New boards added: /asp/ - Alternative Sports, /gd/ - Graphic Design, /lgbt/ - LGBT, /out/ - Outdoors, /vr/ - Retro Games

As with all new boards, these are being added on a trial basis. If they don't pan out or go unused, they'll be removed.

not mine by the way. I just save these for inspiration.

Too bad nothing like this can be used in a real project as it will be hard as fuck to support all browsers (esp. IE). It's still really cool nonetheless.

It's not a matter of telling IE users to fuck off, but rather warning your clients that certain features will look worse by default on IE, and if they want me to work around them in order to make up for them, it WILL cost extra.

I'm truly sorry for their lots, but time is money.
>>

flatUI is not restricted to specifically that. you can have a flatUI design be amazing and not specifically have things look like that.

If you were specifically talking about THAT set, then yes it would be hard. but FlatUI doesn't have to be. ;)

Here's an upcoming layout, I'll delete the pic soon. Everything always looks better on my end, the implementation is always too busy to put in everything I want (it really upsets my "autism").
>>
A question for you kids.

Do you web designers create the visual stuff in PS and work on the code as well ?

I'm 30 years old and I don't know a thing about design, but I am in fact a front end developer with 7 years of experience now. I work on mostly mid size projects, $75k-$150k, and a few one million dollar clients.

The design stuff is usually handled by graphic designers who only pump out Photoshop comps. Like the guys at ThreeSpot who is one of the partners of the company I work for.

I've found that becoming truly proficient in front end stuff is hard enough work. But I constantly see young people online claiming that they do both. Is this true ? It makes me feel old and useless
>>
>>2062
That's pretty cool, anon guy. It'd be cool to talk to the people that work on things I see frequently.
>>
>>2075

nowadays it's very common for people to play both the designer and developer role. don't feel old, a lot of people aren't strong in one or the other. but be aware it's a "thing" now, and yes they're generally more marketable.
>>
>>2075
They should definitely be learning to do both, but as a relatively recent graduate myself, I can tell you that at a certain highly regarded program, about 10% actually care enough to do both, while 30% give it a shot but don't care and the rest clasp tightly to working on fashion magazine publications.

You should feel a little bit old. Don't worry about it. You'll die soon! (This was supposed to be funny. Sorry.)

>>2087

I can tell you that people who are professional graphic designers and coders at the same time are extremely rare in the professional world right now. Which is why it always freaks me out when I see young people claim they do both.

Most companies just want you to do one very well.

I can see tripcodes being somewhat useful on this board. If people are going to be posting their stuff, then having an identifier will be good in case someone decided to steal something or claim someone else is doing some shady shit. Of course this happens all the fucking time in the industry, but I can see tripcodes being a natural thing for this board more than any other board.

Extremely amateur graphic designer here, working on some personal stuff, have no job in it.

Probably going to go to school for it since one I have the money and two I'll probably have an easier time finding a job.

Currently just do text work (Pic is an example)

Also designed the logo for cyberfelix.co in like 10 minutes.

I also enjoy drawing a lot and do more cartoon/animeish artwork than actual graphic design.

The main hook for getting into motion graphics for me was the potential for making things that are best described as "exciting". If you are like me, print and web is cool, but when things start moving there is a whole new level of possibilities in play.
Using the proper tools, you can design some badass looking poster, make the typography move around and animate the other elements - it gives things life, a dynamic you don't find anywhere else.

But don't listen to me. One of the first things you will learn about motion graphics is that reading is gay and for weenies: check out these examples on fairly easy tutorials you can follow to get started:
http://www.videocopilot.net/tutorials/
>>
Graphic design, marketing and advertising student.

I do more illustration and plain old image making moreso than graphic design itself, despite being much more interested in graphic design and typography. I actually have the most fun with logo design. I also dabble in a little bit of 'animation' (ie, moving shit around in after effects) and motion graphics. My personal work is typical girly cutesy-wootsie shit but when I get the chance to produce something more 'professional', I love that stuff too.

I'm very familiar with Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign as well as design and composition elements and principles, so hopefully I can give tips on all of those.

