tfw you realize that William Gates did more for humanity than RMS ever will do in all his lifetime.
I rather have propetary software with no freedome, but those who win millions donating them dollars to people who are in need, rather than companies which make 0.001% of what Microsoft does but gives me
>muh freedums

Yeah no.

No, Bill is just a special kind of evil.
First he rules the business world with an iron fist and becomes the richest man ever, and then he feeds black people just enough so that they reproduce (like tribbles) but not enough so they're not starving and in horrible suffering their entire lives.
He actually wanted to increase the population of africa so there would be more starving children.
>>
>>31267276
William gave so much of his wealth he actually descended from richest man in the world, to 2nd.
I'd like to see you do that.
>>
Bill Gates is a wonderful person, but you cant guarantee every guy earning millions from Microsoft after him will be wonderful people too.

Anyway, just use what you want to use for your needs. Politics should be put aside.
>>
>>31267277
>I'd like to see you "helping yourself" in the middle of Nigeria.
Dude. Millions of years ago africa was the cradle of the world.
They pretty much all left that shithole and eventually became Americans.

Nigerians should do it again.
Just leave that shithole.
>>

OP here, and I agree.

Ah this excuse: Protip: The starvation started when the white farmers left.
Apart from the oil and diamonds, and the land that they could farm but don't, they really don't have much in terms of natural resources.

>Gates did more for humanity than RMS ever will do in all his lifetime
He gave his money away to impoverished people, woopdie fucking donkey tits. It'll likely only last them, at most, a few years or a decade. Meanwhile, the idea of free software is going to continue to benefit mankind in terms of freedom of choice and speech for as long as software exists.
>>
>>31267296
That is quite true
>>
>>31267345
Hey if they're dying of diseases, that's too fast. Starvation is much slower and torturous. All those lives that he saved he saved so he could watch them starve to death instead, since the more people alive, the less food they eat.
>>
>>31267295
Big deal, it's not like he'd ever be able to spend the money he has in the first place. The fact that he ever accrued that much wealth to begin with only shows how flawed the modern capitalist system of the US is.
>>

Africa has all the resources it needs.

They wanted independence, but neglected to consider the fact that they would have to fight the world market to sell their goods. The africans bluntly assumed that it was business as usual and refused to develop and adapt their goods only to get outmaneuvered.

After WW2 it was assumed Africa would quickly develop to be on par with western Europe while eastern Asia would degenerate into barbarism.

Proprietary software is modern day slavery. In hundreds of years people will look back, hipsters will be wearing 'sorry for enslaving you with proprietary software' t-shirts and using non-free code as penance.

You have to be trolling, because I refuse to believe that you are this ignorant.
Proprietary software is modern day capitalism.

Your analogy is flawed. A better analogy is when you cut down a tree with a chainsaw, do you want to do it without the schematics of the circuitry of the chainsaw?
In which I answer, fuck yes. I don't want the schematics, give me the chainsaw so I can cut down the goddamn tree
>>
>>31267626
I find it funny that hippies want organic food and stuff like that.
Organic food is much less land efficient and cost efficient than regular food. Nice first world problems to have when your food is too cheap, right? Fucking hippies. They actively support the slow, torturous deaths of millions. Sure, abandon your high efficiency farms to grow wholefood! That'll solve world hunger.

It would be more accurate to say that it allows you to make as much money as you're prepared to earn.

Of course there hasn't been a capitalist economy in the West for a hundred years so the point is moot.
>>

You are allowed to repair or modify windows.
Within a limited field, and I know it's not completely ethic and that's where Microsoft fails, but hey, most users don't even know how to repair their computers.
I wouldn't buy a car that's "open source" because I wouldn't know how to modify it.
If I crash, I call my car vendor and ask them to repair it.

It's not semantics - to say that system X allows someone as much money as they _want_ is wrong.

To say that the markets of the west are not capitalist is not a matter of opinion but one of fact. Governments involving themselves with private companies (as something other than a client) lose the right to call themselves capitalist with a straight face.

What's important is that you're able to. I'm a programmer and I use free software, doesn't mean I go into every single program I install to modify it. I hardly ever do actually, because everything works the way I want it to out of the box. But I know that other people will, and I benefit from their work when they do. And if I ever need to do it myself I can. Free software (don't really care about open source) is about being allowed, you and anybody, to modify your tools, not necessarily doing it. Even as an user you benefit from it.

