Also, having your WiFi open is a horrible idea. Super easy to sniff traffic, which won't even be encrypted.
If you're using WPA2-PSK, then each client will have their own key per session. So even having the password for the WPA2-PSK as the SSID will be far more secure than just leaving it open.

In the US you have very few options, and usually only one is worthwhile. In my area Comcast is all thats offered, unless you count Verizon DSL (no FiOS)or dial up. DSL and dial up are not viable for an apartment with 3 college students (or anyone for that matter) living in it, so we naturally pick Comcast. I can't complain though, never had letters or been bothered by Comcast. My roommate is the owner of the account anyway so I can do whatever I want. Paying for 6 Mbps and get 38 Mbps, feelsgoodman.

I like the idea that the state/government owns and is responsible for the fiber infrastructure, and then ISPs are allowed to connect to those and server their customers. That way, you will always be able to get a lot of different ISPs, but all of them will be able to offer high speed connections, and the deciding factor will be price and maybe features (like for example some might allow you to stream TV and such).
I think it's a brilliant idea.

At any given time you can see clients with the MAC addresses of them in your router. Whether or not you log them is up to if you have that enabled/if your router firmware supports it. I'm sure advanced firmwares like Tomato/dd-wrt support MAC address logging.

Best thing to do is just make a MAC whitelist along with a strong wireless password. Faggy 13 year old scriptkiddies won't get past that.

From the research I did, If the lawsuit gets approved by a judge to proceed the company will try to use the threat of taking you to court to scare you into paying a settement fee of $1 to $2k. people who actually try to fight it in court face paying up upwards of $30-50k if they lose.

They were clearly phishing because the name on the letter was not mine so I blocked the number and that was that. I wish I'd saved it now.
>>
>>32365673
No, and hiding your SSID makes next to no difference, since it is quite often transmitted in plain text.
You just have to sit in range for a little while and capture packets and your SSID will be reviled.
8 digit password isn't that safe either (it's just the minimum requirements).

Anyway, you will be protected from 99.9% of all people who might want to get onto your network, but the same could be said even if you did broadcast your SSID.
>>
>>32365676

Only in america. In germany for example, feral lawyers make a fortune for sending out these letters and fines to scare people.

Most of them obviously torrented, but still, its a legal grey zone, especially the IP logging process.

ISPs in germany dont give a FUCK about their customers.
>>
>>32365673
Hidden SSIDs are actually less secure than visible SSIDs. Your computer will constantly send out requests for that connection, which can trigger a rogue acces point to spoof the name and you'll automatically connect to an unsecured hotspot.

Stop being paranoid.
Just running PWA2-PSK will be more than enough.

If you're super paranoid and want really high security, setup a RAIDUS server and then run WPA2-Enterprise. I would just use normal WPA2 though. Anyone who knows how to get into that will be able to sniff your SSID with ease as well.
>>

essentially your best bet is to hope it gets thrown out, a lot of times in a case targeting 600+ people over a wide geographic range, judges will throw the case out. They'll have to pick a specific state to hold the lawsuit trials and if its not your state you can say its unfair to try you because you have no way to get to the trial. Avoid the 100 most common passwords:

As long as you're using a good authentication system, like WPA2-PSK, dictionary words should be fine as long as it's not the password by itself, and has some uncommon complexity. This doesn't really work with older auth systems like NTLM that uses insecure hashing algorithms like DES and MD4.
