For most people, it's worth $50 a year to not have to worry about antivirus nonsense, and there's plenty of good antivirus programs that cost $50 a year. And a good new computer today will definitely be useful in 15 years. Some people have more than one machine, you know. There's nothing wrong with having an older machine for various uses.
