Please explain how being in dept (especially if you can't pay it back) isn't a bad thing.
Besides, you often end up paying far more if you spread the payments out than if you pay for it all straight up.

If you have good credit and pay it off every month, then credit cards are a fantastic deal for buying most everything with. A good credit card will give you purchase protection, warranty extension, let you arbitrate purchases, and give you cash back. Also, you get a nice list of the money you're spending that you can import right into your app of choice.

Also myFICO forums have a lot of good info on building up credit. The whole thing is a scam designed to sell their credit reports, but until Saint Elizabeth single handedly reforms the consumer finance system, playing along is the best way to get favorable terms on any future loans.

The only way you can get denied for a secured card is if they think you have outstanding liens. Get your credit report, and call the companies who've reported you to either settle up or challenge them. This can include things like unpaid utliity bills, taxes and rent, not just bank loans.

"Usually big banks" is not the name of a product. I second the other guy's recommendation to get your actual credit report (not the shitty free one), and look into a secured card. The whole point of a secured card is they can't lose money even if you flee the country. There shouldn't be any reason to deny you one short of circumstances you'd already be aware of (beyond basic negligence/ignorance, which seems to be your issue).

>>32138506
actually yes you have. being in debt is owing money to someone else, just because you have the resources to pay that debt in a timely manner does not make the debt not exist. also that's not exactly a wise usage of your money.
>>
>>32138499

You're confusing the controlled use of debt with the colloquial "getting into debt" which makes it sound like all forms of debt involve getting evicted from your home because you spent all your money on toys. This is the same thinking that holds credit cards as being dangerous because some people get into trouble with them. By that logic, we should just ban alcohol too.

Buying a $400 mobile phone on a $30 no contract monthly plan (which is what most N4 users are doing) is a much smarter choice than getting a "cheaper" phone that comes with a mandatory $90/month data plan. Even with interest payments, which I don't normally condone, op made a better choice than getting a contract phone.

I always knew that if I ever got a credit card, which I plan on getting two - one for business and the other for home-use - I would make sure that anything I would buy I would already be able to pay for the next month. Why you ask? Because credit cards aren't about invisible money, or loans at all for that matter. They are solely for building credit, that which you can use to buy lifelong things with, such as a house.

I am just going to help you a bit by posting the definition of debt taken from different dictionaries.

>debt [det] noun
>Something that is owed or that one is bound to pay to or perform for another
>An amount of money borrowed by one party from another.
>An amount owed to a person or organization for funds borrowed.
>Something owed, such as money, goods, or services.

Just because you can pay back does not mean you aren't in debt. If I load 5 bucks from someone, then I have a debt of 5 dollars to that person, no matter if I have thousands of dollars in the bank.
>>
>>32138662
http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/business/buy-rent-calculator.html?_r=0

Simple. If you move a lot, rent. If you tend to stay in one place, mortgage and buy to get a house for collateral.

Yes I think alcohol should be banned, so that's a bad example.

I am not saying that credit cards are horrible and nobody should use it, but OP seems to be one of those people who shouldn't have one.
Also, like I said before I don't want to be in debt if I don't have to. So if I have to pick between getting a phone today and then be in debt for 1 year, or wait a few weeks/months and then get it without going in debt, then I pick the latter. Why? Because something might happen which will either reduce the amount of money I get, or increase my expenditures. If I then have debt, then I might not have enough money to pay that, and the debt will increase.
That's how a lot of people end up with huge debts. I often watch this program called "Lyxfällan" which is a Swedish show about two experts going around and helping people with huge debts. Almost every single one of them have, and happily uses a ton of credit cards. It's really interesting to watch how and why people end up in debt. It's often their own faults, but sometimes it is because of things which could happen anybody.
You should be very careful about how much debt you get.

Stopped reading right there. Have fun with your delusional ideas about reality

>debt in the modern day means "owning more money than you can pay back"
No it doesn't... I have already posted several definitions of what debt is if you're interested.
>>
>>32138817
Where the hell do you live? I live in a 1600 sqf house with a detached 6 car garage/shop and attached two car. Mortgage was $150k

Rental space like this would be out the damn roof in terms of pricing.
>>
>>32138804
>Yes I think alcohol should be banned, so that's a bad example.
Seriously? Are a fascist or something? Do you want to take away our guns next?
>>
>>32138845
Well OK I don't think it should be banned since it's already legal, and banning it would just create a black market and be unpractical.
I think the better word would be "I think it would have been best if it had been banned several hundreds of years ago, and people had accepted that". The same goes for cigarets, and all harmful drugs.

>Do you want to take away our guns next?
I live in Sweden where barely anyone owns a gun, except people who use them for hunting.
In the US, it's the same deal as with alcohol though. I would be very happy if it had been banned a long time ago and people had accepted it.
Outright banning it now is not a good move though.
>>
>>32138894
We tried banning alcohol once and we all saw how that went down.

I'm for making everything legal and just taxing the shit out of anything with lots of negative externalities
>>
>>32138980
>I'm for making everything legal
Sounds good.
>and just taxing the shit out of anything with lots of negative externalities
But taxation is extortion. I'll just refuse to pay my taxes, since that's legal now.
>>
>>32138941
I'm on the opposite side of the spectrum, where I believe that if you legalize everything, use will peak, then eventually it will slowly go down all around. And people will practice in a safer way too.
>>
>>32138781
Well hello there, Sebastian.

Yeaahhhhh. Good luck with that.

I just got a bank credit card with a $500 line and a amazon store card with a $400 line.. which is pointless because the 600$ and having a year to pay it off is what I wanted ;_;

Um no that would be the opposite of freedom, silly European.

Just because dumb people don't know how to use it doesn't mean it should go away, you like gnu/linux yes?

I for one enjoy my credit card, building credit on things I would normally just pay cash with. I get my product or service AND I get credit for it.

Before the banks caught on, people were doing that with those 'convenience' checks the CC companies sent out:
>Write check for most of credit limit to self
>Deposit in bank
>Pay off CC bill for check immediately
>Pocket cash back.
>Repeat until they stop sending them to you

>tfw 4.2.2
>>
>>32139746
The difference is this method still works and won't likely be abused much since you need to buy massive amounts of cash to get any sort of decent return.
>>
>>32139860
I know this feel. It's a bretty damn nice feel.
>>
>>32139869

Nah. Those checks generally now have a 2% or so 'convenience fee' tacked on to them specifically to prevent this technique.
>>
>>32139961

people who are responsible with their credit cards are doing pretty good right now.... My parents have had a credit card for a very long time and they make it a point to completely pay it off every month..
my dad tells me their credit rating is so good, they could buy a house with their credit card
