Any of you have a server for personal use? I'm considering paying for one. How much storage/bandwidth can I get for a reasonable price?

I'm hoping for as much storage as possible; I really want to move a bunch of terabytes of data out of my external hard drive. Processing power is a quite secondary concern; I'm not really expecting any traffic beyond my own.

People recommended me ovh, but their cheapest offer only gives me like 25 GB. No deal...

so $152 a month for 2TB?
>>

That's pretty expensive. About $60 for 1TB reduced availability.

I was hoping for something like $20 for 4 TB.

At that point, I would just buy a server and colocate it. You can jam as many drives in there as you want.

I have my own dedicated server machine. This machine is not rented from other people. I paid for it in full and it uses my home connection. My home connection is a business ADSL connection because I needed the various services that they offered that isn't offered in the residential service.

Could you provide details, please? I'm still quite new at this. What does colocating servers mean?

After a drive failed some time ago I've been getting paranoid about the safety of my data. I'm looking for something safer than my external drive, with redundancy options, hopefully transparent/managed.

I'll probably encrypt the data, and if it's a server, run ownCloud on it to have easy access. As well as hosting my personal git repositories and things like dotfiles on dedicated subdomains.

It's nice that it works for you, but I don't have time to manage server hardware, unfortunately.

Also, I'd prefer to not use my home connection; it's pretty bad already and it would be pretty much unusable in high-traffic situations. I'd upgrade to business class connection but my area has seriously shitty coverage.

I'm still wondering why I can't have the cheap hardware with the 2x1TB storage option...

Does it need to be online? Is natural disaster, fire or theft a worry?

Maybe all you need is a RAID?
>>
>>35572629
No, but hard drive failures are. If I can put a cloud on top of it it would be nice as well. Maybe run a bunch of servers: mpd, git, ftp, etc.

I don't really have a lot of time nowadays. I'd really like something I can set up once and then not worry about it anymore. Or at least not have to micromanage it. Unfortunately the costs seem to be prohibitively high.

>holy shit guys everything is unfuckinglimited!
>its only $10/month

http://www.dreamhost.com/unlimited-policy/

>yeah we said unlimited but try to keep it to a few GBs please
>otherwise you'll be invited (required) to sign up for your own more expensive VPS
>basically, even though we gave you unlimited storage and bandwidth, you can't do anything with it

>This whole page is just to announce to the <.1% of people who want to try and run free porn affiliate sites or anime video trading forums or host pirated rips of The Dark Knight on DreamHost that we’re not having any.

Holy fucking shit
