For the first time in over 5 years, we're running two Contests—one for new Rotating Banners, and the other for our House Ads.

Thanks in advance to everyone who submits banners!

EDIT: The Rotating Banners contest is now over, but we still need more House Ads!

Hey /g/.

I start an apprenticeship tomorrow at a company in Reading. The role states I will be entering as a 'Systems Administrator'.

I know for my first week or so I'm not likely to be doing much apart from being a college lackey (making coffee etc) but what should I prepare for in the role?

What is the average salary a Systems Admin also gets?

Do you know a programming language (preferably a scripting language such as Perl or Python)?

Do you have any experience with Gahnoo/Linux?

Do you love fixing things that are broken by retards?

I'm pretty decent at C# but from a hobby perspective.

> Do you have any experience with Gahnoo/Linux?

Apart from pissing around with setting up SAMBA on my Pi and installing Fedora not really, I am eager to pick it up.

> Do you love fixing things that are broken by retards?

Of course. It makes me look smarter than I actually am.

I'm not to worried about the knowledge aspect of the apprenticeship. That's why I'm doing an apprenticeship as I want to learn, I don't know what to expect however so I'm pretty anxious.

Yeah, you should really look into a scripting language and start playing about with Linux.

Learn Vim and then insult your co-workers for not using Vim.

Any recommendations for projects I can do to improve my Linux skills?
>>
>>34959003
There's not much you can do "project" wise... If you're going into an apprenticeship, you should be relatively proficient with a CLI. I would suggest learning how to use a portion of GNU coreutils, and generally how to use a command line.
>>
>>34959035

I'm pretty proficient with CMD and in terms of Linux Terminals I know the typical cd, ls, pwd kinda commands.

I guess I'm going to be shadowing people for a while, I hope so anyway. I'm shit scared.

Forget it -- the faster, the better.

So you pretty much know nothing. Just listen to the actual sysadmin and pray he is not a Windows admin masquerading as someone else (hint: Linux admins NEVER use Windows box to run their terminals).
>>
>>34959126
That's fine, but from a Sysadmin standpoint the coreutils are very useful.

You shouldn't really worry, it seems like you'll do okay.

Know how I know you don't have a job?

Hint: People who do work aren't religious zealots.

Just pay attention to your supervisor and don't be afraid to ask questions. They should give you a run down of their network, what kind of services they have and how they manage them. They should take you through your duties, what they are and how they're to be performed.

Don't be too afraid to offer your opinion in discussions (just make sure it's relevant and valid). Sometimes they'll get things wrong, so if you can, outline why they're wrong without coming off as a dick. You'll get things wrong sometimes, and hopefully they'll do the same. Don't feel bad or resent constructive criticism. Everyone fucks up every now and then. Just try to learn from it.

Once you know a bit more about what they've got going on there you'll be able to research and learn things on your own. While familiarity with *NIX is a good thing, it won't help you if they're strictly a windows shop.

No. I am a developer.
> Hint: People who do work aren't religious zealots.

And only Windows zealots would use Windows to administer a non-Windows system.

This is very helpful advice and actually makes me feel better. I sometimes forget that I'm not the only person who fucks up haha.
>>
Oh man I'd love a mug with that smug tranny on it that reads: CISADMIN
>>
>>34958814 (OP)
Ss others have said, you need to get the hang of:
- bash (or possibly zsh or fish or something)
- vim
- Writing perl and/or shell scripts, python is less universal
- Basic networking
- how *nix systems do things; do you know what an inode is or what signals you can send a process?
disclaimer: I've only been using GNU/Linux for a year or two, so I'm hardly qualified to give you advice.
>>
>>34959696
if you can't scp or ssh natively on your system, how are you supposed to interact with a unix system reasonably?
>>
>>34958915
>I'm pretty decent at C# but from a hobby perspective.
That's MS crap, better learn Perl or Python. Not even mentioning bash, you have to know bash.

>Apart from pissing around with setting up SAMBA on my Pi and installing Fedora not really, I am eager to pick it up.

You what? How did you even get the position, guy?

What are you even trying to say, I don't get it.
>>
>>34960797

Because it's an apprenticeship, not a job. We had like an hour long interview where I told them what I do and don't know.
>>
I'm also going to be starting as a sys admin + dev in a week or so, OP. Should be good fun. Luckily I have experience with using Linux, the terminal, bash, Python, and fixing shit. Best of luck to you.
>>
>>34960906
Oh

carry on then

lrn2bash and Linux basics

Really, shit's all over the Internet
>>
>>34960734
I'm not saying he shouldn't learn how to do it at all. But it might not be important for the job. Get up to speed with what they need you to know first and then start expanding your horizons (plus points if you can apply it to your job, like automating tasks with scripts).

Kinda forgot about this thread...
