First they came for the pedophiles, and I said nothing, for I was not a pedophile.

MaxFreedom 386 points387 points 4 hours ago* [-]

It might be a good thing they started with 4chan. They'll probably put up more of a fight than any other internet group, which is pretty sad.

ButThePantsStayOn 55 points56 points 2 hours ago[-]

Yeah, I don't envy AT&T at this point. It takes some cajones to challenge 4chan like that. 4channers aren't known for playing nice.

Workaphobia 47 points48 points 2 hours ago[-]

On the other hand, I don't think DDOSing fucking AT&T is very feasible. It's like trying to shout very loud at the guy who can Force-choke you.

Mutiny32 76 points77 points 1 hour ago* [-]

Except when Anon works for AT&T.

It's like Fight Club. "We are everywhere. Do not fuck with us."

NoMoreNicksLeft 11 points12 points 1 hour ago[-]

I think they can get nastier than that. By this time Thursday, they'll have likely phoned in anonymous CPS tips on the people that work in that department.

ReverendDizzle 28 points29 points 2 hours ago* [-]

Yeah.

My dog hasn't walked right since he pissed off /b/.

Say what you want... but they're committed to their work.

imabouttovomit 15 points16 points 1 hour ago[-]

they shouldnt be censoring anything, even if it is 4chan - controlling what we can and cant see is not at their disposal to delegate

stainlessnixon 6 points7 points 1 hour ago[-]

Not really. Scientology is still going strong, what are they going to do, try to murder some handicapped people over it?

5h4m4n 76 points77 points 4 hours ago[-]

Jason_Lee 191 points192 points 1 hour ago[-]

okay, faggots, listen up.

there has been ONE good solution provided so far. if AT&T censors the internet, the internet censors them.

this is the way it used to work in the good ol' days, before there even was a WWW.

anyone in charge of a router, website, server, or anything at all connected to the internet, start blocking AT&T. When users call you to bitch, tell them that AT&T has decided to start censoring websites. Your users won't know the difference whether it's you or them, but they'll blame AT&T if you tell them to.

Forgive me for not posting instructions or netblocks, but anyone who actually does have this power already knows what to do.

godspeed, gentlemen.

kernelhappy 59 points60 points 1 hour ago[-]

That is a entirely childish and moronic idea. It just may work!

I like it, lets get cracking.

frozenzephyr 5 points6 points 45 minutes ago[-]

If you've been following what Anonymous has done, "childish" and "moronic" are very apt adjectives. And, in quite a few cases, "effective" also fits.

a28705bf 7 points8 points 1 hour ago[-]

wow. you thieving, unattributing, karma whore.

well played.

blhack 3 points4 points 28 minutes ago[-]

Althought this is a good idea, it is very unlikely that it will work. Those who run anything that could have any sort of real effect here likely are not "in charge" if their routing equipment any further than doing what their boss tells them to do with it.

I forsee very few people putting their jobs on the line for something like this. Yes it is infuriating, but what you are witnessing is why we will, in all probability, never see a revolution in present-day America. People are too happy with what they've got to risk losing it.

The17 30 points31 points 3 hours ago[-]

Out of the three main raid boards there was only 1 post about this and it had zero replies.

/b/ & /r9k/ are going to have to help themselves.

penguin673 69 points70 points 2 hours ago* [-]

AT&T pretty much handicapped them by removing a big portion of their users, so I wouldn't be surprise of the slow buildup. Hell, even moot doesn't seem to know that this is going on (I think he's at Comic-Con right now; smart of AT&T to strike when he's away).

ATTENTION: ALLOW ME HIJACK MY OWN POST. Here's a more permanent place for up-to-date info. Everyone who can't access img.4chan.org REPORT TO /x/.

THAT IS ALL.

EDIT 2: NVM, moot is aware now

EDIT 3: A special forum is being setup to help us organize here

enduro 12 points13 points 2 hours ago* [-]

It's mentioned on http://status.4chan.org/ now.

I don't go to /b/ very often but if this turns out to be censorship I will be canceling my AT&T service.

AlLnAtuRalX 12 points13 points 2 hours ago[-]

This post was made at about the same time... Odd

Anonymous 07/26/09(Sun)16:53 No.5163580 I'm glad they started the great firewall of the USA with 4chan, since we're the ones who will fight back the hardest.

