I know programming languages and shit but I don't know much about specs
They tell me to learn what the specs are such as was what ram is and shit
anyone mind helping me out tomorrow is my first day by the way
help me out /g/
>>
Give me your fizzbuzz solution and I'll help you.
>>
if you cannot assemble a functioning general purpose computer with spare parts from radioshack you are not allowed to call yourself programmer
>>
first time posting here not sure how to post sorry
Public Sub helpme()
For n = 1 To 100
Select Case 0
Case n Mod 15
f = "helpme?"
Case n Mod 3
f = "help"
Case n Mod 5
f = "Me"
Case Else
f = n
End Select
Debug.Print f
Next n
End Sub
>>
>>35631756
Now a days anyone can plug shit together and watch a youtube video
>>
>>35632018
I won't help until you post a lazy solution that goes up to infinity, sorry.
>>
>>35632075
Just help me out :(

>>
>>35632206
BAHAHAHAHAHA

fucking plebe, why would you even pretend to work on an infinite tape? master race modified harvard here bitch
>>
>>35631434 (OP)
>best buy computer consultant
>doesn't know computer specs

no surprise here.
>>
>>35632033
That's exactly the point he's trying to get across.
>>
>>35631434 (OP)
You don't need to know specs, just ask your customer their budges, and choose the appropriate products
>>
>>35632270
My point exactly, my co-workers only know what they read on the fucking pamphlet
I actually want to know my shit
>>
These are the people Best Buy hires? No wonder it's such a shit chain.
>>
>>35632296
Pretty much what everyone in my department does
I actually want to know my shit
>>
>>35632307
why did you get hired as a computer consultant without basic knowledge of computer hardware?
>>
>tfw i used to work at a call center and had to deal with these best buy idiots

at least youre trying, op.
>>
>>35632356
No fucking idea, they say they will train me but they're just throwing me in on the floor
I know the basic shit that I could get by on
I'm just waiting to get my employee discount
then im out this bitch
>>
This is quite hilarious, and yet people do their computer shopping at department stores. I walked into harvey norman and only one bloke knew what the go was when it came to certain parts over the phone. I was in there for like 2 minutes then was lolnope and fucked off out of there.
>>
>>35632404
I totally feel you on wanting to know what you're doing.

nobody likes to be asked a question by a customer and then you don't know the answer, and look/feel like a complete jackass.

you've dug yourself a hole by accepting a position for which you have no knowledge, and now you're gonna have to use this as a life lesson.

good luck to ya.
>>
>>35632397
Thanks bro
appreciate the little love I'm getting here
>>
>>35632307
>ram speed is more important than cpu speed in the general case
>1366x768 @ 11" is okay, @ 17" is a fucking ripoff
>APUs are better than intel HD for general use, worse for batter
>never sell an optimus, they use a nasty memory hack that barely works to do the multi-gpu setup
>touchscreens aren't bad, they just lack utility. they are cool as fuck though
>ultrabooks are generally overpriced, but 400$ for my wife's asus q200e was a steal for how much she uses it
>never sell an all-in-one if have any self-worth. they are overpriced pieces of shiny shit that are hard to repair and break and the slightest breeze. plus, gorilla arms

want any more?
>>
>>35632457
But he sells prebuilt computers.
Customers don't know a thing about computer if they decided to buy a prebuilt.
>>
>>35632494
>ram speed
>>
>>35632494
>APU
>>
>>35632494
The more the better.
Appreciate this a lot.
I'm actually taking notes on this shit.
My only problem is that its a lot of shit to just learn at once.
This is something that you learn overtime.
Kind of like taking a placement test.
>>
>>35631434 (OP)
Just lurk rate my build threads. Those contain a wealth of information.
>>
>>35632451
They aren't teaching me shit on computers.
Only thing I'm learning is how to up sell people.
And the most important thing sell insurance on anything and everything
We have insurance for plastic screen protectors.
They're only showing me how to rip customers off.
>>
You're on par with the average computer user with your lack of knowledge. The only thing you should focus on is selling the most expensive computer you can. The idiots that go to Best Buy deserve it.

Also, you're a faggot for working at Best Buy.
>>
cpu = thing that loads shit
hard drive = thing that saved shit is loaded from
ram = memorizes what programs you have open right now and keeps them up and running. forgets everything once you close it (yes i know this is the only required detailed explanation)
gpu = GRAFIX
motherboard = thing that everything plugs into and makes it all work together
psu = motherfucking power
case = holds your shit
>>
>I just got hired at best buy
>don't know shit

Sounds about right.
>>
OP, I'm sorry but you dun goofed.
>knows programming
>works sales at BB.

Enjoy your $8.50/hr.

