Daily reminder to upgrade your technology once every 5 years.

I like updating technology once every 5 years.

Remember in the early 2000s, when people made the transition from dial up internet to broadband? It was mind blowing. Likewise, when you’re updating technology once every 5 years, it’s mind blowing. Instead of experiencing incremental changes, you get to see quantum leaps. It’s the best bang for your bucks.

But my reasoning is more simple. I don’t want technology to take over my life. I don’t have Facebook, twitter, pinterest or instagram. I don’t want the latest gadget because it just distracts life. I do have a smart phone, and I plan on upgrading new phones once every 5 years. As for my laptop? 5 years. My computer monitor? 5 years. The 5 years is nice. Upgrading every 7 years is pushing it. Technology moves fast, and 5 years time is dinosaur time. But the reality is, I spend the majority of my time on the computer browsing the internet and writing.

There is no need to upgrade phone every 12 months, or a computer every 2.5 years.
>>
See you next year.
>>
/g/ is not your personal blog
>>
>>33105037 (OP)
Do you upgrade it all at the same time?
>>
7 year old Toshiba here. Forced me to start optimizing my distro to get every last drop of power out of it.

I can't wait till the company I'm interning at gives me a new machine and phone.
>>
>>33105037 (OP)
>There is no need to upgrade phone every 12 months

Imagine still using an iPhone 1G, oh wait it would be pretty much the same. ahahaha
>>
>>33105037 (OP)
Or don't upgrade at all since you won't use the tech anyway, I'm still rocking a Q6600 on my desktop : not a single fuck given about the i - series.
>>
How bout an every-five-years reminder instead?

fuckoff shittroll.
>>
>>33105118
Nigger.
>>
Dial-up->ADSL was big because of the new content the switch made available. It's been a decade since then - the content hasn't changed enough to require a new connection method. Netflix? Spotify? All served well enough over ADSL.

Upgrading a system every 5 years? The vast majority of people are doing the same thing with their laptop/desktop they were doing years ago. Those that aren't are hardly pushing their technical limits. 1920x1080 content? We had 1920x1080 monitors back in 2008.

>I don’t want technology to take over my life.
You've dedicated yourself to buying things you already have twice a decade. Go hang yourself.
>>
Good luck having a smartphone that lasts more than 24 months.

(Planned obsolescence nigger.)
>>
>>33105037 (OP)
Why even update every 5 years then?

You could easily go 7 or 8, more if you're not doing anything computationally expensive.
>>
>>33105278

Hmmmm

Not necessarily.

I am on a Macbook from 2008, and it's on it's last legs. After playing minecraft or watching a youtube video, it freezes for 2-3 minutes, so I just reboot it.
>>
>>33105037 (OP)
You just don't have facebook because you don't have any friends.
>>
>>33105272
I can't believe my 10 year old dumb phone is still going strong.
>>
>>33105324
sounds like you're maintaining it poorly.
>>
But technology has a reached a plateau. Internet doesn't need to be faster than what most people already have. I mean, you can download a song in a second and a film in a few minutes. My computer is using fairly old hardware but I could have around 8 1080p streams going at once.

You don't need to upgrade anymore. A char is still a char.
>>
>upgrading your phone every 5 years
Christ, man, every two is a huge leap already. Phone tech isn't progressing at a natural rate. It's just re-treading the same ground desktop/laptop components went over ten years ago, and it's doing it a hell of a lot faster.

Two years is already a massive leap in this sector.
>>
>>33105385

Nope.

Never done anything more than play flash games and browse the web.

Outside still looks good.

(And how can "Maintaining it poorly" cause it to slow down?)
>>
>>33105324
That's your fault my desktop from 2008 is still fine.
>>
>>33105438

There's more to looking after it then just not downloading trash.

Fist thing I would do is consider temperatures.
Try setting up a script to log the cpu & gpu temperatures, then playing Minecraft for a while.

If that doesn't find anything interesting, then yeah, you might be best reloading the OS.
>>
Coming up to 4 years with my machine. Might do so soon, but no real need for it just yet. Still holds up nicely.

Every 5 years? Meh. I can get a decade out of a good laptop, and outside of the computer realm my technology items often date back decades.

It's not all about raw power. My main PC is a ThinkPad T23 from 2002, but it's a fantastic machine with a good keyboard, TrackPoint, and higher resolution display than most brand new laptops (1400x1050). For me those kind of things affect overall usability more than CPU power, at least when the CPU power is sufficient for my usage, as the 1.13GHz Pentium III has proven to be to this day.

You people generate so much waste.by "upgrading" so often. Use an object until it is unusable and irreparable then recycle the unsalvagable parts
>>
>>33105037 (OP)
Upgrading your phone every year is because you want or need the latest features. Ditto upgrading your computer.

