You should sample shows from different genres to find out what suits you. These days I mostly watch slice-of-life and high school bullshit, but when I was in my early teens I enjoyed stuff like Elfen Lied.

Black Lagoon is a nice anime to start with. Guns n' explosions n' boats.
Death Note too, everyone's seen it, so should you.
Lucky Star is a must-have. Slice-of-life comedy, with some references you'll get when you re-watch it after going through all your other weeaboo animations.
Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann too, it's epic the same way Black Lagoon is, with a different setting.
    Code Geass too.
Neon Genesis Evangelion is another clusterfuck of mechs, and the angsty GOTH KIDDIE in the back of the class thinks it's DEEP and the best show ever made. Still worth watching.
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is also nice. You might not want to watch the second season unless you became a super devoted fan of the first one.
K-On! is moeblob anime, made to make you :3 like fuck. Watch it and understand why /g/ likes the AKG K 701s so much.
Toradora! is a cute anime about sweet tsundere love. Watch it.
    Also, Spice and Wolf.
That oughtta last you for some time.

From a technological perspective, you'll need a player that can handle subtitles and the usual codecs for anime,in HD/HQ.

For windows, this is most likely MediaPlayerClassic Home Cinema. It has many "built in" codecs, and Windows 7 should have the rest of the commonly used ones

For Linux, you want Mplayer. You'll also want all the codecs in your repository. Make sure you at least have Xvid/DivX, ogg container types, matroska container types, mp3, aac etc...

For anything that you're finding difficult to play, you will want to try VLC (videolanclient). It doesn't look as good as the above, but is available for both win and linux and can play some wacky, arcane forms that you may not have the codecs for.
    >> Anonymous 10/10/09(Sat)14:11 No.6184656
I'll tell it to you straight, OP. The vast majority of anime is shit. Just like the vast majority of western cartoons/movies/music.

The problem is that weeaboos elevate it to something that it isn't. In Japan, anime isn't really all that popular with anyone beyond 12-14 years old. Manga is more widely accepted, but not by a whole lot.

Thus, most anime is really meant for a younger audience in Japan than what it generally gets overseas. And most of it is shit by adult standards.

    THIS

The biggest exception is One Piece. Pirates, basically. In ten days it will have been on the air for a decade. By manga and anime standards, it is HUGE.

There's 420 episodes now, and since it's so old, some people find it hard to get into, but it is worth it. I wasn't really hooked until the Arlong arc. That's around episodes 30-45. Up until then, I was getting into it but probably not enough to watch all 100+ episodes I had already downloaded. 30-something came around and I was like "holy shit". By the end of the Arlong fight, I was bawling like a baby and was hooked hardcore.

Don't go out of order, though. One Piece is one of the few animes that actually has a decent story. The character development is top-notch, too. Most of the main characters have some sort of tragic history to them and it's much better to have that revealed to you as the show progresses than to accidentally spoil it.

Everything else mentioned here is highly overrated. Don't waste your time unless you become obsessed with Japanese cartoons.

*Do yourself a huge favor and skip episode 6 entirely. There are two versions: a censored version and the DVD version. Both will make you want to stab your eyes out. It's a generic and poorly executed hot springs episode, which is totally out of place in this genre. There is no nudity to speak of other than the male kind. It adds nothing to the plot and the censored version is edited so badly that you won't know what the hell is going on. If you do waste your time with it, you will rage. Don't do it. If you must, keep your finger on the "skip 10 seconds" button so you can get the gist of it and get it over with.

    Lord, I wish I hadn't.

Useless plot circles that do nothing but convolute the series' universe, dragging it out until maximum profit could be hemorrhaged. I'll give them props for developing so many characters so well, but dragging it out that long?

Inuyasha, like Bleach and many other such lengthy series, was good for the first 12-24 episodes.

I'm going to be called a bunch of names and instantly hated for this - ah the beauty of being anonymous.

Naruto is worth a watch. There. I said it. It's long, It's mostly kiddie, but the friendship themes and fun story archs make it worth watching. That being said if watching from the beginning make sure you skip the I think 60+ episodes of bloat/filler at the end and start on shippuden right away where the story will actually continue.

    It's feels good man.

Clannad's story revolves around Tomoya Okazaki, a third year high school student who dislikes his life. Tomoya's mother (Atsuko) died when Tomoya was young, leaving his father (Naoyuki) to raise him. After the accident, Tomoya's father turned to alcohol and gambling, and held frequent fights with his son. One day, Naoyuki, again arguing with his son, slammed Tomoya against the wall, dislocating Tomoya's shoulder. Ever since then, his father has treated Tomoya nicely, but distantly, as if Tomoya and he were strangers rather than a family. This hurts Tomoya more than his previous relationship with his father, and the awkwardness of returning home leads Tomoya constantly to stay out all night. Additionally, the injury disables Tomoya from participating in his basketball club, and pushes him to distance himself from his school and other activities. Thus his delinquent life begins. Tomoya's good friend Youhei Sunohara, who got thrown out of the soccer club for a dispute, is also a delinquent and often hangs out in his dorm room with Tomoya doing nothing much.

The story opens on Monday April 14, 2003 at the beginning of the school year,[1] when Tomoya meets by chance Nagisa Furukawa, a soft-spoken girl one year older than him who is repeating her last year in high school due to being sick much of the previous year. Her goal is to join the drama club which she was unable to do due to her sickness, but they find that the drama club was disbanded after the few remaining members graduated. Since Tomoya has a lot of time to kill, he starts to help Nagisa in reforming the drama club. During this period, Tomoya meets and hangs out with several other girls who he gets to know well and help with their individual problems.

Could not pay me to watch that.