I'll probably only post my own work for critiquing.
>>
>>2527
I'm not sure how you'd manage to make more by fixing computers. I can sell websites for around 800-1000 euro and can get one website out per week without using templates.
I have to say there's no real lack of work here, though.

Belgium is just now catching on to the whole digital era, so a lot of small to medium companies and restaurants want websites.

I should really hire a designer at some point. The time I lose by being forced to do graphics cost me more than getting a cheapo art school washout would.

Drop the price down to 600 then.
I've recently cranked out a website with a designed-from-scratch ColdFusion-based cart for that price for a restaurant.
Sure, the site would go for around 1200 normally, but eh, favourite restaurant.

Just ask the customer to refer to you when someone asks about the website and make sure they have a positive experience interacting with you.

For instance, due to the bloke from the restaurant flaunting his website around, I now have 12 other customers lined up for sites in the 800-1200 range.

That actually.. bring me to a certain point of interest:
Many of my customers have tried to make websites via those shitty automated services (Vistaprint etc etc) before, some even through other companies. They all noted there were a bit fearful because they were expected to give money and hope the end-resulted is what they wanted.
Just talking things through with customers, regular updates, listening to their wishes and meeting in person every so often to discuss their wishes has given me shining references. Maybe something to try next time?

>>2721
Ah damn, you're from France?
That explains a whole lot. I have a seriously hard time selling the idea of websites to Waloons as well (the French bit of Belgium). It seems to conflict with their vocally-oriented culture. Or something.

As for doing things for free: There's a problem with this, and it's the same as undercharging all the time: You're shooting your own foot.
Let's say you do this for free and this guy tells someone else. They'll also expect you to charge them nothing or very little. Skipping from, say, 250 to 600 in one go is extremely bad for business.
In the very least, make sure the guy claims he paid 500 for it.

Building intuitive interfaces is the most important part of application design, and lots of developers seem to fail at that.
>>
>>2804

Agreeing with you on that. Something I'm actually tackling at the moment as my company takes on more and more application projects.

Biggest issue I've been dealing with in regards to UI work is taking into consideration client revisions. Mainly cases where the UI is set perfectly and intuitively, but then the client decides it requires some sort of newsletter sign-up form on every page.

Working on establishing 'buffer' zones in the UI for when the client inevitably needs three more buttons.
>>
>>2804
You might want to break that perfectionism habit. The industry only cares about speed

If it looks fine at a glance, leave it
>>
>>2932
Really depends on where you're working and what you're working on. Perfectionism for visual designers is a great trait to have; that drive to get better and do better is important.

Great. I'm supposed to graduate in 4 months, under huge stress and depression, and then I get a whole board dedicated to showing how retarded my chosen profession is. Thanks, moot, I really needed this.

>Introduce yourself, and tell us what you will be contributing to this board? what skills do you have, any demos, live websites

>hi
>humble opinion and questions about ideas
>self taught designer, no formal training, extremely proficient in Photoshop, inDesign and Visio.
>I have acres of publications (catalogs, manuals, advertisements -Local and International-, and even a cobbled-together website) but i'm too private to share it here.

I'm certainly not the most talented designer out there but i've managed to keep a roof over me and a wife's head for 8 years as a contractor.

Believe me, there are ads I look back on and wonder how I kept a job.

I'll fuck around with a trip later, I guess.

Student

Web Design course with a weird balance of coding and actual design.

Most familiar in Ai, decent in Ps, dabbled in Ae. Hoping to get better at It and Pr. Bad addiction to Dreamweaver when everyone still tells me Notepad++. I just like MUHLIVECODE too much. Still a rookie at HTML/CSS.

Hoping to get my coding up to par with this board at least (if we last).

Looks like we actually have potential to be one of the few good boards on this site...

I was in your position a year ago. My advice: start looking for a job right now.
>>

i really love how my passion have given me a bright future.

I'm pretty nub when it comes to web design, but I bring PHP/mySQL to the table and appreciate the art in web design and all of graphic design.

