So what's so great about Linux?
>>
apt / yum / urpmi
>>
Choice, that's about it.
>>
It's lightweight, doesn't necessarily monitor you, typically open-source meaning you can look at source-code and tell what software does, and are free to change it however you like - making it more customizable than other operating systems.

Will also run on pretty much any peice of hardware.
>>
Choice, speed, price, flexibility, usability, community, at least.

Windows is utter shit.

And so, Linux.
>>
>>35403655
But Linux is fucking shit too. Windows is much better because you have more programs and games to work with. There's a reason Windows has always had the most market share you know. ;-)

What would be a viable alternative?

don't ridicule yourself and mention Windows or MacOS

Since Windows and Mac OS doesn't fit my ethics andthus make them not a choice for me, I'd have to say:
Everything about Linux is great. It's the only OS I use or would use.
Well, that or BSD.

If you're using unity without disabling the shopping lens, yes.

any linux pro here? I have debian and use GM965/GL960 integrated intel graphics.
Why does my laptop slowdown after using an emulator (vba-m and zsnes) after some time? It even stays the same after closing them down.

I don't think this happened before on my last install, I even ran counter strike 1.6

The great thing about linux is the freedom of choices it provides, from building a system from the ground up (Gentoo/Arch/Debian etc), to using a pre-built distribution that rivals windows and osx in terms of quality (ubuntu and other prebuilt flavors).

the downside of linux, as it always has been, is user friendliness. Even now a computer novice installing ubuntu could fuck up his install easily within minutes of installing just by messing with the settings files without knowing what they are doing.

Yes there is, and the reason is that back in the day Microsoft signed agreements with many computer manufactures resulting in Windows coming pre-installed on nearly every not Apple computer. This has led to the majority of computer users becoming comfortable Windows rather than GNU/Linux or *BSD.

tfw it takes me less time setting up arch from nothing than it does windows
>>
>>35404443
That's a common argument from Linux users but the last time I set up my Windows 7 was two years ago.
"Distro-hopping" is a non-issue.
>>
>>35404443
the guy is a tard, most linux setups are easy unless you do gentoo or linux from scratch
also
>one month to learn terminal commands
>>
>>35404453
Nobody mentioned distro-hopping.
>>
>>35404453
distro-hopping isn't an "issue", you don't have to do it

also, you can keep all your settings between installs

i went back to arch just a couple days from funtoo, it took me about an hour altogether to switch
>>
>>35404467

don't forget about ZFS on linux!
>>
>>35404494
Yes there is, windows 7, 8, 98, etc. They're all distros of windows in a way, but you can't hop between them with out some errors unless you've got a very minimal install.
>>
>>35404539
zfs is delicious

i can't believe i used other filesystems for so long, they feel archaic next to zfs

I don't care about ZFS to much, and never used it. And it's something present in every serious OS, so it's not something "great about Linux". Besides, the support isn't perfect since the module is developed outside of the main kernel tree.
I'll start caring about this stuff when btrfs is marked stable I guess.
By the way, what would you use to migrate my system from ext4 to e.g. ZFS, rsync?
>>35404488
Well pulse is available on other OSes, including Windows. Systemd is indeed cool and Linux-only.
>>
You can rice desktop and put anime wallpapers on it. Than you should post desktop threads with other neckbeards.

>I don't care about ZFS to much, and never used it. And it's something present in every serious OS, so it's not something "great about Linux".
Yeah I was going to say "It's not really a linux thing but..."
>Besides, the support isn't perfect since the module is developed outside of the main kernel tree.
Yeah, a lot of people have issues with it on Linux, I've never had any though.
>I'll start caring about this stuff when btrfs is marked stable I guess.
I've heard about brtfs being pretty good and as good as zfs, can you tell me more?
>By the way, what would you use to migrate my system from ext4 to e.g. ZFS, rsync?
You're going to need to format, or atleast I did. So yeah back it up with rsync.
>>
>>35404692
zfs does a lot more than btrfs
