can write my own newsletter and distribute them on the street, and
maybe a few people would read it, but it is no way comparable to the
highly established media channels who have enormous influence. the
reason no alternative viewpoint can ever be published in the mainstream
american media is that it is all corporate owned and funded by
advertising from major corporations. i'm not saying that there is
direct pressure on journalists not to say things (although that
certainly does occur, it's not the most significant factor). what
causes it is an entire system that has evolved to select only those
journalists who's views are non-controvercial (to established
interests).
everything outside the mainstream press can be
considered insignificant because 99% of people will never see it, or
even be aware of it's existence, and if our goal is to have an informed
populus, we have failed. (of course if our goal is just to make money,
we are doing very well, but in that case you shouldn't care about
criticisms about bias and self censorship in the press)
this is
all old, well established stuff that has been covered a million times
by other people. the classic text on the topic is "Manufacturing
Consent" by Hermann and Chomsky |
