Hey /g/entlemen,

Look what I brought from the basement. I'm going to install Mint on it.
Picture of the back panel coming up and also 2 keyboards and mice. I want to know if they're any good, in case any of you had experience with them.
The mice are most likely shit since they're the old ball mice.

What's that rectangular white drive half way down? Credit cards?

ports not color coded, that pegs it as very early ATX era, I'd say Pentium 1. I'd want a bare WM on that thing at most. Course if you're happy to have a command-line only system you can run on anything

Here are the keyboards and the mice.

Currently has Win 98 and seems to run alright. Any distro you'd recommend? I was thinking mint, as I mentioned in the OP, but #! might be more suitable.
>>
I don't think you're going to get Mint to run on this.
I'd try something more lightweight.
>>
>>35121603
Not OP, but what about Lubuntu?
It should be light enough(?).
>>
>>35121558
but it has USB, so even if it's 1.0 that can't be very old
>>
>>35121537

Almost rustled... 7.5/10

its for micro VHS tapes, they were popular in the 90s
fucking 13 year old

If I'm not mistaken it's from around 98.

Here are system specs for Mint, so take it as you will.
System requirements:

>x86 processor (Linux Mint 64-bit requires a 64-bit processor. Linux Mint 32-bit works on both 32-bit and 64-bit processors).
>512 MB RAM (1GB recommended for a comfortable usage).
>5 GB of disk space
>Graphics card capable of 800×600 resolution
CD/DVD drive or USB port

You might be able to run it, but I don't think it will be comfortable.
I reckon chose a more lightweight distro. Lubuntu doesn't sound to bad.
Or if your going really lightweight you could go for Puppy Linux or Damn Small Linux.
>>
>>35121681
I guess I'll go with lubuntu then.
>>
>>35121726
Just remember you can make a live boot disk on a usb or cd and test distros.
Before you make a final decision, try a few distros and see what works best.
>>
>>35121580
If anyone is interested in the keyboards an the mice I can take another picture since this one is kind of shaky.

Europoor detected.
install crunchbang.
>>
I'm being retarded, but I can't seem to find the key to select the boot device.
>>
>>35121840
Older machines don't have the option.

You'll have to set the boot priority manually in the BIOS
>>
>>35121580
Ehh, those blurry prints aren't really a problem themselves, but they represent a lack of quality control. I would be wary using them in the future.

Tiny Core Linux or Damn Small Linux
>>
>>35121498 (OP)
oh holy crap!

i just spent yesterday setting up an only desktop like this for a friends kid as a XBMC media centre

but damn that one looks old as shit
>>
>>35121986
oh on that note avoid mint for such an old system it really does need that 1gb of RAM to run properly, i used puppy linux and it ran like a dream
>>
>>35121986
I had two in the basement and this was the more recent one. The other one didn't even have USB ports.
>>
>>35122012
Will avoid it, but I was thinking of installing crunchbang like >>35121833 suggested and I already have it downloaded.
>>
>>35121986
I have an XBMC media centre.
XBMC lags like all shit.....the desktop doesn't even have bad specs,
FirePro 1GB AMD GPU
Core 2 Duo
3gb ram

How do I stop the lag and make it useable.
>>
>>35122036
adjust the setting's initially XBMC wont take advantage of a multicore system, it seems set up "out of the box" to run on a single core using no more that 512gb of RAM, this can easily be tweaked.

But remember that XBMC can run at a pretty decent level on something as limited as a Raspberry Pi with no lag and handle 1080p fairly easily (that said try to keep to 720p for smooth service on the Pi and low end PC's)

The hub beta wizard is a pretty decent tweaker and makes it very easy to play with the settings.

>>
>>35122119
>512MB of ram
That explains it. I'll check settings and googel some shit.
>>
>>35122163
people always forget that XBMC was designed to be a background based media solution unlike for example WMC that is a bit of a resource hog and tends to "fuck you ima full screen".

really a few (very few really) tweaks and it should run work enough especially on a multi core system.

simply up your potential ram and processing power usage (you will need admin for this) and thats pretty much it. if you still struggle then turn off the visualizations but really there should be any issues with even a low range modern system.
>>
OP here. So I configured the boot options in BIOS, but loading from USB wasn't an option, so I selected CD as the primary boot device.
After saving and exiting that didn't work as next time I booted the machine it still read from the HDD. I'm currently in windows and it doesn't want to read CD's and when I insert a USB it wants drivers all though they should be plug and play.
Wat do?
>>
>>35122241
im presuming from the age were talking win 95-98?
>>
>>35121498 (OP)
mint would be WAY too bloated
you want something like tinycore for that bitch with like.. dillo for a browser.
>>
>>35122231
Yeah I guess I forgot as well.
Oh well, I've got a dual core media centre.
Might as well put it to use.

Trying this now. Hope it works.
>>
>>35122311

now you have that its a simple case of installing to the HD, rebooting and Bob is your mothers brother.
>>
>>35121744
>implying machines this old could boot from USB
some P1 systems couldn't even boot from CD, you could use a floppy of the HDD, that's it
>>
Got the CD drive working.
Would do >>35122300, but I can't seem to connect to the internet.

Will be installing Core Plus since crunchbang is 71 MB too big to fit on a CD.
>>
