Microsoft's Surface sales figures are in, and they're ABSOLUTELY HIDEOUS
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2013/07/30/microsoft_surface_sales_disaster/

>According to the report, Microsoft's total Surface revenue for all of fiscal 2013 amounted to just $853m. That's nearly $50m less than the $900m charge Redmond took when it discounted its remaining Surface RT inventory by $150 per box.

>And that's not all. That $900m writedown was related to Surface RT only, but the $853m revenue figure includes sales of Surface RT and Surface Pro combined.
>>
>tfw we all knew it was shilling on /g/ to try and push the sale of a god-awfully overpriced piece of shit
>>
any chance of a firesale?
>>
It's a shame, because the Surface Pro is actually pretty nice, but the battery life kills it. What they need to do is:
- Haswell Surface Pro with a high PPI display at $999 or lower with one of the tablet oriented i5/i7 CPUs and an IGZO display, 20 hours of battery life would be actually pretty realistic if they did that
- Bay Trail Surface Mini that's 7.5" 4:3 at $299 or lower
>>
>Surface RT died alone and miserable like we all knew it would
>WP will do the same and it's going to take Nokia with it
Fuck you, Microsoft.
>>
>>35657869
>tfw got two Touchpads (gave one to my dad) and never use it
>>
>>35657869
They supposedly sell the RT for $110 with the keyboard and the Pro for $399 at Microsoft conferences.
>>
>>35657869
Be realistic, they have two options
>sale the product at far below retail expectation to make at least some of the money back and make a large market coverage
or
>recycle them for <1/20th they wanted to get

Which do you think they'll do?

There was a study done on those netbooks a year or so after they became popular that showed that 65% of the people who used them never took them outside their house.

I'm sure the same applies to tablets. When is it necessary to have a mobile computing device with you? Almost never, considering that smartphones now work just as well and are more portable.

Even in the latest Ghost in the shell series.

Totally ruined the immersion, seeing a surface ad 20 seconds in. /g/ was right, the show was shit compared to the first season. I should have listened. Won't be watching the second episode.

Wait, what? I watched it, knowing full well about the Surface being in it, and I didn't notice it as much as I thought I would. I even watched that minute long Surface commercial before hand so I knew what I was looking for.

When you're showing 2 screenshots of a 50 minute anime you're not exactly showing people what it's really like to watch.
>>
>>35659939
At least Microsoft has godly taste in its anime choice. Will still watch/10
>>
I'd buy a Surface RT if I could install Linux on it. The hardware looks nice.
>>
>>35660015
I almost couldn't believe it when I saw it less than 20 seconds in. I was so hyped to have a new season that focused on the origins of the main character, only to be ruined less than 30 seconds in by advertising that was out of place and distracting.

I'll admit that the second screenshot was more well done form of product placement and if it were the only instance of it in the show I wouldn't have made screenshots or complained about it.

>>35660042
Get ready to be disappointed. It's nothing like the first season of SAC. Instead it's a pretty average anime that even /a/ admits is lackluster. When the show came out almost all the threads on /a/ were negative about it, now they're non existent.

>>
msft made a bunch of retarded choices in the RT. locking down the bootloader, making it $500 without a keyboard (THE ONE THING THEY ADVERTISE, THEY DONT INCLUDE), making it more expensive than an ipad, and the stupidest marketing excuses ("well you get office, so that's like $120 cheaper than an ipad, and it's 32GB which is another $100 cheaper!").

Should have priced it $380 with keyboard.
>>
FIRE SALE WHEN

I'd buy a Pro for maybe $300-$400. I could finally watch my 10bit animu on a tablet. Shame about the battery life, though.
>>
>>35660099
What would be the point? There's no driver support and never will be either.

The hardware is fine, even good. The issue is the company that makes it and the terrible software they include with it.

>only to be ruined less than 30 seconds in by advertising that was out of place and distracting.

Did you not know about it going in? Like I said, there was a fucking minute long commercial for the Surface from the studio and everything.

Personally I'm not so petty as to let something like that ruin a show for me.

Anyways, overall the episode was alright. They didn't really touch on anything philosophical but I guess if this is an origin story I shouldn't expect too much of that. We'll see how it goes.

