Common sense says to use an antivirus, because not only do you have to trust the site you go to, but you have to trust their ad server too. It's not just once that someone bought ads to serve up malware on legitimate sites.

If you use Windows and run around bare-arse-nakkid on the 'net without an anti-malware package, you are a fool.
>>
I do the same thing and encourage others to the same, becuase every AV software I've seen is bullshit malware that makes false claims.

>>
>>34194044
Agreed - I stopped using Antivirus years ago - I simply rely on a firewall and common sense. If you're not downloading crap, you simply don't get infected. If my system does get infected, I install an antivirus program to remove it or I find the manual way to remove it. If I DO install antivirus to remove it, I also remove that crap as well as soon as I remove the virus. I've had maybe 2-3 virus's in the last 10 years and I rarely re-install my systems (both windows and linux).

I've voluntarily installed all the Java viruses the guy from nyaa uploads and this is to bring up my main problem with AV.

1) It would not, nor could stop someone from double clicking that executable file and giving permission to install it. This is how almost all "viruses" are installed, voluntarily. What is an AV doing? Literally nothing but bullshit, it's not protecting you. It's not even protecting you from stuff like exploits people find for the java plugin in internet browsers.

2) I would bet a very large amount of money any AV on Earth would reverse the damage that shit did to that VM running windows.
>>
>>34194175

>If my system does get infected, I install an antivirus program to remove it or I find the manual way to remove it

The useful bit of an antivirus is that you can use it prophylactically, to scan incoming files that your friends/cow-orkers send you.

If you are using an antivirus to clean up *after* an infection, you're doing it wrong.

Also, if you don't run anti-virus, how do you know you're infected? Weird computer behavior? When that shows up, you've got not one, but probably a dozen up to hundreds (I've seen this) all fighting over resources.

tl;dr: You're a moron.
>>
>>34194180

could not*
>>
>>34194206

>if you don't run anti-virus, how do you know you're infected?

Because I haven't voluntarily installed the viruses, which has they almost have to installed outside very, very rare cases.
>>

>>
>>34194243

That entire sentence was complete nonsense.

Who the fuck voluntarily installs viruses, outside of people like me who play with them in VMs?
>>
>>34194238

No, I'm the guy who uses AV and gets on with my shit. You're the guy who doesn't use AV and feels the need to brag about it in order to justify your decision.

>i dont use le av cos i am 2 gud with computar for virus

Stay pleb.
>>
>>34194279

By voluntarily, I mean running an executable file.

If you did this because you're a naive dipshit, that's still voluntarily.
>>
>>34194238
Not any of the faggots you're arguing with but if you choose to run Windows and you don't use an antivirus they you're fucking retarded. There's not reason not to use an av. Getting viruses doesn't just happen because you're not cautious about what you download or run. If you care at all about security and not being the further cause of malware spread, then you have every reason to us an av.
>>
>>34193628 (OP)

Why do you need /g/ to validate your decision to leave your computer unprotected?
>>
>>34194206
Well, put simply, I've used computers for almost 30 years now - Any one with half a brain can tell when their computer is doing something it's not suppose to. Clearly in a business environment you should be running an anti-virus - But for home use, there is simply no reason unless you're a moron or like to install stupid crap - If I'm worried about installing something I don't trust, I simply run a VM and test it out first.

Like I said - I've had may 2-3 virus's in the past 10 years - Clearly common sense goes a long way.

I'm not a moron - I'm simply not stupid. (The fact that I'm also a programmer likely helps) but what I've said stands true for anyone with a fair amount of computer knowledge. The rules are simple - And those who have been using computers a while are well aware of the tricks required to keeping your system clean.
>>
>>34194309
>By voluntarily, I mean running an executable file.If you did this because you're a naive dipshit, that's still voluntarily.

Consent, how does it fuckin' work?

Are you 12?
>>
>>34194343

>If I'm worried about installing something I don't trust, I simply run a VM and test it out first.

Right so in order to combat bloat you use a VM to test programs instead of scanning the files with an AV.

