Can anybody give me their honest appraisal of the Nexus 4? I've asked this before but it was when Google Play was out of stock and /g/ collectively raged in response.
Cheers.

It's good. I ordered one yesterday after playing with an Optimus G (the exact same phone with different branding).

Very fast.
Order a case or that back glass will shatter/scratch like a motherfucker.

I've read some, they're incredibly bipolar. I tend to use this community for advice and offer my own back where I can.

It's got the best specs out there (minus display). It costs $350. Stock android. No SD slot (if you use SD, sucks)
>>
>>31405613
Thanks.
Do you have one yourself? Could you tell me anything specific you noticed using it? Nuances? Annoyances?
>>
I have it myself and I got to say, it is quite an amazing device. Feel sturdy, good sound, good developer communities. I have never experienced any form of heat issue or battery issue, most likely due to the fact that I am using a custom ROM and custom kernel. I get about 3 days of battery time depending on how much I use the device and that's pretty good alright.

I'd recommend getting a case though. While the back feels sturdy and all that, I'm always afraid of it breaking. I used it for about 2 weeks without the case and I didn't experience any form of scratches on the back or front, but better to be on the safe side.
>>
>>31405613
does it have a USB connector. Even if its a Micro/Mini. Couldnt you use an external SD card reader if you really needed to?
>>
>>31406141
Ultra bump - yes it does, that's what it uses to charge. If you really needed to, you could, people use microSD for music and movies and shit. Carrying around a reader defies portability.
>>
>>31407907
If you were on a long train/plane ride it wouldn't be hard to use said thing and that's when you'd really want a lot of storage for media.
>>
Got mine in the first batch.
Riddled with every build quality issue imaginable, so terrible I don't even use it any more,(or can't because the battery drains from 100% in less than 4 hours without the screen on) and I just use my old, old Acer Liquid Metal.
I just wish I had my Galaxy Nexus back ;_; (someone ran into me while I was holding it, flew straight into concrete)
>>
>>31406141

Yeah, it's a serious issue with the quality of parts used by LG, and is completely unacceptable, especially considering I have attempted to contact Google about a replacement or refund multiple times, and they refuse to take it back.

I don't have one, and I'm not getting one. I don't want a phone with a glass back, and i need 32GB of storage.

>>
>>31408480
just say that you have the earpiece buzz and another common problem and send it back. they probably don't even check it
>>
>>31408526
I think the problem is that the glass back is also cracked from the flash to the bottom corner (from when I dropped it from waist height onto my bed) so they think I damaged it myself, which caused the battery issue (it was doing this before the back cracked)
>>
Just got mine last week.
Only bad quality I see about the phone is there is no way to remove the battery.
Locked down kind of iPhone style. A bit strange for a google product if you ask me.
>>
Nexus 4 is a boss phone. Anyone who tells you otherwise is a faggot pleb. Had mine since 2 days after release.

-No screen issues (stock colors look great to me imo, but a lot of people claim it needs optimized. I've been toying with color/gamma optimization and getting worse results).
-Battery life is good, getting better now that I'm using franco's latest kernels. 4-6 hours of screen time through a normal day of usage is plentiful (16-24 hours total on battery).
-Only using OEM bumper for protection. Has worked flawlessly.
-I don't game on it, have PC and my N10 for that, so can't comment on downclocking/overheating.
-Space is no issue for me. Again, I have a PC and tablet for media. I stream music on my phone when needed. I still have 10 GB free on my phone.

What the hell else matters?
>>
>>31408605
You can remove the battery if you're not pleb tier. Why do you need to take it out? If it goes bad, open the phone and replace it. Need a bigger capacity? Get a portable charger (bigger and better solution). And if you qq about dropping it in water, that's your own damn fault.

Have you seen all the people with issues about the back? It honestly wouldn't surprise me in the least if he's true.

Because of the cheaper quality glass I wouldn't be surprised if it actually cracked when he sat on it or something.

Why would I even mention it if it wasn't true?

I got a Nexus 4 from the Google Play store a few days ago. Love it so far. Battery lasts me all day, 16 GB is plenty for me (still 11 GB free after loading it up with what I had on my previous phone), TMo in my area is great, build quality is excellent, no problems with display tinting or anything.

I just don't understand all the hate being directed at this phone. Fuck the fanboy children.

Screen is great. No tint as rumored. The glass fragility is overstated. Just don't drop it like a dumbass. No lag. Very smooth and fast. The only bad rumor I've found to be true is that the battery gets hot. Really hot if you are charging and using it simultaneously. However I read that Google will patch that on 4.2.2.