>>35660190
I had no idea that anything surface related was going to be in the show watching it, I purposefully avoided any news of the show that might ruin any of it. Imagine seeing an ad for a real product you can buy today being shown in it 20 seconds in, in what is supposed to be Tokyo in the year 2027 or such. As I said it ruined the immersion for me, as much as I tried to ignore it.

OSX isn't a touchscreen OS though... so why would you want it?
>>
The Pro was a pretty quality device. The Biggest complaints were battery life and using it on your lap. Both of which can be fixed with Haswell and the battery accessories the engineers talked about in the interview they gave. I'm eagerly awaiting to see what they do because i need a new laptop and digitizer for my drawing would be great.
>>
>>35660381
I'll take that as a compliment, considering that I'm complaining about product placement ruining the fictional setting of Tokyo in the year 2027.

To those that consider this a tiny almost inconsequential detail that only autists would fret over, I pity them. Maybe they should go back to watching the big bang theory.

The setting is just as important moron. It's the main reason why GITS is so popular, to see what they imagine the future to look like. The sociological, political, geopolitical and human aspects of life being changed by technology is the whole point of the series.
>>
Morals of the story and thread summation:

1. There should never have been another ghost in the shell series made after solid state society came out and capped the story.

2. The surface is a fucking piece of shit and always will be.

3. The windows phone is a fucking piece of shit and always will be

4. Microsoft cannot modernize, something we knew since 7 came out at which point it was obvious that was the last even halfway decent thing (technically the last decent thing being windows xp).

5. Steve ballmer is an enormous cokehead. But anyone who works around him know he does coke in his office as well as basically, well everywhere. He likes cocaine. I guess.

Point being fuck that fat piece of shit I prefer stallman everyday if I have to choose. At least one doesn't do cocaine.

6. Microjew is dying and hopefully windows "9" which is supposedly based on the xbox OS will kill it for good. Since sadly windows 8 failed in this task.

7. Proprietary linux based distros made by google and amazon will shortly become the new normal.

8. Everyone who is not fucking stupid will use actual linux and FOSS, the community of which is rapidly modernizing and vastly improving with each release. Case and point ubuntu 13.04 is actually not shit (for the layman user anyway).

9. Microsoft is standing in the way of innovation at this point

10. Historically speaking those who stand in the way are run down and destroyed.

Its a matter of time.

Its just always nice to smell the end coming.
>>
>>35660599
No shit. And now Surface is smeared all over a perfectly good show when it's obvious that in 25 years or so it's going to be an ancient, dead brand.

Microsoft isn't dying until a satisfying replacement to MS Office is on Linux.
>>
>>35660631

>>
>>35660685
Chrome OS is linux based. No not just unix, literally linux based.

Amazon OS is as well, but most people have not gotten lucky like me and had a chance to see it. Yes such a thing does exist, no I don't fucking know when they plan on mass producing it. Amazon is running alot of experiments in house right now trying to determine the best way to modernize and move their business to the next level. Ask any recent software engineering graduate if this is true or not most will confirm they had some offer or interaction with amazon scouters because they are trying to snip up all the good engineers and programmers/designers they can find for their various plans.

No its not optimistic its the sad truth because anyone who thinks that this will LESSEN botnet information gathering tendency rather than grow them exponentially is sadly mistaken. Microjew is bad but this will be an entirely new level of bad.

Nonethless I have Microsoft because of how idiotic they became. So they get what they deserve.

1. Zorin
2. Office suites besides fucking libre exist
3. Mint
4. Others. There are quite a few very simple mods or versions of mainstream distros like redhat, debian, ect that look and run nearly exactly like windows, except without all the bullshit and without the overhead costs.
>>
>>35660725
PROTIP: The Haswell Surface Pro could get a better battery life than the MBA since it has a smaller display and the battery has almost the same capacity. Not to mention they could put a tablet oriented CPU in there. Atom CPUs have a low power consumption.
>>
So you anons are telling me that buying a Surface RT at the new low price would be a bad idea?
>>
>>35660741
Considering how popular online services are how long do you think that's going to take, once the average user realizes that his work will be saved in "the cloud" and he'll never lose a single document ever again and can share it as easily as giving out a link for a website?

The only thing microsoft has going for it is that its .doc formats are still considered mandatory at many levels of governments worldwide and in multinational companies. Switching to a new format still isn't worth the hassle to them due to all the paperwork it would cause. Eventually that won't be the case and then they'll be shit out of luck. They have less than 10 years at best when it comes to office productivity software.
