4chan now supports de-pagination/infinite scroll. Just click "All Pages" in the page navigation (to the right of Catalog), or select "Always use infinite scroll" in the [Settings] menu (note, you must have the inline extension enabled to use this feature).

The inline extension also now supports enabling the thread auto-updater by default. Just select "Auto-update by default" in [Settings], and threads will always auto-update when you load them.

Just got my first email today from cox about notice of copyright infringement (Downloaded the new Game of Thrones episode). I'm not really a /g/ type of guy... what do I do now? How do I continue to download without threat? How long could I do it now before shit gets serious?
>>
>>34399140 (OP)
Ignore it
>>
How do they even get your personal email? you use an email issued by your ISP?
>>
>>34399170

And how long can I continue to download before I get my internet cut off?
>>
>>34399182

They got my email for online bill pay.
>>
Honestly, I wouldn't worry about it. If they threaten to cut off your internet just tell them you didn't download it and if they did cut you off, you'd take your money someplace else. That usually does it.
>>
>>34399190
>implying they want you to stop giving them money
>>
>>34399221

Unfortunately my apartment complex only allows Cox for tv/internet/phone.

Is this really not that big a deal? This is the first time I've ever been warned, and even though I'm not super big into torrenting, I do it on a pretty regular basis. Should I start using a proxy?
>>
>>34399297
Don't use proxies to torrent, use VPNs. I personally do, but that's only because I don't want my university to see what I'm doing on the internet (I live on campus). When I was still living at home, I forgot how many letters we received, and apparently we continued to receive them from my brother-in-law's torrenting. Not once was the internet ever shut down. If you have access to it, you uld just start torrenting on public or cracked wifi.
>>
>>34399375
>If you have access to it, you *could just start torrenting on public or cracked wifi.
>>
>>34399375

>VPNs

Okay, I'm really gonna show my noob status here.... Is there a guide to using VPNs? Or a website that explains it well?
>>
Cox has some policy where they will not release the name of a customer (associated w IP address) so you're good. That is unless you really do something to piss them off, which I never have. I've gotten letters from time to time.. "warning of copyright infringement" over the years. You really need to purchase a VPN service. They only cost about $8 a month for a really good one, and you don't have to put up with all of that bullshit. Also, the laws have changed and who knows what could happen to you nowadays.

Don't download anything sketchy or questionable without a VPN from now on.
>>
So how do I bittorrent without having to upload the file while I'm downloading it?
>>
>>34399687
You'll have to purchase and then learn though trial and error how to use the VPN service.
>>
>>34399392

my local Starbucks has 50mb/s speeds, so torrenting unprotected there is a good idea?
>>
I don't have a VPN service at the moment. But Im sure someone here can recommend a worthwhile VPN, like maybe BTguard or something.
>>
>>34399745

What about just using a bittorrent client that downloads only and doesn't upload?

When you cut a file from say a hard drive and copy it to an external hard drive, will there still be data about that file left on the hard drive?
>>
My partitioning looks like: [ 130GiB NTFS ][ 150 GiB ext4 ] [ 4Gib Swap ]
I'd like to get rid of windows and am wondering if deleting that partition and extending the ext partition would require files to be physically moved. Anyone with experience with this know whether this would be problematic?
>>
>>34399749
good question. Do you have to log on to their WiFi?
>>
>>34399778
Get a seedbox from feralhosting, it's a lot safer since there is possibility that VPN's can disconnect.
>>
use mega
>>
>>34399813
It's not General Question Thread. I would reinstall your system using GPT.
>>
>>34399826

no it is unlocked

http://www.dban.org/

http://partedmagic.com/doku.php?id=downloads#.UbJw3T6C1ok

download the iso from one of the above - learn how to boot from it and use it.
>>
>>34399870
Oh dear my fault. It's that image
>>
>>34399832
Oh, yeah what happens if ferelhosting has a bunch of your data and, worse case, its from some honeypot or whatever. Am i good there with their service??
>>
>>34399870
>It's not General Question Thread
eat a dick. this thread is whatever anyone decides that it is.
>>
>>34399935
They don't keep logs, they use shared IP's and also the owner of Feral is a pirate himself.
>>
>>34399887
Then what the hell are you doing torrenting at home? Unless they bust out a full investigation (check video footage, MAC addresses in routers etc.) they'll never find you, and they won't investigate unless you're downloading cp or something like that.

People post bomb threats from public wifi without getting caught, torrenting from them is a no-brainer.
>>
>>34399813
I don't think it moves them if it doesn't need to.