Still waiting for the orb. Haven't ordered yet, I'm gonna wait for the reviews to come out.

Your going to get KLP on day one.
Build quality is absolutely perfect, just holding the nexus 4 in your hand and it feels "right".
And the cherry on top of it all is the phone cost 299 for the base model. Which is a couple hundred dollars cheaper than any of its competitors.

>>31405387 (OP)
Didn't even read the thread.

Yes it gets quite warm, but far from that warm that you couldn't touch it. More like the outside of a cup of tea after a few minutes maybe. It's ok in my opinion.
I can not see a yellow tint at all. Honestly. Maybe they fixed that with later produced phones?
What else... Get a case for it.
Battery life: mine works about three days with non-excessive use and disabling wifi when not needed.

I think most people on /g/ rage because they just repeat because of what they read online. It's seriously a lot better than I expected after what people on /g/ were saying. I would have gotten a Lumia 920 if I had the money, but this is very nice as well. One thing this has which the Note 2 or the S3 doesn't have is the look, I love the look. Glass on front and back makes it just look valuable, it also feels valuable. Wouldn't want a iPhone 5 or S3 instead of this.
>>
>>31410155
We already discussed this, that guy earlier hada faulty one.
>>
>>31410155
You cant count "fragile" when comparing phones. Its stupid and if actually care about the things you purchase its a moot point anyway.

Stop throwing your phone when you get mad at people online.
>>
I have one, still running stock. Makes it through ~6h of intense usage or a full day of moderate usage. Very fast and smooth, never noticed any lag whatsoever. My only complaint is the lack of internal storage as I have a pretty large music collection and I'm not always within range of 3g/4g.
>>
>>31410189
Oh I forgot, I also have any networking disabled right now (no internet flat).
>>
So what ROM gives you the best battery life? Also what's the point of using a custom kernel?
>>
Just moved to using it fulltime a couple days ago.

It's fucking fast, smooth, screen is wonderful although I think there's a bit of ghosting on fast stuff like playing games. The loudspeaker sounds shittier than the one on my Note, but that's hardly a deal breaker.

Currently letting it settle with Faux kernel, although I'm not getting great battery life for the moment. Doesn't help that where I work is like a fucking fortress against cell signal.

Probably gonna hop on Franco's kernel if thinks don't settle to an appropriate level.
>>
>>31409528
Storage, even for flash media, is physically measured in decimal (MB, GB), but represented in binary by software (MiB, GiB). 16 GB is really 14.9 GiB. Confusingly, most user-facing interfaces do not use the correct units out of tradition.

The user data partition on my 16 GB Nexus 4 is 14.13 GB = 13.15 GiB, 12.92 GiB formatted. So you're losing about 2 GiB to system partitions and formatting, but if you root the phone, you can reclaim about 840 MiB in unused space from the system and cache partitions. But really, if you're that hard up for storage, I would suggest getting a phone with an SD card slot.
>>
Something that a lot of people forget is that the Nexus 4 has NFC. Get some tags and you can really streamline your power savings.
>>
>>31411119
>Get some tags and you can really streamline your power savings.
What?
>>
I have one and I love it. It's fast, no shitty overlay, timely updates will come from google as soon as they are out, no physical buttons (i don't like them at all). I don't have many problems with the display, and in terms of colour I actually prefer it to the samoled on my old phone. It's sharp, responsive, and those little curved edges at the side feel nice. Battery life isn't the greatest, regular use brings me to about 20-30% at the end of the day. WiFi speeds are ridiculously slow. Downloading a 10mb app takes 5 times longer than it did on my old phone. Limited space kind of sucks. I have 3 free gigs (out of 16 total) after putting some music on. Camera isn't the best but i don't take many pictures so I can't really complain.
>>
>>31410437
>So what ROM gives you the best battery life?

You'd want to look more into kernels for battery life

>Also what's the point of using a custom kernel?

Better performance, more customization options (gamma/over or underclocking/undervolting/etc.) and better battery life to name a few.
>>
>>31411328
Well than, what's the best kernel for battery life?
>>
>>31411590

I like faux's kernel the best though ymmv when it comes to kernels. Some work better for others, like how some people swear by franco's kernel whereas its a piece of shit to others.
>>
>>31411654
The only piece of shit is Franco himself
>>
>>31411753

How so?
>>
So I would be trying out new Kernels and ROMs at the moment, but rather than turning on, when my N4 is plugged into power, it just sits there with a red LED.
After a while the LED goes out, but it still doesn't turn on.
If I unplug it it still doesn't turn on, and if I plug it back in, the LED comes back on.