Sauce:
> I don't know languages.
> Got hired as a dev.
>Making ~$60k/yr.
>>
Just look at the specs on the Best Buy website. More RAM is better. The higher the frequency and the more cores of the processor the better. Intel crap usually trumps AMD crap. i3<i5<i7. Wireless networking a<b<g<n, but everything you sell shoul have n. Memorize how much laptops weigh, how many usb ports they have, what other connections they have.. But really none of that fucking matters. What your real job will be is to convince customers that they need add ons, peripherals, extended warranties, onsite services, anything with a higher margin than computers, which they usually sell at a loss.
>>
A lot of Best Buys suddenly closed where I live (Western Canada). I hope this doesn't happen to you, OP. I was working security at one of them the morning after it happened. None of the employees had been given any warning. It was really sad.
>>
You need to be a salesman, first and foremost. I had a friend, who I shall say was the "technically-challenged" kind of person. They had him selling TVs at best buy, even though he's not a guru when it comes to the products/systems he's selling.

Honestly, there are training handbooks and stuff that you can pick-up from co-workers, so I don't see the need to beg for help on /g/
>>
>>35632846
Pretty much what I'm being trained as
Not being trained as a computer consultant
being trained as a salesman
>>
>>35632686
i'm >>35632494 but i have to constantly tell my wife to stop pushing me at BB customer's cause it's not my goddam job.

>please don't sell 'gaming' laptops just whisper pcpartpicker to anyone remotely interested in computers
>mid-range laptops are more than enough to run the vast majority of what people are interested in, and willing to tolorate
>never sell a 'high-end laptop' to someone who looks poor, you are just ripping them off. feel free to upsell the most expensive shit you can to the rich-looking assholes with money to burn.
>hp laptops traditionally have backlight problems, but otherwise make decent hardware
>acer laptops are traditionally hit-or-miss, PLEASE don't upsell them
>asus, samsung, apple laptops are god-tier with a BB insurance plan, make sure customers know that the BB insurance will REPLACE the machine with the same or one of equal price, even 6years later (source: my mom's 3 laptops for 500$ a decade ago).
>BB's touchscreen monitors are a ripoff
>BB doesn't sell HDCP-enabled DVI monitors, so if someone asks, say no the HDMI cable will not drive the monitor
>if someone wants a desktop, tell them to get a small hdd for the base os and purchase a 1 or 2 TB hdd to add.
>all printers are the same: shit

want any more?
>>
>>35632966
You're like a fucking best buy genie
If I believed in god I would pray for you
>taking notes as I type this
>>
>>35633063

if you see a computer at <800$ with a >1366x768 display, SELL THE FUCK OUT OF IT.

that way oem's will get a clue that customers don't want that shit-tier display that hurts their eyes and you can help the rest of us.

you'll have to ask someone else about router quality, i just buy the 150$ one once every 6 years or so.

>chromebooks are amazing for the general public or someone that already has a desktop.
>if you see someone looking at the accessories or games display, tell them to look at steam or amazon.
>keep at least one cheap hdmi cable around and be a friend to a customer every once in a while.
>don't gouge folks who don't know what they need, just sell 'em a 400-600$ machine and the insurance. people looking at that price range are probably upgrading anyway and their new machines will run SO MUCH FASTER than anything they've ever experienced that they'll love you more for it.
>the more tech literate customers WILL see this and appreciate your efforts and sometimes make an effort to help you fill your upsell quotas (i know i do).
>make sure you know the booksack laptop sizes for college season, this will likely get you a little bit more sales, and people won't have to look as hard. corporate office likes more sales and people like convenience, after all that's why they went to BB in the first place.
>don't upsell the useless buzzwordy bullshit on the front of the laptop. ignore the wifi video beaming shit, and similar. nobody has accompanying hardware to support it so the feature is LITERALLY useless. the people that do actually want it already have a machine that works so you won't even be talking to them.

i'm kinda running out here... it's mostly just "don't be a dick to people that don't know what they need"

just remember the insurance plan. it is absolutely worth it. but when a customer says 'no thanks', leave it at that. repeat customers know your helpful face and will come to you more often.

Thanks for all of your help.
I'm just not trying to be like my dick co-workers and sell pcs by the price tag I want to sell the customers what they need
>>
>>35631434 (OP)
you don't you just need to sell them.

MOAR CORES = MOAR POWAH i7 > all

MOAR RAMMMM

RETINA

etc, just spout bs
>>
>>35631756

Radioshack website, yes. The store...no, not by a long shot. Fucking Staples is more computer part centric than RadioShack has been recently (going back at least four years).
>>
>>35633573
it's a fucking phone store with overpriced breadboard parts and a REALLY shit selection of shitty tv's. fuck 'the shack'
