Why are people paying $108 for Windows when I'm doing everything I need with an operating system that was completely free?
>>
because I didn't pay for windows and im not putting linux on my desktop

because your pissant needs don't come near my enterprise needs

1. Most people don't even know what GNU/Linux is or what an operating system is.

2. GNU/Linux has irrevocably failed in the desktop world. The only reason it works for us is because we've grown used to it. Becoming an arrogant condescending retard to Windows users and telling them that GUI is for hand-holding babies probably doesn't help either. A laptop running Windows is like a utensil, everything just works with little effort as well, you have your high quality Microsoft Office suite of applications and Outlook perfectly tailored for the business world. I dare you to try to tell a non-IT sector business to switch to mutt. They'd think you were fucking crazy.

Windows is cheap enough (when hidden in the price of the computer itself) and it works well enough for most people.

But if you're paying $108 to upgrade then yeah no, not worth it.

Also this. The fact that you got Gnome up and running on your Arch setup doesn't mean jack fucking shit at how capable GNU/Linux is as a desktop operating system. Normal people will stop right when they have to choose a distro. It's a hobbyist operating system who's only real-world application is in embedded devices and in servers

And don't fucking tell me about Ubuntu you half assed piece of shit. don't even try. Do you honestly think people are going to use that fucking pile of shit? Here's a video of a woman who got Ubuntu instead of Windows when she bought a Dell. Nobody knows what Ubuntu is

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2dQiXHf0CEE

That's like someone saying "I don't know how to play football" and you giving him a Nerf ball.
>>
I don't pay for Windows. The only times I've paid for it was for my laptops, but those aren't sold without, at least not without paying the license for it.
For my desktop I get one for free from my college.

And if you are working together with people who are using Windows or Mac it is better to use Windows, as Microsoft Word will shit it pants if you use Open/Libre Office.

Because proprietary software and the fact that opensource cannot compete with software available only for windows and OSX.

At best they're a pet project bu I need flash, photoshop, final cut pro, illustrator, and autocad. Free version of open source software cannot compete with them at all.

No it's more like sticking your baby into an Olympic swimming pool during a race and giving her floaties. Your mom is using a fucking hobby OS in a community of condescending kiddie faggots who think everyone should be as literate with a computer as they are. I hope she doesn't go around saying "I use Linux", because nerds will want to tap her ass thinking she's some kind of hobbyist

I like how she has trouble figuring out how to save a file, because lintards thought "look how different I am" by replacing the floppy drive with a hard disk. Should we get rid of folder icons too? Fucking idiots.

That's because you have the same vertical resolution of the obsolete 1024x768. Did you realize that? All you did was get 300 more pixels added.

Yes, everyone knows 1366x768 is terrible, and we can count enough to know they didn't change the second number.

Intuitive = being able to do things without giving much thought
Easy learning curve

That's not a bad thing at all and I don't see why you people try to be hardcore edgy faggots by telling me I should read a manpage for some cli program and memorize flags and arguments when I can use a frontend and do what I want in no time at all. Oh, and no I don't want to engage in a cli vs gui bawwfest, because it's as bad as gunfags with how retarded you act.
>>
>>31408318
What is this in response to in this thread? I legitimately believe GNU/Linux has failed as a desktop operating system for the most part and whatever little Ubuntu has done does not suddenly override that.
>>
>>31408432
MX518 = Shit mouse with autocorrection
Thinkpad = Old as fuck, now owned by chinks which completely invalidates any quality they used to have, their keyboard isn't unique by any means, and it's owned by chinks.
Model M = Loud as fuck, breaks your fingers typing it, practically useless
Gentoo = Difficult as fuck to install, basically another distro that needs extensive documentation to install because the developers are incapable of making something intuitive
>>
>>31408036
Neither does the creator of the Linux Kernel. It's only Richard Stallman that looks like a drug addict/dealer.
>>
Desktop Linux has a wide number of problems beyond just being an unintuitive, disorganized clusterfuck.

Hardware support has come a long way in ten years but it's still pretty inadequate when considering the requirements of a day-to-day desktop OS which Just Werks, without crashes or performance hits or limited features, with any given hardware you'd find in a consumer electronics store.

Then there's software support. Wine just doesn't cut it and there are plenty of common tasks performed by nontechnical users who rely on having access to some sort of software suite like AutoCAD, Solidworks, Photoshop, Sony Vegas or some other industry-standard tool which they need to get their job done.

There's also a serious lack of IT support. The 'community-based' support from IRC channels and forums just isn't going to cut it when Grandma's PC breaks down, or when Bob from accounting can't get logged in for some reason, and so on.
>>
I use my computer to play games, browse the web, listen to music and watch movies. When it comes to work all I need is a Word Processor and something to make slide presentations.

I was curious about Linux some time ago, but when I think about it there is absolutely no reason for me to make the change; Windows has everything I need and it's very easy to use.

So to answer OP's question, Linux may be free but it's not what everyone needs, simple as that.
>>
>>31408575
Nobody is associating the save button with the fucking floppy disk anymore, they just see it as the save button and this generation of kids are going to see it as the save button and it'll keep growing. Why the fuck should we change it to a hard disk when it doesn't matter either way. For the sake of consistency? That contradicts some of the other icons I'm seeing, like manila folders as 'open' buttons. There's no point in doing this other than being different for the sake of being different. This is their idea of innovation..

If I had to complain about Gentoo in a post like this I'd probably point to it being maintained by complete ricer morons who clearly have no fucking idea what they're doing, and the ports system being a broken, inconsistent fucking mess

But Anon-kun, I only paid $15. At that price, how could you NOT afford to give up your freedoms?

I'm going to guess that user got banned for "trolling" by the pseudo-intellectual retards who run the place as well. Lintards don't like criticism, theyd rather you fix it yourself before you resort to calling them out on something.

Hopefully windows 9 won't be for handhelds like 8 was clearly made for.

Hating Gentoo is now "anti-gentoo-trolling". This post dates from 2004, I'd like you to understand that even back then we had people calling others "trolls" because they disagreed with them.

>>
>>31409752
>Going HURR I MOCK U SO UR INVALID is as retarded as it gets

Fair enough.
That argument is still bullshit.
When you pirate something you obtain the result of somebody else's work without giving them proper retribution. How is that not entitlement?

I can understand the appeal of piracy perfectly; you get things with very little effort and without paying money for them, what I don't understand is why people try to justify pirating something, that is just plain retarded.