What new phone should I get /g/?
>>
>>31411788

Remove the back, remove the battery. Let it sit for a couple minutes, reconnect the battery. It should boot.

It's an excellent phone. Quality is good, it's light and thin and all that bullshit, the screen is gorgeous, the SoC is ridiculously fast and Android is brilliant with 2GB of RAM. Throttling appears to have been resolved in newer hardware revisions, as well. And of course there's the price: at US$300 unlocked it's absolutely untouchable.

That said, there are drawbacks. There's no LTE in 99.99% of markets, of course, and the aforementioned gorgeous screen and fast SoC conspire to eat through your battery like an American at a hamburger buffet.

It's a fantastic phone but if you're going to be using it really hard and can't charge throughout the day you could be in some manner of shit.

Pic related: dreadful battery life.

I can get about 4-5 hours of on-screen time, depending on brightness (I just leave it on auto usually) and exactly what I'm doing. That's not much worse than what I had with my Potato 900, but it's still not as good as I got way back when on my iPhone 3G when it was new, or even quite what I saw on my Captivate (OG Galaxy S) after that. These huge, high-res IPS/SAMOLED+ displays are hard on battery, I guess.

Running stock 4.2.1, rooted with motley kernel and slight UV. Sadly I got a "nominal" CPU and any more than 25-50mv of UV on most steps results in freezes.

>>
Why are peoples opinions on this phone so fucking mixed? It's like you either love or absolutely hate it. I don't know who to believe because I'm sure some are over exaggerating.
>>
>>31412772

The only thing you should believe is your heart
>>
I've got one and I love it. Out of all the smart phones I've owned this one is the best. The storage space is lame, but I've been streaming all my music from Google Music since I have an unlimited data plan so I don't have to worry much. The battery isn't too bad using Franco's kernel. I can get 5 hours of screen time easily.
>>
>>31412772
I'd reckon there are a few groups:
1. Those who actually own a Nexus 4. These people will generally love it.
2. Those who bought a GNex/GS3/iShit right before the N4 came out or when it was out of stock and are pissy about their poor luck/choices. These people are the ones you'll hear repeating nonsense about yellow tint and cracked glass, mostly to make themselves feel better about paying $600 for PenTile and dual-core S4.
3. iDiots/trolls pretending to be same, who will spread FUD and generally shit on ANY major Android/WinPhone device.
4. Paid shills, who will like/hate it depend on who signs their paychecks.
>>
>>31412772
If you've been reading my posts, then I would like to clarify.
I want to love this phone, and I did, when I got it.
But it has a lot of issues, issues that have been reported to be individually fairly common in the first few batches of phones, and I was unlucky enough to get all of them in mine.
From what I can tell, they've pretty much been all addressed and resolved, and it is still a great phone.
They only downsides are the obvious ones, like SD cards and no easily removable battery, that everyone should be aware of.

I'm considering just replacing my completely screwed one with just another one, because there really is nothing close to it at the price range.

Or I will just continue using my shitty old Acer until the next iteration comes out. I just hope it's not LG.
>>
>>31412675
>From a root terminal (or adb):
>dmesg | grep PVS
What does it actually do? Can I do this on GS3? Been undervolting then doing stress tests on SetCPU
>>
Pros:

>great build quality
>good screen
>stock android

cons:

>no expandable memory

Battery life is pretty middling. Better if you install a custom kernel though. Also I live in Canada so I can get LTE.

Overall it's an excellent phone, especially at that price. Would have been the absolute best on the market if they had just included a fucking SD card slot. You can't even use USB OTG.
>>
>>31413036
Oh and it's lightning fast too. Even slightly smoother than iPhone 5.
>>
>>31413006
If you need to be told what "dmesg | grep [something]" does you probably don't belong on /g/, but every day's a school day so here you go:

"dmesg" displays the kernel event log, i.e. what various system drivers and devices are doing. "grep" is, of course, the Unix command for regular expression matching in plain-text blocks. So "dmesg | grep PVS" searches the kernel even log for the string "PVS" and displays only the lines on which that text appears.

As for whether or not this would work on the GS3: probably not. "PVS" is part of the string Qualcomm uses to delineate the specific binning of CPU present in the device; the standard GS3 uses a Samsung Exynos CPU. It MAY be present on US GS3s, though, since they use Qualcomm's MSM8960.

Yeah. Early units had some thermal throttling issues, whereas mine (bought in the latest wave after they became available on the Play Store again) never throttles even after prolonged benchmarking. I also don't have any weird screen tint issues - it's a little yellow-ish, but it's clearly just a calibration issue (or maybe just the fact I'm used to AMOLEDs), not the heat-related "splotches" some people reported on early phones.
