It's easier to use and probably less likely to give you issues. It will probably simply work and it will work very well and be quiet powerful, like most apple devices, but the simplicity and power comes at a price of both money and lack of freedom. You can use that to sum up most every Apple device over the past few years and into the future for a long while.

Get a Nexus 7 and you can install most Linux distros in a few taps. That comes with Libre Office.
The only thing that can compare is x86 tablets but those are god awful for the price.

You'd have to be really goddamn invested. The iPad Mini costs $100 more than the N7 for - if we're being REALLY generous - about a third of the hardware. That $100 will buy you a lot of apps, that will run and look much better on the N7.