Ooohh so that's your point?
You see, that's where your logic is flawed
right here look:
>hte people aren't knowledgeable
Is it MS fault for not letting the whole market know of their competition?
Is Mercedes Benz gonna argue with you if you buy their cars?
Is Volkswagen gonna give you a panflet with a list of competitors?
No, it's a capitalist society moron, that means "every man for himself", or "every company for itself"
If the consumer doesn't even make an effort to learn about the competition and alternatives, it's not really MS's fault, is it?

People are free to chose between free software and MS Windows, yet they don't make an effort to read about shit.
That's because they don't care.
Why they don't care, you might ask?
Cause MAYBE, JUST MAYBE, MS Windows gives them the tools they need, and they care not for
>muh freedums

They would, just not enough to warrant the expense of doing it.
>>
>>31267541
>you do realize that if 'Murica spent like, half their military bugdet on feeding the poor, world hunger would be solved?

So if america sent even more money to feed starving africans too stupid to farm for themselves it would allow them to live long enough to reproduce even faster and create an even more populous starving continent for years until it would consumer more than the gdp of the usa to feed?

you do realize this is like feeding stray cats right? "its so they arent hungry" logic that got them into that situation in the first place

donations are the problem not the solution, and do indeed bankrupt poor farmers.

Giving direct aid to anyone harms them in the long run because they become dependent on it.

Keep the direct aid for natural disasters and suchlike. In the meantime teach them how to farm and learn.

>Proprietary software is modern day capitalism.

Proprietary software developers take advantage of a monopoly gained through the government-granted systems of copyright and patents. That's a model inherently opposed to laissez-faire capitalism (not that copyright and patents are intrinsically a bad thing.)

If you examine how free software utilises copyright, you'll find that it's much more in line with the free market ideology.

That's not a correct analogy
You see, propietary software's main feature is it's productiviy and stability for the AVERAGE user, that means that they find no inconveniences while using it, AS LONG as they make a minimum effort to learn how to use the tool.
In your analogy, the tool is fucking useless.

>But the LA Times investigation reveals the Gates Foundation’s humanitarian concerns are not reflected in how it invests its money. In the Niger Delta — where the Foundation funds programs to fight polio and measles–the Foundation has also invested more than $400 million dollars in companies including Royal Dutch Shell, Exxon Mobil Corp, and Chevron. These oil firms have been responsible for much of the pollution many blame for respiratory problems and other afflictions among the local population.

>Overall, the LA Times says nearly $9 billion in Gates Foundation money is tied up in companies whose practices run counter to the foundation’s charitable goals and social mission. And that number may be understated–the Gates Foundation has not provided details on more than four billion dollars in investments it says are loans.

General-purpose patents are a bad thing.

With copyrights it's a matter of length and proper distinction between consumers and publishers as well as between commercial and noncommercial work.

Early copyright actually placed restrictions on the publisher to preserve the rights of the author. Of course those laws would be deprecated in a world with zero-effort redistribution but they'd be a hell of a lot less harmful that current copyright law.

I don't know what are you referring to. I downloaded my hex fixer for enabling 24/7 functionality some guy did, so I haven't to think about it and compile every time, thus saving the individual's majory endless time giving them a perfect tool.

>FREE: engineer makes software
PROP: engineer makes software
>FREE: gives people the right to use and modify, thus making people work on his project and he can be a lazy cunt
PROP: gots paid for making the software, so he didn't give a fuck about the sellings
>FREE: nobody gives a shit about improving that shit nobody uses, till a genious promise comes with a new feature and adds it because he is learning.
PROP: everybody agrees of the program being useful, so many of cracker crews compete for doing the best reverse engineering and release it free for everybody
>FREE: creator works for a propietary software maker because he must eat. Program gots deprecated and the work got lost with this. Grow his beard and buys the stallmanite pack.
PROP: crackers still got cracking in a interesting cat and mice work and gives a free alternative to anybody able to use and find his program, so users can learn how to USE the objectively better programs properly with freedom.

What would be GIMP without a photoshop for copying? What is the interest of cloning windows dlls from 0 in wine?

It's not "cherry picking" to point out what you said is not true. Whether a piece of software is proprietary or not doesn't give you indications of its value for productivity or stability.
