many of the rooms in these photos were you can't directly see a window were pitch black, including this one.

At this point, after my friend had wandered off, I heard a very loud scream of "OW FUUUUCK!" I casually strolled through to the next room to see him hopping around with a tack sticking out of the bottom of his shoe. It had gone through the shoe and into his foot. I was in hysterics (who wouldn't be?), but I managed to get a photo before he pulled it out.

After I'd sufficiently recovered from my laughing fit, we pressed on. Notice anything weird about this picture? (probably not because they're difficult to make out in this shot). Leaves. Yes, leaves, on the fourth floor of a six floor building. We found quite a few patches throughout the building. No idea why.

Okay, getting towards the cool stuff now.
While wandering down a corridor that looked like any other, we opened what appeared to be a cupboard door, to be greeted by a metal ladder doing up into a small pitch-black hole in the roof. Climbed up and this is what we saw (by torch light, there was no light up there at all - once again the flashgun saves the day).

Buuuut before we get to my favourite part by far, here's two more rooms. This was a conference room of some sort. There was a seating plan on the wall, for about 10 fancy looking chairs to be placed in an arc in front of this giant screen. There was a hole in the roof for a projector. Lots of interesting bits and pieces were laid out on the tables at the front.

So this is the part that's labeled 'Restaurant' on the various maps throughout the building. I guess they had to provide the employees with a place to eat since there aren't any shops near the building at all, apart from a huge Asda, but people would get sick of buying sandwiches there every day quite fast.

    This area was very posh.
It's not obvious from the photo, but there's a cupboard or something behind the dark wood on the left. It had two doors which didn't budge, plus a track in the roof, and another door on the opposite side. I wondered if it was a divider, but it looked more like a cupboard door to me.

There is security around the building. At least, there used to be pretty good 24 hour security around it, until BP sold the building. Now there's a group called Monarch Security who are famous for being useless around here. Basically, a Monarch Security sign means there is no security. The building is scheduled to be demolished within the next year as far as I'm aware.

    I do, we didn't - and don't ever - take anything.

    For three reasons.
    1. I'm not a thief, and that stuff doesn't belong to me, even though I'm aware that it's probably going to be destroyed. I'd consider taking something of historical significance, but apart from that: no.
    2. It's nice for other visitors to see this stuff. Nothing worse than visiting a site after everyone has pinched everything and it's a bare hulk.
    3. If you get caught, you'll more than likely get away with a warning. If you get caught and you've taken anything from the building, you'll be charged with theft and have a criminal record.

Thats a sound isolation booth, you use them for recording people, you can see the black rubber on the inside of the door to make an air (and noise) tight seal. The black panel on the front are audio connectors (there would be a mic inside).

Doesn't explain why they would have one? Perhaps they did some voice over work for company media?? It must of been used fairly often, otherwise you would just rent time in a proper studio

Those aren't switches, they're just patch panels. The back of each connector would be wired to network points around the floor. The switches would have been in the right side cabinet. To activate a network point you patch the from the lefthand side to the switch on the right. Normally the switches are lease from whoever the company contracts their IT network to. They would have come out as soon as the building was vacated.

    nice pics OP!
It's a shame you object to taking shit - I'm pretty sure I saw a Global knife in a bucket in one of the pics, the one with the curved pizza cutter thing. Those knives are great, and they retail at about $80+ (AUD).

Yeah I would have taken heaps of other shit too:
computer/electronics junk to sell or use,
interesting stuff, like papers or random gadgets/junk (I saw a IR viewer in there),
basic commodities to sell if I'm desperate (copper wiring etc...),
FIRE EXTINGUISHERS - endless, ENDLESS fun can be had with these.

...yeah so I'm a massive cunt for taking shit... but I can run fast as well :).

We found this one completely by accident. Last weekend we went out in search of abandoned buildings. We had a completely unsuccessful day, but as we got back to the city, we drove past this building (which we drive past every day), and one of my friends suddenly said "Oh yeah, you know that place has been empty for years". :O
So we drove closer, and lo and behold it's empty. Queue a lot of "HOLY SHIT". This place is 10 minutes walk from my flat, so I was especially surprised I'd never noticed before.

That one was a private bathroom, it had "No Entry" written on the door.

Maybe it was made for an executive who was disabled. Didn't notice those bars in any of the other toilets.

    google "long island psychiatric hospital"

there are quite a lot, because back in the day (late 1800s/early 1900s) pretty much all of the mentally unstable were sent to Long Island, since it was mostly fields at the time. The main four hospitals were King's Park, Pilgrim, Central Islip, and Edgewood (part of Pilgrim). Pilgrim was the largest, at one point housing over 10,000 patients. Parts of Pilgrim are still in use, but there are abandoned buildings on the complex. These places were their own societies and had many buildings (King's Park had about 150) ranging from nurse staff housing to power plants to morgues.

You can find tons of pictures on all of those places with a simple google.

tl;dr Long Island is an abandoned psychological hospital goldmine

pic is a shitty exterior picture I took of King's Park's infamous Building 93 (Was medical/surgical if memory serves)

I gave you the names of all those places AND even told you to google, there's plenty of information on those places. Since you didn't feel like doing that, here's some Central Islip:
    http://www.opacity.us/site94_central_islip_state_hospital.htm
    King's Park: http://www.opacity.us/site3_kings_park_psychiatric_center.htm
    Pilgrim: http://www.opacity.us/site23_pilgrim_state_hospital.htm

Most hospitals are in the towns of the same name. King's Park is in King's Park, NY, Central Islip is in Central Islip, NY etc (Pilgrim is in Brentwood, however)

Part of the reason not to share is idiots who will go there and deface the locations, steal things, vandalize, and generally cause trouble. Not to mention going isn't exactly the safest thing to do. I'm not going to be all "DON'T GO CUZ YOU COULD FAL AND DIE OR GET ASBESTOS CANRER" but I urge you to look into the sites and identify potential risks before you go. As for asbestos, it's pretty easy to get the appropriate masks, and they aren't very expensive (I think mine was around $15, and $5 for replacement filters). Have fun, be safe, and remember the UE motto "take nothing but photographs, leave nothing but footprints"

    OP here.

Just been back and discovered loads of cool stuff I hadn't seen before. We encountered some people who were trashing stuff so we made a hasty exit since we're going back in the morning anyway.

Totally exhausted, will post pics tomorrow.
