So I'm a computer & software engineer, I worked IT in highschool, i consider myself tech saavy, but holy shit, I had to look up how to even shutdown in windows 8, what the absolute fuck, were the devs drunk at the time of creating this foul beast?
>>
you couldn't go to terminal and do it from there?
>>
>>35560924
no i could, but holy shit, thought i could just hit start and find a shutdown button, took 3 more steps and a mouse gesture, and i immediately wrote it off as a productive os
>>
>>35560809 (OP)
Jesus. I am tech acquainted (not engineer level but I am experienced) and it took me 5 seconds to figure it out. Take a moment to familiarize yourself with the OS you are using. It is called a brain, use it.
>>
It's a lot easier in 8.1. You can right click the start button and you get the restart/shutdown options.

It's like a shitty version of the start menu minus the apps.
>>
>>35561117
I believe the point is that it's not user friendly. You could learn to use plan9, but it's impractical
>>
Windows 8 is shit, more news at 11.
>>
>>35561117
A mainstream desktop OS should not require arcane knowledge involving invisible corner buttons to perform something as simple as shutting down. Microsoft just made another unforgivably bad product.
>>
why are you wasting your time with windows 8 anyway

stop giving it attention
>>
>>35560809 (OP)
I'm with you. They've just hidden it in a place no one would expect it to be. I can't imagine why they made Windows 8 in the first place. It's seriously not enough of an upgrade from Windows 7.
>>
ITT: Retards who think they're smart talk about how they're too retarded to use Windows 8.

If you were really so smart, you could've made your own shutdown menu program.
>>
>>35561117
>and it took me 5 seconds
I seriously doubt that unless you already saw someone use it.

Windows 8 made me switch to Linux as my main desktop. No regrets at all.
>>
>>35561161
>>35561195
yes and yes, i quite often switch between servers that run just on cli interfaces, unix on some old cnc machines, and hell even mac when im fixing one, and god damn I haven't a worse user interface, hell i even think this clonezilla screen im staring at is more user friendly
>>
It's so easy to press the power button and have windows shut down itself.
>>
>>35561208

>>
>>35561142
all we need is a release date now. come on, microsoft.

my only problem with windows 8 is after a while when chrome in desktop mode maximized, i cannot see my taskbar (which is normally auto-hidden). the only way for me to see it is to change chrome's window size.

I honestly dont see the point of all the hate for metro. I'm not saying i love it more indifferent. For games i like it much more than the old start menu and if i wasnt playing games i wouldn't be using winblows.
>>
>>35561346
i gotta say they really screwed the pooch in terms of IT management, which *was* something they were kings of

(i understand there going to ride of there previous success, but cmon)
>>
>>35561229
honestly i just run the shutdown command.

DISCLAIMER: I am not the person you replied to.

I don't know about calling Windows 8 'unforgivably bad product' in terms of features and such, but the way they introduced metro was inexcusable. They should never have shoved it down people's throats the way they did.

I'm pretty sure Microsoft never intended Windows 8 to ever be used for business. Even if they did, businesses wouldn't switch over that quickly anyway, they'd all move to Windows 7 if they haven't already moved from Windows XP and then wait for Windows 9.

They mostly are.

And some techies tend to be very conservative.

They think something like Windows XP is how an OS should look and anything different is stupid.

For the record, I think the Metro UI needs a lot of improvement in some areas. But I'm glad the old Start menu is gone.

I just installed win8 yesterday.

I just unpinned or uninstalled the shit bloat apps, leave the things I usually have in start menu, and it's the same, only now it uses the whole screen... search function is faster too.

Everything else works the same, I don't understand the frustration besides "what the fuck is with this shit" at the start, but then it's like "ah, ok, welp" and that's it.

The amount of time that Windows 8 looks for SHIFT+F8 is so small on most Windows 8 devices and PCs that it borders on impossible to get it to work."

