Dear Google users—

You may be aware of press reports alleging that Internet companies have joined a secret U.S. government program called PRISM to give the National Security Agency direct access to our servers. As Google’s CEO and Chief Legal Officer, we wanted you to have the facts.

First, we have not joined any program that would give the U.S. government—or any other government—direct access to our servers. Indeed, the U.S. government does not have direct access or a “back door” to the information stored in our data centers. We had not heard of a program called PRISM until yesterday.

Second, we provide user data to governments only in accordance with the law. Our legal team reviews each and every request, and frequently pushes back when requests are overly broad or don’t follow the correct process. Press reports that suggest that Google is providing open-ended access to our users’ data are false, period. Until this week’s reports, we had never heard of the broad type of order that Verizon received—an order that appears to have required them to hand over millions of users’ call records. We were very surprised to learn that such broad orders exist. Any suggestion that Google is disclosing information about our users’ Internet activity on such a scale is completely false.

Finally, this episode confirms what we have long believed—there needs to be a more transparent approach. Google has worked hard, within the confines of the current laws, to be open about the data requests we receive. We post this information on our Transparency Report whenever possible. We were the first company to do this. And, of course, we understand that the U.S. and other governments need to take action to protect their citizens’ safety—including sometimes by using surveillance. But the level of secrecy around the current legal procedures undermines the freedoms we all cherish.

>Facebook: "We do not provide any government organization with direct access to Facebook servers. When Facebook is asked for data or information about specific individuals, we carefully scrutinize any such request for compliance with all applicable laws, and provide information only to the extent required by law."[20]
>Google: "Google cares deeply about the security of our users' data. We disclose user data to government in accordance with the law, and we review all such requests carefully. From time to time, people allege that we have created a government ‘back door' into our systems, but Google does not have a backdoor for the government to access private user data."[20]
>Apple: "We have never heard of PRISM. We do not provide any government agency with direct access to our servers, and any government agency requesting customer data must get a court order."[21]
>Microsoft: "We provide customer data only when we receive a legally binding order or subpoena to do so, and never on a voluntary basis. In addition we only ever comply with orders for requests about specific accounts or identifiers. If the government has a broader voluntary national security program to gather customer data we don't participate in it."[20]

Well, these sorts of things can be handled by private companies which report to the government. So if that's happening he's not lying, just being sneaky.

>Second, we provide user data to governments only in accordance with the law.

So, no mention that only Google and the end user is the only one with access to the data. Of course after saying this I feel relatively stupid, because Google's entire business model revolves around selling data and making it available for third parties.

Windows did not come with an encryption program until Vista. This key was found in Windows 2000. Therefore, this is a cryptographic key that could only potentially unlock Windows system files... at worst, they could use it to bypass your Windows password (you know, like how the dozens of freeware programs you can find through a single Google search for "windows password cracker" can do).

Once in the brain, they're there for good. Any attempt to dislodge them from the brain tissue will cause them to enter emergency mode, deploy their nanosaws, and collectively shred the brain tissue into mush altogether.

Unless you do something like this they will just record garbage. The only way to fuck an encrypted connection is to act as a proxy between both sides from the start of a session, either by making it restart somehow or by taking it from the start. The ISP can do both, so it doesn't matter too much.

Google DOES NOT SELL DATA, BECAUSE IT IS NOT PROFITABLE TO SELL DATA.

Google keeps all the data to themselves, they make advertisers pay them a recurring fee(this would not be possible if they sold the data)to use the data for them(i.e. display the advertisers ads to the intended audience)

As someone who has advertised on Google, I can say with complete certainty that you have no fucking clue what you're saying.

Google isn't a search engine. It's a data mining company which sells access to its data and traffic.

This is fearmongering for "they're awkward and anxious". Social anxiety is indeed linked to pedophilia and violent outbursts, but is a symptom instead of a cause.

Or because it's small and homogeneous.

If you even shifted power to the states, america would plunge itself into civil war within a decade. If you eliminated the federal government entirely, two thirds of the country would collapse and the pacific coast would join canada.

I will put in an executive order on Monday mandating that we throw out all Microsoft software and stop using external services like dropbox and google accounts out of convenience. Will also ask IT to block Google and other American search engines in the firewall. These companies clearly doesn't respect our privacy and are probably leaking our financial data so American companies can outbid us. It's a small company with a few hundred employees but at least it's a start.

You don't have situations where one state allows every aspect of bestiality and an adjacent state has it completely outlawed, or one allows cannabis possession and use and another has a state police force that cracks down extra hard on weed.

Places like texas would just flat out secede and shoot anyone that tried to stop them.

I know it's unlikely, but imagine that some day they decided to ban furry porn and send everybody that has seen furry to a concentration camp. Again, this is unlikely, but you could expect some fines for searching "torrent sites" or "where to download this movie" in a future. What's worse, it could be done in a retroactive way.

Advanced societies realize that no matter what your weird fetishes are, you're a source of labor and taxes. Then they tell you that you need to keep them behind closed doors and if you don't you're going to be charged with sexually harassing the general public, because there's a line between free thought and going all out to destroy your culture.

not unless you become a political threat
>>
>>34399509
If you were a terrorist threat then they'd just shoot you. Honestly that's the way it should be, then maybe we could have avoided shit like the Boston bombings or the Arizona shooting where we had prior intel about the people who committed the crimes.
>>
>>34399482
Damage control. Nobody wants to admit that they let the government have free access to all their information. Admitting so may even be against the law, or against whatever weird agreement they have with the government.

Also, the first company to ADMIT they do this would suffer a PR nightmare and users would jump ship. All these canned press releases serve no other purpose than to calm their users so business as usual can resume.
>>
>>34399537
We've been spied on for years, yet Boston still happened. How do you explain that?
>>
>>34399415
Let me put it this way:

>The NSA has some proof that someone might be a terrorist/pedophile/whatever
>They want to access the Google servers to check
>They talk to a judge and wait one or just a few day
>The judge sees the proof
>Is it enough? Yes/No

>Yes
>The NSA gives the warrant to Google
>They see the content related to their account
>They catch the criminal

>No
>There was not enough proof
>The NSA needs more solid proof in order to get a warrant
>This means they didn't really know if it was really a terrorist and were just going to check "just in case"

Now, you want this way:
>The NSA has some proof that the guy is a terrorist/pedophile/whatever
>They check Google's database
>Was it a criminal? Yes/No

>Yes
>You had good luck and your suspicion was right

>No
>You just checked the guy's account for shits and giggles but... what's that? Did he download this file protected by intellectual property?
>Fined for downloading a single fucking music disc
>>
>>34399444

>>34399484
Because America has a track record of being a nanny state that likes to tell its citizens the difference between right and wrong and doing all they can to preserve as much of the status quo as possible.

What's simple political opinions today could be encouraging terrorism and treason tomorrow. Hello next red scare.

Did you let it slip that you use some form of encryption? Enjoy being a target the moment a law outlawing them passes (to keep us safe from them pedos and terrorists). But if you're not someone the government finds gross or too politically incorrect, you have nothing to fear, right? Except the RIAA/MPAA lawsuits when police find any amount of copyrighted material that was obviously not paid for.

And your porn? Every 4chan user's precious porn? That adult woman's chest was too flat, you fucking pedophile, and that image did not appeal to prurient interest or meet community standards. We're taking you in on obscenity charges.