You think we all upgrade yearly because we're technoph- oh wait, this is /g/, Carry on.
>>
>>33105411
>this
Also so long as you don't cheap out and buy shit that's designed to break quick and the like then you're good till it dies basically. Processors have been fine since Core 2 and Phenom 2, for example, but something like a Celeron was never made to last and would warrent an upgrade fairly quickly.
>>
>>33105930
does it count as unusable if it heats up to 90ºC to open word?
>>
Fuck X"years" upgrades.

If my computer does everything I want it to, I'm not upgrading. That's a waste of money.

On the other hand, if super-duper high resolution monitors come out that requires a new GPU, then I'm upgrading my GPU and monitor as soon as it's affordable just because I really want high resolution monitors.
>>
>>33105973
T221?
>>
>>33105921
Considering how old it is it works pretty well. That Intel GMA must outperform the Radeon. I have what was considered the lowest end model anyway. I was thinking about getting a mobo with a better GPU. Has your display dimmed at all from its age?
>>
>>33105984
>T221
>affordable
>>
>>33105830
Wow, you think the only people with jobs have it due to nepotism? You are a pathetic faggot.
>>
>>33105998
My T42's 2D performance seemed rather poor in Ubuntu, but better in Windows. Also a 1400x1050 machine with Radeon 7500.

My backlight didn't seem to dim much, but rather it turned pink and became unsuitable for use after about 20,000 hours. Shame, because it was a great machine otherwise.
>>
>>33105998
Not too sure.

It's certianly dimmer than modern led screens and such. Compared to my t60 and other ccfl thinkpads, it seems about the same, although they might have dimmed also.

It probably has, but I have nothing to compare it to, and slow changes like these are hard to notice.
It probably has, but
I can still see it outside, so I'm fine though.

As for the cards, same thing with my t60 with a v5200 vs intel 965.
The v5200, when set to medium power, chokes on desktop effects.
Intel handles it perfectly with less power use.
>>
>>33106053
That's a shame.

>>33106063
Mine is a bit yellow, although I only notice it when compared against my new monitors.
>>
>>33105037 (OP)
Sometimes I do things that I want to do, not that I need to do.
>>
I generally upgrade my tech when the old thing breaks or when I get the possibility to get something better for cheap/free. something like 5 years sounds about right, except I've gone through a damn lot of laptops since they just keep on breaking on me (and getting them used means no warranties)

the thing about technology taking over your life, I don't mind it as long as it isn't an obsession. as long as I'm just using the web/etc for convenience and/or a little fun, its fine. when I start to feel obsessed, I try to break the habit, so far I've managed well. being obsessed with a website/service/chat is the fucking worst, especially since nowadays you can truly use that shit all the time with smartphones and tablets

No, 10 years is pushing it. 7 years is probably at it's last leg. I mean, say it's 10 years. Can you really be using a laptop from 2003 for every day use like watching 720p youtube? Probably not.

Internet browsing takes some patience. Everything else is quite fast and responsive. The only thing I can't do at all that I would like to is watching HD video. 720p video, even with a good video player, is completely impossible. Aside from performance, there's something strange with the GPU/driver which prevents video with a resolution greater than 1024x768 from displaying properly. Aside from that it still serves well enough in daily usage, and I use it for around 12 hours a day every day.

>>33106486
T60 is my dream machine, but it would have to have a Flexview display, and they're getting rare. Also, I have terrible luck with display defects, and I'm especially leery of these old CCFL backlights after having my T42's backlight turn pink. I bought a Flexview T60 once which was guaranteed flawless and it arrived with dozens of stuck subpixels. People just can't be trusted to check an LCD for defects, and I can't really afford to send back defective machines until I get a good one.
>>
>>33106594
There a guy who offers led flexview panels for 120 without shipping on thinkpad forums. I've used him, and it turned out well.
>>
>>33106656
I probably wouldn't feel comfortable buying a machine on the basis of getting a display separately, but I am curious about those LED panels. I've heard they have extremely high brightness levels, and I'm not sure how low they can be dimmed, which is vitally important for me.

I understand, I had the same concern.
It's about as bright as my ccfl panel on medium, more or less.
Also, while there are only t40 flexviews on ebay currently, I've seen t60 flexviews on there fairly often, typically for 300-400.
>>
>>33106778
I still see them fairly often, but the sellers often don't even list the resolution of the panels or the fact that they're Flexview, let alone the condition of the panel and backlight. With 99% of people, it would be a complete gamble. I could ask them about bad pixels, pressure marks, backlight condition, etc. but most people seem incapable of seeing these kinds of issues so it's always a gamble of ~$20 for return shipping.

I'd pay top dollar for one in a heartbeat if only I could test it myself, but one does not simply find Flexview ThinkPads locally where I live.

are you looking up t60p uxga?
Can normally find one or two on ebay.

They are flexview if 1600 by 1200, no tn panels at that res for t60.

I've found that if they describe it as in new condition, it tend to come out nicely.
Also, there is always the led ones, nearly as good quality, and less power use.

I've had so many brand new LCD panels come with defects that new condition means little to me.
