Hey /g/, I was wondering if my son could get by the newest Net Nanny.

I activated parental controls in windows so he can't delete, download, or move programs without my permission, plus I locked it to where he can't factory reset it or activate the hidden admin account in safe mode.

Is there any way he could get by it? (he's 13 and knows somewhat about computers)
>>
Install gentoo and don't download/delete all internet drivers
>>
If he's got a brain and learns how computers work, yeah he can bypass it.
>>
could probably boot from a USB linux installation and do whatever he wants
>>
He could just boot a linux live distro or even install it.

And no, I won't tell you how to protect from that. You can't deny him freedom.

He doesn't have access to another computer, and he can't download it on his.
>>
Unless you password protect the BIOS, there's no way to stop him from booting from CD or USB and deleting all his (or your) files.
>>
also inb4 someone says what kind of 13 yo would do this? I played around with Xubuntu when I was 12. I also learned that /dev/sda1 does not mean flash drive the hard way when I was 12 and wiped the computer I was using.
>>
You're a terrible parent OP.
>>
OP is in for a shock when the kid pwns Windows entirely.

Why are you denying him his freedom on the internet? I'm sure you have your reasons but what are they?

It's still possible to download an iso. iso aren't executable files.

kids learn fast. might as well make him learn something on his rabid search for porn
>>
>>34602872

What? He's not allowed to download stuff? Well, I'm sure it's possible to somehow circumvent this but he could also get a linux live cd from somewhere else. You can even buy them.

>>34602872
Unless you blocked him from the ability to download a .iso image or burn a CD, you haven't stopped shit.
>>
>>34602766 (OP)

If you're worried about him fapping to porn you're not gonna stop him.

There aren't many ways he can get around it, but just monitor him a little bit. Check out the computer after he's done with it and see if he managed to disable it/get around it.

Don't just install it and then walk away, never worrying about it again.

Reinstalling windows isn't that hard so if he fucks the machine over you can just start from scratch.

If you use the machine for work I highly suggest giving him a really cheap, old machine to fuck around on. So many times my family was ready to beat the shit out of me because I fucked the computer over when I was like, 12.

If he has his own machine he'll need to learn how to fix it if he breaks it.
>>
>>34602886
Except it's motivation for the kid to learn shit about the computer.
>>
>>34602766 (OP)

There is not 100% secure way to prevent tampering if he has hardware access.

Lock down the OS, BIOS password, lock the computer away, only give access to USB ports.

Approve all software installs.

Install a keylogger and remove view capabilities. Also watch the computer with multiple CCT cameras.
>>
What's hilarious about this is that all you'd have to do is set him up with an un-privileged user account (i.e. no su or sudo access) on Ubuntu and he'd be stopped cold in terms of damaging the OS or system-installed programs.
>>
>ITT: OP, a thirteen year old, convinces /g/ to tell him how to get past his parents computer blocks

>>
>>34605291
Here is the deal, it all depends on how smart he is. If he is fairly clever, almost nothing you do will prevent him from going too whatever website he wants. He will eventually figure out ways around Net Nanny.

Does he have friends? You are fucked if he does. All they have to do is download a live iso, slap it on a cheap flash drive, and then your Net Nanny just got hosed with semen.
>>
>>34605406
None of his friends that I know are smart like that, he has an online friend from America that helped him before (he got him to factory reset it, so I put a password on the BIOS)
>>
>>34605406
in a nutshell this. Unless he is forbidden physical access from the tower and is using like a network computer, well there is really no stopping him. If he was on a network computer though, if he's also a software and networking wizard, shit outta luck bro.
>>
>>34605493
Maybe do some parenting? Might be the solution to your problem. Take the damn thing away from him and lock it up. Supervise him while he uses the computer. He is a fucking child and you are an adult. You can change his behavior instead of looking for technology to parent for you.
>>
>>34605519
I took it from him for a while and gave it back after he did a factory format on it but I reinstalled net nanny and made my account admin with a password so he can't do anything.
>>
>>34605570
You're so fucking stupid. He can format and reinstall without even booting into the hard drive at all, which bypasses Net Nanny.
>>
>>34605406
>clever
>racist
Yeah, no.
>>
>>34605644
Normally I would say this because OP mentioned a BIOS password, (which can be reset btw) but on Windows, there is the f8 menu which is basically built into windows. It's basically a built in MS DaRT which gives you full access for diagnosing and repairing problems from the disk.

A three-year-old can do that.

OP it will not matter because your son will find a way to look at porn. On his phone, Ipod, or tablet. You cant set up parental controls on those
>>
>>34605881
Not to encourage OP or anything, but yes he can. He can set his router settings to filter out anything he wants, including ports and MAC addresses.
>>
>>34605881

>>
OP is trying to make up for poor parenting with more poor parenting.
>>
>>34604694
When you go to a website in the background your computer first has to look up the computer address which is a bunch of numbers. So if you type in "google.com" it has to ask a DNS server what address that is (like 61.55.43.10 or something).

Normally your ISP provides this service to your computer automatically, but you can set up your computer (quite easily) to use other DNS services. OpenDNS is one of them. It's free, and you can set different filtering levels, meaning you can filter adult content if you want. So if someone tries to go to sex.com or something the computer first has to lookup the computer address, but OpenDNS detects that it's porn and since you've set up to block porn it doesn't let the page load at all. This uses zero system resources on your end because it's the OpenDNS servers doing the filtering.

>>34602766 (OP)

I was 13 once, and I would hate your guts for doing this.