>>
>>35565098

What I find annoying with Metro is that it basically forces you to downgrade to a mainstream audience that normally takes a minute to read every menu or look for a button.
If you feel at home in Windows 7 for instance then you know how to access things quick and easy in a multitasking way which Metro does not allow you to.

For instance Metro comes with its own version of Skype.
You start it, there are no options to set just spoon feeding your contacts and fullscreen the ability to chat or start a video conversation.

Now just about everyone would during a chat session think; hey I am going to check somehting online or something and have the chat session right next to my browser.

Wrong Metro will not allow you to do that. If you go to desktop you leave Metro and Skype as well.

Instead you need to uninstall and reinstall a desktop version of Skype or anything else if you want to multitask on your desktop.

That sounds like the most ridiculously made function ever.
>>

Makes perfect sense that you like Windows 8, I guess. Everything else you use is terrible so they probably run better there.
>>
In my opinion Windows 8 is not really worth the time to install it. It doesn't offer much of an improvement, if any. Maybe the task manager which, by the way, there are third party tools for that crap.

Anyways at least in my case there's absolutely no difference other than the start menu. Not even pirating it is difficult anymore, I'd place it as an alternate version of windows 7 where some drivers may fuck up (my sound drivers, for instance, would cause latency issues in 8 and not in 7, same ones even).

So I'm going back to 7 because I'm honestly bored of this shit.
>>
Is there any difference on any game? The only reason I use Windows 7 is because I want my goddamn games. Any improvement at all?

>>
Windows 8 is about as intuitive as being thrown in a giant corn maze and having to get yourself out of it. They should have worked more on user desktop experience. There are a plethora of examples. For instance did you know you can hit the start button then just start typing an apps name to search for it? Well there is actually no where on the start menu screen to indicate you can start typing. The user is just supposed to know somehow hey I can type now and search for apps.

One thing I do like though is the new screenshot system. The updates and forced restarts however are annoying as hell. They don't give you the option to pause or stop them now...

Considering how Windows 8.1 is right at the corner, I wouldn't recommend anyone to upgrade to Windows 8. I kind of liked it, but Blue is much more complete.
Windows 8.1, while not perfect, can be used 100% Metro-free. You can make it boot directly to desktop, make the start button display "all apps" like I already said, and for power users the win+X menu is much more easy and comfortable than Metro or even the original start menu (inb4 muh icons muh rice).
Metro isn't terrible, it can be useful. I don't personally mind it, but it can become a godsend for people who constantly use TONS of programs because it can take maybe 10, even 20 times (depending on your monitor) the shortcuts you could have on the old start menu whithout making it unpractical, unaesthetic as fuck or clogged.
I also love the touch keyboard shortcut that you can place on your taskbar, much better than the original on-screen keyboard and it's great when I'm using my keyboard on another PC.

>>
>>35571987
Oh I forgot, if you log in with a Microsoft account (which, by the way, you should be able to make even with a non-Live email), a lot of settings (including a decent number of advanced ones, not just your desktop wallpaper and your user pic) get synced and are automatically set in new installations once you login. It's not groundbreaking, but it's a pretty decent feature. Also, picture passwords are fucking amazing even on non-touch devices.

>>35572035
Your problem, just keep in mind that there isn't a "perfect" OS. Microsoft isn't making a public service, they're making a product - and every product has its pros and cons. There's always the alternative of making your own OS, but I doubt more than a few people here on /g/ would actually be able to do that.

>>35572044
Exactly this. First thing I've noticed when I started using Windows 8 is how it just looks for casuals, but actually isn't. A lot of new features and changes are very practical, they just work differently and need a bit of getting used to them. Personally I would never go back to Win7 from 8.1, and I'm not even a Microsoft fanboy in the slightest.

Not him, but the entire environment is hardware-accelerated by DirectX. Everything runs super smooth @ 60FPS and pretty much zero perceptible lag.

The UI is resolution-independent, with little-to-no modification necessary for app developers.
