Is it even possible to land a half-decent job as a fresh CS grad without being someone's son-in-law?

Starting to lose hope.
>>
>>35477946 (OP)
>CS Grad

Ya blew it
>>
>>35477946 (OP)
it is, but you have to be able to prove your skills.

Write a few demo programs or a website that does stuff.
>>
>>35477946 (OP)
by the way, that job looks utter shit.
they want you to work on backend and frontend systems that run on a mish mash of languages.

for that job you would have to pay me 200k minimum
>>
>>35477997
At least it isn't a job involving MUMPS
>>
>>35477946 (OP)
It's called internships. How the fuck do people not realize this. Also
>Spring Spring, MD
You don't go to UMDCP do you? Because that's where I go...
>>
>>35477946 (OP)
>1-3 years of experience
How in the fuck did you not get this during internships/fellowships during your undergrad studies? I'm a fucking sophomore at UMD and I would be able to land that job.
>>
>>35477957
And what would you suggest as a major?
>>
>>35478118
CP or BC bro?
>>
>>35478159
BC
>>
Why would you want to go work for a company at the IT Software development if you don't even have 1 year experience in scripting?
>>
>>35478168
Pff faggot
>>
>entry level
they mean the pay, not the job itself is entry level.
>>
>>35477946 (OP)
I'm a CS student. I haven't even graduated and this company wants me to work for them because of my performance on internship as a C++ and Java programmer.

>inb4 java is shit
>>
>>35478251
java is shit
>>
>>35477946 (OP)

Forget CS, ANYTHING in computing and IT is going to shit right now.

I got "let go" about 6 months ago from the city hall IT dept. where I've been working for 3 years due to downsizing. THERE WAS ONLY 2 FUCKING PEOPLE LEFT DOWN THERE.

I decided to apply again just for kicks, then I saw something very weird. There was a LOT more "kids" (18~23?) working at city hall. The secretary girl who attended me must have only been 19. I get in touch with my buddy still working in the IT dept and we have lunch.

Long story short, he tells me that all the kids working there are "temporary paid interns" that are basically being hired for a couple months, then let go, then a whole new crop of kids are brought in for another couple months to work for minimum wage.

So my city found out that slave labor is practically the best way to run a city.

Oh, and the IT dept was outsourced. Everything was run virtually and remotely.
Only 2 guys left down there just to keep the shit running.

Fucking Bullshit.
>>
>>35478183
Clearly mirin our chess team.
>>
>>35477946 (OP)
>Is it even possible to land a half-decent job as a fresh CS grad without being someone's son-in-law?

CS grads who did a year long Co-op (in general) have few problems getting jobs when they graduate.

CS grads who graduate top of their class have few problems getting jobs when they graduate.

If you are average and you don't have real world experience then you will have a difficult time getting employed.
>>
>>35478129
anything medical, pharmacy. CS will get outsourced to india. It's okay I think walmart is hiring
>>
>>35478308
I ain't mirin shit. CP has a top tier CS program
>>
>>35478359
>CS will get outsourced to india
This gets thrown around a lot but good CS majors will always have jobs because it's so dependent on good communication.
>>
>>35478280
>Has a pleb tier job
>wonders why "kids" are replacing him
>>
>>35478251
Did you receive a formal job offer?

It helps to live in a place where the industry is actually active I guess. Here in the Midwest there's fucking nothing.
>>
>>35477976
I have a pretty extensive open-source portfolio on Github along with a military-funded assistantship and a few good-tier conference publications.

What matters to employers is years of experience, it seems.
>>
>>35478280
Makes perfect sense. This allows the "kids" to get some work experience and say that they've worked for a couple of months to their next employer.

>good communication
God damn, I'm decent at programming but spend at most 2 minutes a day talking.
Whenever I try to explain a programming concept, I can only show them the code/explain the algorithm, but still I fuck up a lot when explaining things.
>>
>>35478456
What do you mean by "formal job offer"? If you mean talking with my boss about that then yes.
>>
>>35478574
If you want to move up to senior level/managment position this is an essential skill. Better brush up on it.
If you can't communicate well you're pretty much expendable.

I've been getting a lot of recruiter emails that look like this, so at least my resume is raising the right flags.
>>
>>35478574
If you can't explain how your code works then you're not a good programmer.
>>
>>35478657
Mind giving an overview of what flags recruiters are looking for?
>>
>>35478657
>Ahmed

nope.
>>
>>35478596
I mean 'your potential boss has written up a contract which awaits your signature'. If he's saying things like 'I can find you a job' that doesn't really count in my experience, but having direct contact with employers is always a big plus (required?).
>>
>>35478658
Not necessarily, maybe he's just not good with finding the words during social settings.
In other words, socially retarded.
>>
>>35478657
>tfw i have no experience with qt's
why must everyone remind me?
>>
>>35478687
I had a 45-minute phone call where a recruiter advised putting 'C++' in my resume next to my assistantship experience in a project which involved Qt and C++. I figured it was self-explanatory, but I didn't realize that 90% of these resumes don't even really get read, and that most of the people reading them are entirely nontechnical.

What their systems are looking for is demonstrated experience with a certain skill, meaning you're rated by how many skills you can stuff into your job experience listings and how many years you worked at that job, meaning new college grads are especially SOL without internships (and usually even with internships).
>>
>>35478739
>meaning new college grads are especially SOL without internships (and usually even with internships).

This can only end well.
>>
>>35478700
No, I didn't get a contract yet. I was recommended by my project supervisor and invited to talk with the boss. It's not a big company, btw.
>>
>>35478574
Software engineering is about 80% writing or revising specifications, use-cases and test plans. If you can't effectively communicate you're dead in the water.

One good way to demonstrate good communication is to write up your various projects and submit papers to local conferences. Your professors can help with this as their careers tend to rise and fall based on how many publications they have to their name.

Is the number of "interesting" programming jobs like embedded systems waning in comparison to webdev? I know webdev, but I don't think it interests me enough compared to working in C/C++ and stuff like that. StackOverflow is less "hipster" than GitHub's Jobs page, but still all you see is rails work.

You're telling me you didn't either get a job in the field over the summer or take a year out to get some experience?

I have a summer job at a software firm. Gets me decent moneys, good experience, and an excellent thing to put on my resume.

For once, things are going pretty well.
