My Linux systems aren't even configured for sleep or hibernate, have no swap, and I did powercfg -h off on Windows too.

Hibernating with an SSD is not even faster than booting.
And sleeping introduces all kinds of bullshit bugs with WiFi, Bluetooth, WWAN, etc. hardware entering unkown states, on both Windows and Linux.
>>
Which one wears your components less anyway?
>>
>>31194567
sleep or always on
>>
>>31194492
I still hibernate my laptop with a SSD just because its really nice to pick up exactly where I left off. Sure I could use sleep but using up 10% of the battery every night for that seems pointless.

And before you complain about SSD wear its really a non-issue. With a 256GB SSD that is only half full and one hibernate taking up 80+% of my daily writes getting a decade of life out of it should not be an a problem.
>>
Hibernate
What, you plebs are still using HDDs? Oh lawd...
>>
>>31194567
Keeping it on all the time. ICs wear more from temperature changes than from operating normally and (desktop) HDDs wear more from spinning up and down than from running.
If you do not keep it on, there is little difference between S3/S4/S5.
>>
>>31194492
>Hibernating with an SSD is not even faster than booting.
There are multiple ultrabooks with sub-2 second startups from hibernate. You're fucking high.
>>
>>31194650
From hibernate? Are you sure? My X230 takes longer to resume from sleep and become usable.
>>

These use propietary hibernating solutions like Intel RapidStart and not standard hibernate as defined by the ACPI S4 state.

It is not about being a freetard.
The OP didn't specify a platform. And these implementations are not available on other platforms like AMD motherboards, even if you use 100% propietary software.

I thought that was a funny joke until I found it won't even detect new hardware when booting up.

[✔] Sleep mode (most of the time)

I messed up somewhere in my openbox config (crunchbang), so I have to go through all this every time I start up my computer if I want my desktop how I like it:

>change wallpaper
it won't remember the one I've set it to last session for some reason.
>restart tint2 manually
it works fine when it's restarted.. but it won't appear automatically on start up
>open 4 terminals - irssi, screenfetch, rtorrent, and ranger
>connect to irc.rizon.net with irssi
>join #/g/technology with irssi once it has connected to rizon
>find the magnet links for torrents that didn't finish last session, and paste them into rtorrent
>open iceweasel
>arrange and resize my windows

.. I can't be bothered to do that every time.. and yes.. ranger and screenfetch are really just rice.. but my desktop seems bare without them..
>>
>>31194898
Thanks, I never thought to check the power options on my desktop.
>>
>>31194898
Why didn't they call it hybernation. though? That's exactly what it is.
>>
>>31194980
Well its not exactly hibernate as hibernate implies saving a lot more things than hybrid boot does.
>>
>>31195035
They copy whatever's on RAM to disk, then power off. How is it any different?
>>
>>31195192
When you hibernate all your shit is right where you left it when you boot back up.
Hybrid boot basically logs the user off and closes all applications before hibernating.

So yes, as far as system services, drivers and the kernel is concerned they are the same but the user experience is not even close.

Where on earth do you live?
Do you even have weather?
>>
>>31196078
I have a 28-hr uac for my server rack and a generator for my house. I lose power on average of 86 times per year.
>>
Super+L

Then it decides on its own, if I'm going to be back soon or not.
>>
>>31196109
What if you aren't around when power fails and can't get back to start the generator before the UAC dies?
What if the generator runs out of fuel?
>>
>>31196078
I probably only lose power once a year and Colorado gets plenty of weather.

Besides, this isn't the days of FAT32 anymore. Power outage just means I have to turn on my computer again and have never had any problems because of one.
>>
>>31196202
Generator is a 6kw propane on an autostart circuit that I've setup to email me and ask if I want to start the generator if my power goes out.