Seems legit.
>>
>>34194347

Consent means when a monkey double clicks the executable file called hothornyteens.avi.exe, the UAC dialog pops up, and the monkey gives it permission to run itself.
>>
>>34194343
>Any one with half a brain can tell when their computer is doing something it's not suppose to.

Anyone with half a brain knows you can get drive-by installs by going to legitimate sites that have been compromised. Or have you been asleep for the past 12 years.

>using computers for 30 years

And yet you still haven't learned a fucking thing about reality.
>>
>>34194370

The AV is a placebo that wouldn't detect anything though.
>>
>>34194388

I totally agree bro, it makes so much more sense to set up a VM and wait to see if anything goes wrong.

lol stupid AV plebs xD
>>
>>34194378

>you can get drive-by installs

This is 100% utter bullshit, holy fucking hell, kill you'reself. Nothing is installing itself on your computer from a website without you giving it permission.

>>34194343

A good virus would make it so you would never be able to tell it's existence on the computer. Well, other than ones created as jokes.
>>
>>34194370
I've installed a VM maybe 5 times in the past 10 years (and even then usually only used it for a week or two) - Not really a big deal. Clearly not bloat either.
>>
>>34194376

>Consent means when a monkey double clicks the executable file called hothornyteens.avi.exe, the UAC dialog pops up, and the monkey gives it permission to run itself.

You're the naive one who thinks that malware is this obvious.

I'm sure you're one of those who thinks that "false positives" are actually false positives in pirated software.
>>
>>34194430
>This is 100% utter bullshit, holy fucking hell, kill you'reself. Nothing is installing itself on your computer from a website without you giving it permission.

>I've installed a VM maybe 5 times in the past 10 years (and even then usually only used it for a week or two) - Not really a big deal. Clearly not bloat either.

Yeah, seems legit.

Opening a pdf that a colleague or friend sends you.
>>
>>34194318
>There's not reason not to use an av
All of the active monitoring AVs are a huge hit to performance.
>>
>>34194433

By the way, often time AV software does mark every little crack as a virus.

Daz loader is a virus to almost all AV programs.
>>
>>34193628 (OP)
Do you have tcpdump or tshark on your router instead? Are you actually retarded?
>>
>>34194509
Not him, but that's still voluntary. Your friends are also dumb for having virus infested pdf's and running them with a program that lets that shit happen.
>>
>>34194443

Pretty friggin' rare to get attacked by that...
>>
>>34194509

You're not getting a virus from a pdf file. It might find a way to exploit the program you open it with though. Situations like these are unbelievably rare. It requires that you open the file with a specific program too.
>>
>>34194531
>Not him, but that's still voluntary

No it isn't. You aren't consenting to run a fucking virus when you open a pdf.

I would hurl the "you're autistic" accusation at you, but I'll just say that you're dumb.

>>34194571

>.You're not getting a virus from a pdf file.

Oh look, someone who doesn't believe in viruses attached to pdfs.

>It might find a way to exploit the program you open it with though. Situations like these are unbelievably rare

No they're not.

Denial is not just a river in Egypt, is it?
>>
>>34194513
>i7 920

>>
>>34194443
>>34194544

FYI - A 0-day exploit is someone forcing their way through your system (usually) by a means other than the user executing it. Ex: User is running a specific operating system that can be exploited through some means (there is software out there to make this quite easy) however, most virii do not make use of 0-day exploits because they are patched quickly. But for someone wanting to get immediate access to a system will make use of these exploits, and gain immediate access to the system. With the root level access their 0-day exploit is likely giving them they can they do whatever they want on that system.

0-day exploits are why updates are so important. But truthfully - How often do you REALLY have someone on the other side trying to hack into your system - Unless you're in the scene and pissing people off.

FYI - Metasploit - Happy Hacking Faggots
>>
>>34194614

He is saying that you are willingly running the virus because everyone KNOWS that you can get a virus through a pdf just like everyone KNOWS that you can get a virus from Java or ActiveX.

Yet, everyone KNOWS that you cannot get a virus (or a least a seriously damaging one) through thinks like javascript or vbscript or loading a picture through your browser.

Yes, VBScript and Javascript can run annoying scripts to bring your system to a screeching halt, but they CANNOT damager your system. Kill the process and issue is solved.
