How is it fake? It's already been discussed how the notification panel is now going to be modular like the keyboard, and Google has already published their Google Keyboard that brings AOSP-style input to all OEM-modified systems, so what's stopping them?

I didn't think it'd be this sudden, but I knew it was happening, especially with the success of Google Edition devices.
>>
this would be amazing, but I'm not sure how will this work

I mean having the AOSP android on my One while I can keep the Sense camera app is something I'd love to experience

applefag here

why should i care about this update to your inferior OS
>>
>>35404780
I have trouble believing Google added "improved Bluetooth protocol, economical WiFi connection" to the 4.2 page and then put "Choose your interface" below it without changing ANYTHING.

This is true, but I'm just saying that even though it's a shop, this kind of thing is to be expected.
>>
>>35404780

It's, at best, going to be a "stock launcher" aka Nova/Apex like. TouchWiz and Sense aren't just launchers you can turn on and off. They are embedded deep in the system with their own hooks and drivers. Why do you think people can't simply just install the HTC Camera on a Nexus or Galaxy device? Because you can't just flip shit on and off.

Unless they plan on install what amounts to two OSes, taking up even more space on their internal memory.

Yeah but only if OEMs chose not to remove that option...
>>
>source

>>
>>35404824
You do know that underneath the UI, all of Google's interface still exists... right?

You wouldn't be able to apply an OEM skin that didn't exist in the first place, but as a requirement of 4.0, all OEMs are forced to have the stock Android UI underneath their own. It's part of a theme compatibility thing, so it already exists even though you don't see it.
>>
>>35404824
Well TouchWiz roms on my S3 are something between 1 GB nd 1.5 GB
AOSP roms on the other hand are like 100-150 MB

I could live with that
>>
>>35404846
That isn't an option for OEMs - if they do that, they will no longer be permitted to flash gapps, and include the Google Play store or any apps like it. See >>35404849, this restriction applies to the theme requirement, and all major OEMs abide by it.

It's probably a good idea to actually _listen_ to an Android developer on this one, anon.
>>
>>35404868
It might still have the OEM look underneath somewhere, but what if OEMs chose to just remove the "OEM look" switch?
>>

>>
>>35404893

>>35404915
I know. All of the 4.x devices have the holo theme. OP's pic reads "OEM adjusted interface", that doesn't remove HOLO as we all know, since HTC and Samsung keep selling their phones with touchwiz and whatever.

But if OEMs have the freedom to modify Android, they might just remove the "make it look like AOSP"/"disable touchwiz" button.
>>
>>35404887

Yea, I read all about that but apparently you didn't read anything.

>It would be nice if Google also required the stock homescreen and launcher found in Android 4.0, but today’s news just covers the theme families.

All you get are fonts and colors. It says nothing about AOSP underneath TouchWiz or Sense.

Just get out.
>>
>>35404704 (OP)
so I only have to buy a new device to enjoy the openness of lagdroid?
gee, that's great customer service.
>>
>>35404949
...How many times do I have to say it?

They can do that. There is no restriction saying they can't. The restriction is that once they DO, they are no longer permitted to install the Google Apps.
>>
>>35404960
What?
>>
>>35404960
Enjoying iOS 7 on your iPhone 4S?

Oh wait, it barely works on anything else than the iPhone 5 and the new iPad
>>
>>35404963
But on 4.2 right now, if it ships with Touchwiz/whatever interface, there's no way to disable it. Until you root/flash it and void your warrantee.

Do you even understand what I'm trying to say?
>>
>>35404958
Do you know what the homescreen and launcher are?

They're apps, like Nova and Apex. That's literally it.

The entire systemui and framework APKs are still there. I know because I play with them when developing.

My point also isn't that you can currently switch between them system-wide, but that it would be incredibly easy for Google to make this a requirement, considering they've already put the foundation in place awhile ago.
>>
>>35404985
Oh, there's just a disconnect between us. Yes, this is completely true, but that's because it wasn't made a requirement.

Yet.

That's my point. It's very easy for them to make it a requirement and OEMs would have to comply.
>>
>>35404983
no, enjoying the outdated 4.1.2 on my sgs3.
thanks google, for being so open and allowing the OEMs to fuck people over.

I think we can all agree that the AOSP camera app is one of the weak points of stock android
>>
>>35405083
Agreed
>>
What can I do with asop that I can't do on touchwiz/sense?

The answer is absolutely nothing. I can use the exact same apps that I'm using now.

You people get excited over nothing. I suspect in the coming weeks many will wipe their phone for nothing and install unstable builds constructed by the 12 year old Indians on xda.
>>
>>35405083
Sure. I don't use the camera though; I have my DSLR and prefer all the options and focal lengths on that.

For a regular Joe, I can see your point. Who's to say you can't just install a better camera app?
>>
So are Nexus devices obsolete now?

>Implying updates even matter past a certain point

My Nexus S doesn't have the latest update (''stuck'' on based 4.1), and it's going STRONK
>>
>>35405151
the Nexus S is REALLY old
I mean you can't expect Google to update an ancient device

It's like asking the Crysis devs to make the game run on a Pentium 2, just because it had a "NEVER OBSOLETE" sticker on it.
>>
>>35405143
sadly, there aren't really any good camera apps on the play store
>>
>>35405184
>the Nexus S is REALLY old
I know, and as I said - it's still running amazingly on ''ancient'' (fucking lol) 4.1

The whole ''no updates on non-nexus phones :('' thing shouldn't even matter now. Android is less fragmented than it used to be.