_the_ 64 points65 points 4 hours ago* [-]

Actually all of the child pornography is on 12chan and there used to be some on 2ch

knight666 123 points124 points 4 hours ago[-]

That's not the point. They'll claim 4chan was blocked due to "pedophile rings" and that's all the general public will remember.

Sephr 117 points118 points 4 hours ago* [-]

If it's against 4chan's TOS AND the TOS is being enforced to the best of the mods' abilities, AT&T has no right to block them. If someone uploads CP to YouTube and it takes a few minutes to get removed, does that make YouTube a "pedophile ring" too?

Even if CP wasn't explicitly against the TOS, the only way AT&T should have the right to block them is if moderators or moot encouraged it.

My blog doesn't come with a TOS that says "you can't comment with illegal X, Y, or Z" but that doesn't mean I won't remove comments containing X, Y, or Z. If it's illegal it should be implied to be not allowed unless explicitly stated as allowed.

Edit: Grammar.

Pilebsa 27 points28 points 3 hours ago[-]

This is what happens when people don't hold politicians accountable for protecting AT&T and their illegal activities.

sn0re 25 points26 points 3 hours ago* [-]

The TOS isn't some magic "my website is unblockable" spell. AT&T has its own TOS with its users that hopefully outlines if and how they can filter content. If, despite the TOS and the best efforts of the mods, 4chan still has too much content that violates AT&T's TOS, then they can block the site.

Of course, someone will have to check AT&T's TOS to see if they're playing by their own rules, which they may not be.

unchow 4 points5 points 2 hours ago[-]

AT&T is a private company, and is allowed to dictate on their own what they will and will not provide to their customers. If the TOS they signed with their customers doesnt say "we'll provide access to every site on the internet," then there's nothing holding them back.

They are bound by the laws of capitalism, nothing more. They could provide access to an internet that only has three websites, and if they thought it was a viable business model, there are no laws that conflict with that.

Doing something that would adversely affect AT&T on the Internet would be quite impressive - they're a Tier 1 ISP. I'm not saying that it's not possible to do something, but considering that a majority of 4chan traffic goes through AT&T constantly, and only shows up as background noise to them, 4chan would have to step it up quite a bit.

officemonkey 77 points78 points 3 hours ago[-]

They wouldn't go after AT&T's ISP, they'd go after their wireless service and turn every single iPhone into a brick.

TheDeadMethod 8 points9 points 2 hours ago[-]

I certainly don't expect to wake up and find rubble where AT&T's headquarters once were, but anon did bring a fair amount of negative news attention and sensationalism to scientology. not to mention an unignorable quantity of masked, semiorganized school aged troublemakers and a fuck ton of prank pizza. bad press doesn't really mean anything for a bunch of crazy cult guys, but for AT&T damage to their brand image translates to lost money.

i wouldn't bank on freaking out, but i'd be surprised if they weren't watching, though perhaps not closely, for shit to go sideways.

remember what reddit helped do with that guy who's guitar was smashed by delta? bad press, from chuckling nerds or otherwise, gets a reaction.

I'm not saying this is the end of the internet, but it does seem the beginning of the end.

There's been an increasing trend to license, censor and monetize the web for some time, and I can't help but think it's accelerating. Unfortunately, when you have politicians, the police and media companies all on the same side against freedom. It's unlikely they'll lose.

mindbleach 15 points16 points 3 hours ago[-]

There will come a point where ad-hoc nodes will self-assemble into a network with 99.9% on-time packet delivery and quality-of-service comparable to modern broadband with slightly inflated ping. Once home wireless networks start communicating by default, traditional ISPs will have to kowtow to consumers to get their business.

bungeman 16 points17 points 2 hours ago[-]

I believe you, sir, have discovered the reason why unsecured wireless is so heavily frowned upon by the powers that be. If this ever becomes popular it will simply be made illegal to have any sort of pass-through open network. This will, of course, be sold as a means of cracking down on pedophiles.

Made it this time! Interesting note, AT&T is one of the upstream providers, and it seems this traceroute went through them (before being passed to cogent). So it would appear not ALL of AT&T is blocking - certainly not their transit routers (Tier 1 stuff), but perhaps their customer edge routers are.

I can also make it to 4chan.org from my U-verse box.

