Every time you consider buying one and then don't is a lost sale to that industry. So it depends on you. However, conservative estimates say that you think about it at least 50 times a day, costing the mechnical keyboard industry at least $5000 daily. Factoring everyone who has ever used a computer keyboard, the mechanical keyboard industry loses a hefty 10 billion dollars a day.

>Implying I'd pay what ever the extortionate price is these days to watch a film
If they want to blame anyone blame the cinemas for jacking their prices up.

Also regarding software, I'm not going to pay £600+ for CS6 and neither is anyone else who isn't a professional (I mean that as in they earn money from their work, not their skill level). If they lowered the price to even £60 they'd make a shit ton more money (not that they don't make enough already), you can bet for every one person willing to pay £600 there are more than ten people who would pay £60.

As for music, I listen to pretty much everything these days on Youtube. Sure I use Adblock, but the producer made the decision to stick it on there whilst relying on an optional form of monetising.

If I think that the band really deserves my money then they fucking get it. Celeste (French Black Metal) offer all their albums for free (or at least they did when I got to know them) - as soon as I found out they did I ordered all their albums. It's things like that when I really want to throw my money at someone.

Overall though, pirating things is just so much more convenient. I see a movie mentioned somewhere, bam, an hour later I've got the Blu-Ray of it on my HDD.

If the artist got a bigger cut and they had a better delivery system then I would think about buying music.
Also the price should be cheap like $2 for a whole album so it encourages you to collect a big legit library.

Also as others have said, Australia get charged more for the same digital product so they are their own worst enemy.
>>
>>35765331 (OP)
I usually pirate music and movies because it's a better deal, even excluding the money part.

I mean most digital downloads are riddled with DRM and it just not a portable as a pirated copy, why would I spend money on a more limited copy? Not to mention most price are absurd. 20€ for a movie? No, just no.

Services like Spotify are also a better offer, but stuff like Netflix isn't even available in my country.

Software and games are a different story, software I don't buy because I don't need it, all I use are freeware or OSS, except for Windows itself which is given to me for free on Dreamspark. And games I usually get on Steam Sales, because full price for a digital copy is also absurd.

I don't pirate music, because Spotify.

I don't pirate films or series because Netflix and video-on-demand service I have at home.

Why do people say Steam prices are right?
I've went on the site, checked prices of new games, they were the same as in a shop, and prices of used were lower (including shipping). Seriously, if you want old games, a used copy will be cheaper. But a license could prohibit selling a used copy.

Probabky outdated, but whatever.
>>
>>35767078
Because Steam regularly has sales where large swathes of games are available at like 80% off.
>>
>>35766617
If a corporation would do this, they would be breaking the law, which would be detected in case of an audit. Equally, they could pirate a pay-for Ps or whatever, so this is a bad argument.
>>

It's the Steam sales.

i wrote my senior research paper on piracy. it doesn't do as much damage to the industry as you'd think. there's zero marginal cost to the creator. that money gets redistributed into the economy. we live in an age where we all make content for free, and share it with others

I never said it wasnt legal. By buying used games, you arent supporting the developers. just like when you pirate.

reasons I don't pirate as much anymore:

I also pay for software if it's really worth it, but I prefer FOSS.

>Music
Youtube. I would never pay for music.
I would stop listening to music completely if it could make the content industry cease to exist.

>Movies
Same as above. I might go to the cinema if I really have to see it, but I'd rather not support the criminal scum.

They want to squeeze every fucking penny out of you, while shitting on you, collecting all your data and trying to persuade the governments to restrict your rights and then you're the immoral asshole if you won't let them.

Also, location permits? All free. The city of New York let us shut down traffic on four whole blocks for the entire day and it cost us nothing!

Plastercity Digital Post in LA did a stellar job on post-production, considering it was free. Industrial Light & Magic in San Francisco gave us a nice freebie and did stellar VFX work and it looks awesome, but did I tell you we didn't even have to reach in our pockets?

Professionals need software, I get that. It shouldn't cost an arm and a leg to get the software in the first place just because you want to learn. Also, it doesn't help they "update" the software frequently.

Why not donate to the artists directly?
Go to their shows, buy their merch.

What happens on the profits for movies that are showing at $1 dollar theaters? If your movie sucks, not seeing it is not a reason for lack of profits. The movie sucking is the reason for the lack of profits.

I'm 30 years old... this is the same song and dance that's been going on since before I was even born.

When I was little piracy meant buying plain tapes labeled with sharpie from the street vendor on the corner

Piracy's not going away any time soon.
