Last weekend we conducted 4chan PMQ/Q&A #3, with 1400 people contributing 4500 posts over 22 hours. I managed to spend the better part of a day answering as many questions as possible—thread here.
Since loading large threads can be a bit of a pain on slower computers, you can also see my replies from the /q/ index (hover over the "Administrator Replies" quotelinks).

Blu-Ray: The LaserDisc of our generation. You know it's true. I don't know anyone with an extensive bluray collection that wasn't pirated.

Shit you don't even get bootleg blurays.

Im building a blu ray collection. Not much yet, but its on its way. Usually ill download a movie and then if its good enough I'll buy it.
>>
DVD offered surround sound, commentary, multiple languages, captions, easy rewind/fast forward (plus chapters), no need to rewind before return, and lack of degradation.

Analog to digital was huge... the move to Blu-Ray is great, but not as much.

plus studios inflated blu ray prices to stupid proportions
>>
wow, that was 7 years ago and i havent even seen one.

in the first years the readers were way to expensive, but for the obvious use as a storage medium you need a writer which are even more expensive and werent even widely available until much later

There are no more possible improvements.
BR discs hold 25GB, and double-layer holds upwards of 50GB. Movies, even at 4k, won't consume that.

I like digital distribution for it's convenience, but I dislike that it's actually a step back in quality typically and it feels kind of distant compared to owning hard copies.

Every so often I'll buy a Bluray of a film I really enjoy, every time it seems like it takes longer and longer to get to the actual film because the bluray is too busy shoving advertisements and an introduction to all the useless, intrusive features the disc comes with.

>By 1997, it is the standard, and outsells VHS
[citation needed]

Anyway the leap from DVD to BD was not as significant as the leap from VHS to DVD. Many people do not have HDTVs, almost all BD players are backwards compatible with DVD, BD doesn't reduce the hassle of DVDs (tracking, rewinding) and BD doesn't cut the space of your DVD collection by 90%. It's easy to see why the average consumer doesn't care as much to upgrade, especially with the popularity of streaming services in recent years.

How does this make BD laserdisc? It can co-exists with its predecessor while still being a success.

People don't realise that Blu-ray shits all over HD TV.

HD TV has a lot of loss during transmission.
The on-demand services are HD movies of sixes of 1.5 - 4GB, there is over 30GB on a Blu-ray.

If you want to watch movies in the absolute highest quality available, then Blu-ray is really the only way to go, there is a huge difference in quality and that found on a regular HD channel.

Neither of them are science fiction. They're both fantasy. Star Wars is just a samurai movie that needlessly takes place in space, with a few sprinkles of magic (i.e. the force). Ask yourself if Star Wars would have suffered thematically if you took out the space ships and set it on Earth. Nope, the character arcs would have been exactly the same and the themes wouldn't change at all. Could you do the same thing to Blade Runner by removing the androids? Nope.
>>
You are truly dumb if you compare blu-ray to laser disc.
>>
blu-ray was necessary for storing hd and full-hd content.

everyone can and should agree that DVD resolution is piss poor.

also don't compare a switch to analog to digital to a switch between digital formats. the advantages to DVD vs. VHS were clear and it was a direct upgrade for consumers. blu-ray vs dvd is just a trade off between higher or lower resolution.
>>
>>33914052

>I guess sure..

If serious, this is from December last year after Win8 install.
>>
>>33914136
>sure, just remove the realism and say "magic"
Except that wouldn't translate because the point was to provide a scenario which was possible in the future and then question the consequences of it. Magic is not real, technology is. By changing that detail, you're removing the gravity behind the entire story.

Taking place in space and including things like space travel, laser pistols, spaceships, interplanetary war, faster-than-light travel, aliens, robots, tractor beams, holographic displays, robot suits, etc. makes it science fiction. It could work as a non-sci-fi film, but it is science fiction.
>>
>>33914125
The difference is the climate.

No one gave a shit about laserdisc because the discs were fuckhuge, the player expensive, and there weren't HDTV's around.