It's worth noting that this doesn't conclude for sure that it is AT&T - there could be some non-responsive hops that are dropping it, that may or may not produce ICMP TTL exceeded messages.

mogmog 29 points30 points 5 hours ago* [-]

That's not very readable - can you indent the traceroute section with 4 spaces?

Similar results from TX. I can access img.4chan.org using TOR, but without the proxy the connection is blocked.

ATTN: ATT, i have no interest in 4chan and until today had no Idea what 4chan was but the fact that you're censoring pisses me off.

Congrats you've lost another customer.

I cannot see this ending well for AT&T.

jsbarone 55 points56 points 4 hours ago[-]

I have UVerse and I just called AT&T. A Tier 2 Tech Rep ran a bunch of "tests" and he says it appears to be blocked. He's submitting a ticket to the Network Admin team and is going to call me back with a definitive answer. I didn't think the Net Neutrality War would begin so soon.

jsbarone 28 points29 points 2 hours ago[-]

Just got a call back from a Network Admin guy. He claims that img.4chan.org is in fact blacklisted by AT&T because AT&T and it's customers received a huge number of DDOS and other attacks from 4chan. He didn't know if this was a permanent ban or not. He recommended that I use a Proxy to connect to it.

He RECOMMENDED a proxy? Well.

fullphaser 26 points27 points 2 hours ago[-]

Depends on how quick AT&T is to undo their decision. Right now its some silly cooperate choice to look good in the eyes of the general public. But if they don't respond with I'll say 4 days time, /b/ will actually get bee's nest syndrome. The thing is right now, they aren't that angry and most of them probably think its a fluke. Now what happens when Comcast tries to follow suit [as I put money they will]. /b/ won't write letters to congress, they in fact won't follow any kind of standard procedure. They will scare the shit out of first the companies employees, and as they gather infomration, they will begin to actually target executives. It's at that point we will get to see if the company will put safety before morality. Once that has been done [within a likely 5 day span after the bee's nest has been stirred] Members within the anonymous cloud will take direction and begin to lead the swarm. AT&T's and Comcast web presence will be annihilated regardless of the cost to the individual /b/tards [as likely those two companies are hosting their websites using the same bandwith you and I us, and /b/ won't care, they tried ddos'ing blogspot] That is when you will start to see legally appropriate responses including protest.

Oh, and the "Random" imageboard at 4chan... Or... So I've heard...

NegatedVoid 26 points27 points 1 hour ago[-]

Okay. I finally got an answer. I talked to their Tier two and he escalated it and after much holding, he has a definitive answer.

AT&T has blackholed the IP addresses involved. Supposedly they've notified the related parties (A company called Net Asset whom he tells me i could reach at (559) 650 8111 if i felt the need). He wasn't able to find out definitively why they blackholed img.4chan.org but said it's most likely due to content.

mistercow 34 points35 points 4 hours ago* [-]

Generally, /b/tards are harmless because of their general disorganization. Their biggest weakness is that they cannot stay united against a specific target. Yet in spite of this, they've still gotten some stuff to happen.

So the last thing you want to do is make yourself a target against which all of /b/ will be willing to fight. I think AT&T has made a gigantic mistake.

Does this mean they should lose common carrier status? Telcoms have got no liability for illegal things being transmitted over their networks as long as they are completely neutral in serving it. Once they start filtering or censoring, they're responsible for filtering all the bad stuff out.

4chans' best plan isn't to attack AT&T, it's just far too big to mess with. The better tactic is to attach the personnel. Pick the top President and VP's and harass them like crazy.

Corporations protect themselves very well, they do not protect their employees from personal attack.

If 4chan divided up themselves with 1,000 people harassing per VP, they'd get the job done quick.

nonversation 14 points15 points 3 hours ago[-]

This is serious, sure it might be "just 4chan" to some, but this is an Isp in the united states actively blocking a website, without your knowledge or consent. If this is allowed, will we not end up like china???

Straight talk: Here's my analysis on where this is going, and how we got here:

You are going to say "don't censor the Internet". They are going to say "Your position supports child pornography, we're not going to support child pornography like you want us to." Essentially, their argument will be if you aren't for censorship, then you're for exploiting children. This is how the other side will justify the decision for keeping this site off the net.

Also, take note of how they are actually implementing the block: It's just, "timing out". Nothing to see here, move along (quite literally). Imagine if AT&T had posted a page with a police whistle and a hand saying "This site has been blocked because it has been deemed to contain illegal content." You would have every cable news channel splashing that up in a corner-box over the anchor's shoulder with "Net censorship in the USA, is it here to stay?" along the banner.

