So why did you switch to a Linux distribution?

I mean, obviously you don't care about games, so why?
>>
I realized windows is written in scratch and I consider that to be unprofessional.
>>
I was going through puberty.
>>
I was interested to see how it works and what Linux actually is.
>>
First time because I wanted to burn a DVD with Nero and it asked for a serial and wasted an entire afternoon looking for one.

Then I booted Ubuntu, installed it and burned my fucking DVD in 2 minutes.

I could have known about Infrarecorder, but well.

curiosity and boredom.

I still have windows installed on my PC for a few games, but most of my time is now spent on debian.
>>
I haven't yet, but I am thinking about it. Can't decide which distribution I should try.
>>
You mean you have a windows install and a linux install

Just how poor are you
>>

This
>>
>>35633447 (OP)
I didn't.

Linux is shit, and for man-children.
>>
initially it was to get better performance from shit hardware, but then I got a better laptop and installed GNU+Linux because I fell in love with the way everything just werked. Package management and multiple virtual desktops by default are two features I really love.
>>
>>35633658
try them all. distro hopping is the true linux experience.

...until you realize it's a waste of effort and you settle on ubuntu or fedora and leave it at mostly default configs.
>>
>>35633447 (OP)
slack -> winxp -> ubuntu -> win vista (ha) -> debian/suse/centos/fedora -> ubuntu cause it just werks with decently standard hardware.

i never really fully switched because there are just some things i can't do without windows thanks to idiot vendor lock in.

so i still have a (unpaid) win7 vm at home and work and an (unpaid) win7 install at home for when i want muh gaymes.

otherwise, i'm a programmer and scripter and webdev professionaly so i like my OS-as-IDE
>>
my computer couldn't run games anyway and linux boots faster and is generally more responsive than windows. also linux is prettier
>>
>>35633728
Oh, and the fact that my webcam works out of the box. With Winderps, I always have to install some third-party nagware or some shit.
>>
because i had some ram go bad on my computer and i couldn't game or run windows anyway but i still wanted to browse internet and look at porn

I'm feeling adventurous but not that adventurous. I don't like Ubuntu though, so would Fedora or Debian be a good choice?

>>
I'm stuck on the windows phone windows PC bandwagon. I'm already switching my e-mail to lavabit. All I need to do is drop the phone and get a Linux distro.
>>
>>35633447 (OP)
I am a professional Sauerbraten player. I get better FPSes on GNU + Linux.
>>
>>35633870
Amazon ads and data leaks. Might sound ironic from a Windows user but if I am to try a new OS I'd like an improvement in terms of MUH PRIVACY. And yes, I know it can be disabled, but just the fact that it's there in first place doesn't comfort me even if I would disable it.
>>35633850
I'll probably try that then.
>>
Because the BSODows nuked my laptop. Linux: It just works.
>>
>>35633966
xubuntu doesn't come with it at all. unity is the only problem. ubuntu derivatives are completely fine
>>
>>35634005
Hmm, alright, I'll check it out too.
>>
>>35633966
sudo apt-get remove unity-lens-shopping
>>
>>35633813
why don't you like Ubuntu? this is important for picking a good distro

if you just didn't like the interface, you can apt-get install xubuntu and just use XFCE instead.
>>
>>35634038
it's xubuntu-desktop
>>
>>35634038
or just install xubuntu instead.....
>>
>>35633966
Linux Mint is pretty much ubuntu with some extra software packages and codecs, and it doesn't install Unity or any of the Amazon shopping dog shit. You should try the Cinnamon version, and if you don't like Cinnamon install KDE and XFCE and a billion other DEs until you find one you like.
>>
>>35634059
Except XFCE is a massive pile of shit
>>
I refuse to pay a yearly fee for clunky, bloated POS unlockware. And yes, Windows is going Annual. Fuck that.
>>
>>35634068

>>
>>35634051
shit, my bad

>>35634059
well if you already have ubuntu installed in the first place like i assumed he does, it's easier to just install xubuntu from that
>>
>>35634082
less bloated than Unity, besides, he doesn't have to use it if he doesn't want to

The next Ubuntu doesn't even have the shopping lens, or at least not yet
>>
>>35633579
Same

also I wanted to see if i could hack into my own Router using aircrack
>>
>>35634072
but you just said to apt-get install xfce...
>>35634085
i was under the assumption he had nothing installed yet. my mistake
>>
>>35634097
>Less bloated than Unity
Let me guess: you tried Unity in 11.04, decided it was shit, and then posted on g about how bad it was, forgetting entirely that it's now not a performance hit at all

I was through with windows xp, my system was dirty fucked up like all old windows zp installations are, then I catch some annoying and aggressive scam virus, so I tried oobangoo and find out that linux is quite user friendly and is more modern than windows, it's even more user friendly than windows. And you don't have to pirate stuff, everything is legal, for free and just werx. I stick with oobangoo OS.
>>
>>35633813
Linux Mint
>>
Had to have Mint for work. Fell in love and experimented with other distros. Never turned back.
>>
Because I get 5-6 hours from my laptop with #! and 2-3 with windows when using it to take notes.