Now most people will enjoy watching a DVD on an HDTV, especially since lots of DVD players upscale to 1080 anyway (and do a decent enough job at it)

Blu-ray isn't going anywhere because it is the best possible next step, since digital distribution is not realistic at this point, and making discs will always be cheaper than giving out usb sticks or some other stupid idea people in threads like this have.

nigga pls
>>
>>33914197

Analoge IMAX is better then digital IMAX, be happy you get the good stuff.
>>
>>33914219
It's science fiction on an incredibly shallow level then. It's as science fiction as a Titanic remake that uses a spaceship instead of a boat.
>>
BDs are shit because of the DRM

there's something really wrong if you need to rip the movie you paid for to be able to watch it in your computer

I'm just gonna keep pirating
>>
>>33913836
The only BD only releases I've seen have been a couple of anime releases from NIS America or Aniplex of America, and anime's already a pretty niche market.

HD scene.

The invite has been sent!
>>
>>33914235
I am. I also get to enjoy a fantastic view while walking down musical stairs afterwards :D
>>
>>33914275

I feel sorry for you, but if that's what you're after then SceneHD or SCC are the best.
>>
>>33914221
>since digital distribution is not realistic at this point,

It will be soon, probably sooner than the next when the medium is finalized. Sony, Red, Netflix etc are all working on launching their 4k digital distribution platforms.
>>
>>33914260
It's bullshit because you need a monitor with the goddamn drm to watch it.

It's so annoying.
>>
>>33913995
No, I don't think it even supports 2k.

That would also be sci-fi, yes.
>>
>>33914306
Why? What's wrong with that? I'm just looking for the best quality movie, and in my experience that is HD scene. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

>tfw my IMAX always shows the 1570 print of a movie.

I love it so much.

Absolutely pointless unless the movie was actually shot in 15perf 70mm otherwise you're just getting a cropped picture for what's actually a rather ugly ratio for movies.
>>
>>33913532
Yea but the bluray is amazing
>>
>>33914256
Doctor Who did that. Cyborgs were second-class citizens.
>>
>>33914402
Is that supposed to be blurry?
>>
>>33914387

Scene doesn't give a shit about quality, they just want to win their pathetic 'race'. Their 'rules' don't get updated fast enough either. Also for them:

size > quality
>>
>>33914444
Ok, thanks. What should I be looking for then?
>>
>>33914411
The one I'm talking about requires a specific camera and only plays in that kind of dome theater.

And if they all have their own proprietary method it will be useless.

Welcome to the real world, where not everyone has a fat pipe for downloading.

Optical media is here to stay for a long time.

>>33914336
Yes it supports 4k, do some research.
>>
>>33914387
>in my experience that is HD scene.

It's wrong. Everything scene is encoded to presets using the same bitrate regardless. All 2pass shit.

P2P is much better groups, that care about quality. Groups like EBP, DON, ESiR.

Unless you use YIFY garbage.
>>
>>33914187
I usually get NTb WEB-DLs they mux DD5.1 sound in
>>
>>33913219
Braveheart takes has 2 blu-ray discs.
>>
>>33914347
I thought that was why digital Imax wasn't real "IMAX".
>>
>>33914094
BD also came out when most people still had SD TVs
>>
>>33914434
It's straight from the flash video from where the VODs came from before Ankama nuked them from their site. And before I re-encoded them to the mkv's and uploaded to kat.ph and where ever else they ended up on.

What percentage of buyfags can't into non-physical media?

And sync the subs!
>>

Internal encoding groups at private trackers.

Such as: CtrlHD, ESiR, EbP, DON, BluHD.

Those groups encode for transparency, not filesize.
>>

>Yes it supports 4k

No it doesn't.

But won't the PS4 and next Xbox use Blu-Ray?
>>
>>33914528
>BluHD
They actually any good.

I read they were experimenting with four layer bds for up to 200gb. They said it would be possible to upgrade older players to the new tech with as fw update.
>>
>>33914477
>>33914528
Ok, thanks! Now I just need to get into a private tracker that has these.
>>
>>33914494

Yep, LIEMAX.

>>33914549

Yes, I am part of them and can guarantee it.
>>
>>33914545
We'll know in two days.