But alas, brilliantly on the part of AT&T, they are simply dropping the packets so it almost looks like a technical discrepancy. Nothing to show- nothing to visually latch on to, to get outraged over, nothing on their part to give tangible evidence of this shocking new practice.

I've always known Internet censorship would come to the public Internet in America, I just have been waiting for when. They've already come for the bandwidth by throttling, implementing bandwidth caps, knocking you offline for downloading copyrighted content, limit your account to not having web servers hosting outbound port 80, not using open SMTP port 25 relay but forcing their mail exchanges, re-routing your incorrect DNS entries to their own DNS spam suggestion search pages, and most ISPs have shut off access to newsgroups recently, and NOW... just NOW we have finally started to see outright cherry-picking website blocking.

My friends, this is absolutely no surprise as the slippery slope we've been down trotting for the last several years has brought us unsurprisingly, and almost expectantly, to the news we are hearing this evening.

And starting with a website they can claim is a "common and widely-known distribution hub for child pornography and other widespread illegal activities" is genius on their part so they can steer the conversation from is Internet censorship allowable and the focus on what they are doing, to why are you so obsessed with supporting child pornographers?

Anybody know anything about the legality of this? I've been trying to find info and all I can really come up with is the case where Verizon blocked Naral Pro-Choice from sending text messages to their supporters, which they then backed off with no legal proceedings. If it is legal it brings up some interesting issues, such as what about areas where ATT is the only provider? Does ATT have complete control over what these people have access to since there's no other option for them? I'm also curious if they've blocked it only for subscribers or if they've blocked it from their network entirely (ATT owns a lot of the infrastructure in the US). If they've blocked it from their network entirely that means ATT has an absurd amount of power over what information people in the US have access to.

masklinn 44 points45 points 5 hours ago* [-]

Anybody know anything about the legality of this?

It should be ok, thanks to the awesome free market of US economy and US broadband providers, you can trivially switch to another ISP!

I'd like to share my experiences with AT&T in Southern California, where I live.

Cox Communications has a monopoly on internet services in Orange County, so, having lived here most my life, I grew up with Cox as my provider. For my first year at university [zot zot zot!] I had on-campus housing that shared the university connection. Amazing speed, although torrent speeds were throttled I believe. There was no spying on our lines or any blocking of content afaik.

I moved out of on-campus housing for this last year and into my first apartment. Although Cox is the de facto internet provider, I am an adventurous lad and I was bothered by the monopoly they have so I decided to try out the competition - eventually settling on AT&T ADSL. Nothing I found other than Cox and AT&T DSL came marginally close as far as price / bandwidth goes.

We ordered 6 mbps, which they said was available in our area. We got the modem and tried to set it up, it took some time and I think they had to come out and fix something. Eventually it worked! Finally internet. It was not easy to go without as a college student and internet addict.

Then my roommate decided to run some speed tests. We had ordered 6 mbps down, we were receiving 1.5. We called tech support and they gave us the run around, eventually informing us that 6 was not actually available to us here. Funny, they had no problem charging us for it. Eventually we got our connection knocked up to 3 mbps somehow, and started paying for that. I don't know why this wasn't enabled in the first place. In retrospect we should have dropped the line and gone with cable at this point given the dishonesty or at least negligence of AT&T internet.

By comparison, people I know get twice as much or far more speed for the same cost on cable lines, even during peak hours.

One of the only positive things about AT&T is that Cox is known to send out cease and desist letters about downloading certain copyrighted stuff. I don't know if this is because AT&T is too small of a target here to get sent the notices, if AT&T is too lazy to take action on the notices, or if they are genuinely protecting their customers.

Now that they are blocking web sites I have another reason to leave them behind, and I soon will regardless.

tl;dr: AT&T ADSL can be difficult to set up, is slower than cable, and they are fucking liars. Confirmed that 4chan images are blocked here.

PickledGrannyClits 12 points13 points 4 hours ago[-]

Someone on AT&T who is being blocked: are they doing this by serving bad dns information? Try switching to OpenDNS or some other alternate DNS service to see if that fixes it (I got 207.126.64.181 and 207.126.64.182). I have noticed comcast and T-Mobile (through my data plan) doing odd stuff with dns information, which is why I am curious.