You could also just create a new partition instead of enlarging the current ones.
>>
>>34399967
Cool. so it stays there, like a VPS service, i guess? and then i can pull whatever i want off of it huh?
>>
Don't VPN sites get those letters too? what do they do about them?

Or do they host their VPNs offshore?
>>
>>34399887
Just make sure you change your mac
>>
>>34399984
That may work. I could use it to store the media that is taking up space. Would it appear as just an empty mounted drive?
>>
>>34400012
Yep, or you could add it to fstab and it would simply be a folder wherever you want it to be
>>
>>34399996
Yep
>>
>>34399972

good to know, in the event that I acquire a laptop I will do that
>>
>>34399999 →
Install gentoo
>>
>>34400000 →

What could so right who after give damn nsa even?
>>
>>34399910

It was a general question, I know about DBAN and such.
>>
OP, were you even using a private tracker?
>>
>>34400043
Hey bud, i went to ferelhosting site. His features include storage and a VPN service. So, is that all that I will need? Just his service and use his VPN?

I'm not downloading a gianormous shitload of stuff, just steady stuff for personal use.
>>
Someone spilt a warm latte on my thinkpad [x200] keyboard

What should I do to clean it?
>>
>>34400168
No, You use a Bittorrent Web UI that downloads the stuff to the seedbox, then you use SFTP to download it to your computer.
>>
>>34400065
I have read a pretty good story about HD and solid state forensics recently. It's some kind of paid content, a monthly newsletter that i get. I'll look for it and maybe there's some links and references i can post.
>>
>>34400203
Ok, so that guy at ferel has all of this info on his site and stuff then..
>>
>>34400195

Try to let it dry out, possibly in a bag of rice to help absorb the moisture.

If it hit any of the circuits and caused a short you're probably fucked.
>>
I'm considering trying linux. I'm going to try ubuntu first because I know nothing about linux. What are some things I should know?
>>
>>34400316

Don't go for ubuntu, use fedora, mint, or crunchbang.

Just make sure you read the documentation and google any issues.

Drivers, and wifi usually are the most common things to have issues with.

Don't be afraid of the terminal, once you're comfortable switch over to a more customizable distro or install from minimal disks.

Oh almost forgot.

Install gentoo
>>
>>34400033
>fstab
Thanks for the wonderful solution. Also realided I can reinstall on the first partition, move my files over and then extend the parition to the right which should be safe.
Now I somewhat see why people usually do their install with separate /home paritions
>>
>>34400417
Out of those distros you listed which one is the most user-friendly? Like I said I'm brand new to linux so I'm looking for something without too steep of a learning curve.
>>
>>34400464
I'm not him, but Mint is the most user friendly, since it's practically a green ubuntu.
>>
>>34399800
".. There’s no guarantee that usable data will be recovered. If a drive is too damaged, the data is effectively gone. Also, if a drive was encrypted and the customer doesn’t have the encryption key, recovery becomes extremely unlikely. Many hard-drive manufacturers sell self-encrypting drives, with the decryption key on the drive’s circuit board. In those cases, data-recovery requires the original, working circuit board.

Overwriting files — intentionally or otherwise — renders the erased bits unreadable. Chozick (who, you’ll recall, does data forensics for law-enforcement agencies) claims that overwriting a sector once is just as secure as the fabled Gutmann method, which rewrites sectors 35 times. That wasn’t always the case; however, today’s drives pack data so tightly there’s no room for ghosts of previous bits. (That was the biggest surprise of the interview.) .. "
>>
>>34400464
Just use ubuntu. It's amazing, and if you ever want to get minimalistic you can easily install another deksop enviroment in ubuntu.

install ubuntu should be the new install gentoo
>>
>>34400464

Easy to use would probably be mint, followed by crucnbang Imo

Either way Ubuntu, Mint, Crunchbang are all debian based.

While fedora is red hat based. (Rpm packages)

As for gentoo don't attempt it, you're used to linux, and want to get a fully customized installation or learn a bit more about what goes on under the hood.

The next step after gentoo would be saying fuck it and building a linux from scratch system. (Not too bad, just a royal pain in the ass and can take forever)
>>
>>34400641

* until you're used to linux*

I apparently can't formulate sentences tonight.. Time to grab a shot glass
>>
>>34399375

>pay to pirate

lol
>>
>>34399780
I'm not sure you understand what bittorrent is and how it works.
