OK /g/ that thread was ridiculous but we need to talk about something I discovered years ago back when we were all still using XP

So I was trying to turn the normal 3.5GB Windows XP installation into something much smaller, like about 500MB. I got to using nLite (is that correct) or something and I was able to basically get into XP and take away whatever I didn't like. In the middle of configuring my custom XP installer, I found something... It said there's a feature in XP where all your activity is sent back to Microsoft HQ (for usage tracking purposes). This wasn't new to me because I'd been sending my own usage stats to Mozilla voluntarily (using Firefox). What shocked me was that this "feature" in XP tracked all your stats automatically and they didn't say a fucking thing about it. It was hidden in the OS and so far I still haven't seen any online discussions about it at all (even among those who I sought for help with the custom XP installer configuration.

So /g/ have you heard this? That was really bizarre to me when I found out about it on my own. I think I just went on with my installation and forgot about it... but then as you can see I didn't really forget about it. So what the hell was that?
>>

That's when you clicked "don't send" to the error messages in winxp.

Are you saying that this linux can run on a computer without windows underneath it, at all ? As in, without a boot disk, without any drivers, and without any services ?

That sounds preposterous to me.

If it were true (and I doubt it), then companies would be selling computers without a windows. This clearly is not happening, so there must be some error in your calculations. I hope you realise that windows is more than just Office ? Its a whole system that runs the computer from start to finish, and that is a very difficult thing to acheive. A lot of people dont realise this.

Microsoft just spent $9 billion and many years to create Vista, so it does not sound reasonable that some new alternative could just snap into existence overnight like that. It would take billions of dollars and a massive effort to achieve. IBM tried, and spent a huge amount of money developing OS/2 but could never keep up with Windows. Apple tried to create their own system for years, but finally gave up recently and moved to Intel and Microsoft.

Its just not possible that a freeware like the Linux could be extended to the point where it runs the entire computer fron start to finish, without using some of the more critical parts of windows. Not possible.

I think you need to re-examine your assumptions.

but those were error message though

the thing I found in XP while configuring my installer said something about tracking shopping habits through web browsing or something like that, and I figured that must somehow tie in to the fact that IE is bundled. I would be cool because I actually UNINSTALL IE immediately after every Windows installation, however I vaguely recall there being mentioned something about tracking a user's actual Internet-related activities.

I remember being frozen for a good 5-10 minutes just staring at my screen then when I first saw it before I moved on

It's like saying the NSA has a backdoor in AES (which also has zero proof or logic). It's certainly possible that the government abuses its power to control society in evil ways. I can accept that. My point is that people need to learn to distinguish between hard facts, testimony, and speculation.

It's all very well that the illuminati are lizard people and that some people have seen them before, but where is public autopsy that demonstrates beyond all reasonable doubt regarding lizard people? There is none, it's only speculation. I apply this logic to conspiracy theory: unless you are witness, you are merely speculating.

Is it a good thing to hide evidence of an overreaching abuse of power? PRISM's legality doesn't change the fact that it is well within the realm of evil government activity.

It's true that China and US are allies and that there is the chance the Chinese will officially hand over Snowden. >if we told the american people we would be telling the terrorists too. then they would avoid computers/telephones
It wouldn't make a difference if the terrorists knew that we had this program. It (might) stop them from using the internet and other forms of communication for a little while, but after a couple of cases of people getting arrested, they'd probably just find another way to carry out their operations. This program doesn't even guarantee security, and it sacrifices our rights.

All of you cunts saying that rights don't matter and that you NEED TO FEEL SAFE WHATEVER THE COST, why don't you just move to North Korea? Seems like it would be your idea of paradise.

>it's not "whatever the cost" - it's reading your diary

I've never encountered anyone who cares so little about their rights. Next time they'll tell you that another program is necessary but you must sacrifice the first amendment, and you'll say "you just can't act like a dick, that's a good thing!!!" or the second amendment and you'll say "guns are for rednecks and criminals anyway" and you'll call anyone who realizes the consequences a "baby"

You're justifying tyranny. That's not some hyperbolic statement, you really are. You are the problem with this country.

>OMG TURRISTS

He just justified oppression of opposition politics through state intelligence. That’s as KGB as it gets.

1. thread about Assad/syria

3. thread about the racial composition of Greeks
4. thread about how orthodox Jews are good Jews
5. political test thread
6. thread on feminism/liberalism in video games

9. creationism/evolution
10. anti-obama thread

But seriously, you could do the same with /g/. I actually have gone to /int/ for a short stay and it's quite nice. /pol/ doesn't seem too bad, all the bad stories are probably overblown just like every other board.

>just a piece of paper
>just a piece of paper
The pen is mightier than the sword.

>how free do you think you will be if the economy collapses and martial law is imposed because of catastrophic events?!
The economy is collapsing because we've been funding endless war and pointless security measures like PRISM and spreading FUD in the media to scare people into giving up their rights. How do you not see that this is just a power grab? It's a method of control, the elimination of personal freedom ushers in a new authoritarian system, and even with a cursory glance at history we can see how "well" those kinds of countries do. Let me tell you something - people are always going to find ways to kill people. "Terrorists" will ALWAYS exist, no amount of security (besides absolute tyranny) will save you from them. Stop trying to justify this program, it is truly disgusting.

>>34680666
Now we're going to end up arguing about the democratic process. As it stands, privacy is a fundamental right. Nobody is stopping you from sharing your information, if you don't WANT to be private, you don't have to be! But if you choose to hide your furry porn collection, nobody can force you to embarrass yourself. What's wrong with that?

>The pen is mightier than the sword.

depends on the situation; even so, the constitution is not the be-all, end-all of the written word

>The economy is collapsing because we've been funding endless war and pointless security measures like PRISM

PRISM is cheap as fuck in the greater scheme of things.

the economy is collapsing for many reasons, including the behavior of the citizens themselves. you think the national debt is high? private debt is 3-4x higher

terrorists may always exist, but in the age of loose nukes we're quickly approaching a critical point. see einstein's quote on ww3/ww4

the govt is buying time, that is all. the endgame of all this is already well known

>As it stands, privacy is a fundamental right

right to life supercedes your right to privacy