I have done a few simple graphic design projects for people as a side hobby. I am working on logo design.

As for "live websites", www.tfwnogf.com

I really need to learn how to make mobile stylesheets and a cleaner design.

So, pretty much I'm hanging around because I know there will be a good amount of you out there with a good idea and good design that needs a coder to come to life. That's where I will come in.

I'm also 30 years old and I do both the design, then code it. But I started coding websites when I was 18.
>>

There's a big difference between a web designer and a web developer. I know a lot of GD's who also do WD, but there's fewer people who can do web development. Small in-house web design and freelance work tends to be both, bigger companies are more likely to hire someone specifically to code.

Given the nature of this board, this will be one of the very few times I use a trip.

>Oat
>web designer and front end developer (in the process of learning back end development, this php shit is tedious), digital art, only just recently considering graphic design as a possible career option
>7 years of self-taught Photoshop experience, 5 years Illustrator and some rudimentary motion graphics experience
>will likely be seeking more professional advice and providing more practical advise than anything else

pic related is example of work and current WIP which will in all likelihood end up getting scraped. Everything was created in Photoshop and Illustrator.

Incidentally, as I mentioned above, I've only just now started considering my options as a professional graphic designer. When I just did minor projects for fun, I went under the moniker Oat. Should I ditch it and just go with my full name instead?

>>
I'm wary of presenting my professional work on 4chan of all places. I guess I might post some of my side projects here, if I ever get time to finish one of them.

But here's what I can bring to the table anonymously:

>6 years web design and front end experience
>8 years photoshop, consider myself a decent designer but can never achieve anything special
>a few years illustrator for print design when necessary, by no means an expert
>Plenty of CakePHP experience, which I assume is a bit of a niche topic but hopefully I can help out

Looking to see if it's worth switching from CakePHP to Laravel soon. Though I'll probably wait for Laravel 4.

I used to study plastic arts, then I saw they were a bunch of shitheads, so i dropped, then I came into a design school that says it's "integral design" and ohhh boy it's been a fun ride. I've made perspective, figure drawning, art history, design history (I didn't even knew design history tells apart from art history), I've even got some classes on fashion design and textile. It's gonna be fun.

I'd like to have serious discussions about technique and work, the more I learn about how other people work, the more i love to do work on my own.

Pic related, I've never worked with volume, it came out nice

In the UK things are tough. I am good with Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects, Dreamweaver, I even do 3d modelling and animation to. I can also do back ends in ASP and .net but prefer classic really.

Despite all this I've been unemployed for two years this summer since graduating. I apply for tonnes of jobs but I've only had a few interviews, who all said they thought I lived to far away from the job.

Not many opportunities here but I can't afford to move to some where with more work ;_;

Oh god that feel. But at least with this sort of work you can try freelancing.
>>
I did an internship when I was 13 and as a parting gift the head of IT at that company gave me the unlimited license key for their copy of Photoshop 6.

I taught myself Photoshop mostly to make stupid anime wallpapers. I learned to vector with the pen tool after reading some tutorials online and fiddling around. Later I taught myself Illustrator, Premiere, and InDesign. When I got to college I took classes involving all of these but detested them due to how basic they were.

I'm the Technology Director for a medium-sized company now and frequently pick up the pieces for our Director of Marketing, as well as our Director of Communications. They are idiots and have no design sensibility.

I'm 23.

Yea, sometimes I just put my suit on and grab my business cards and go out and give them out to shop owners of mainly independent stores.

Got bits and bats that way, but after everything I've done I feel like I shouldn't have to do this.

Plus you meet some right dickheads this way too. Like a guy said earlier, people expect Hollywood results on a Dagenham budget.

It took me about 2 years of this sort of horrible sales work to get to a position where work comes to me.

And I'm a horrible salesman who detested every cold call, sales letter or shop visit. I'm just glad it's over. Haven't had to look for new jobs for a few years now which I'm very thankful for.

Due to the nature of my job, I tend to do more "low" design. Everything in this industry is over-designed as fuck, and there's only so much class you can fit into a game series about robots and monsters beating the shit out of each other.
