Yes, let's bankrupt the country even more by implementing a system that would cost us trillions to build, and even more to maintain.

Take the airplane for long distance, or the bus/car to near places. Trains don't belong in America.

    Have you ever used Amtrak?
    It's slow as fuck.
They don't own the rails they use either, so any cargo trains have right-of-way.
    >> Anonymous 09/20/09(Sun)00:12 No.5887096
These trains would have to be city to city with no stops, with 400mph+ speeds.

Any stop slows the train down to the point where it's useless. If it isn't faster than a plane no one will use it unless tickets cost less than $20. Just like our current system.

LOL Amtrak. $214 ticket from Atlanta to NYC and it takes 8x longer than a plane which costs $74 one way (Airtran).

Expand freight rail if you want to save oil.

The only problem I see is that it'll likely involve Federal moneys, and then it'll get canceled after Phase 1. So the whole country will subsidize some high-speed rail for LA-San Fran, Boston-NY-DC, and Chicago-Mineapolis-Detroit-St. Louis, then cancel everything else.

Highways are a better way to transport goods and people to specific destinations.

Rail lines are also crazy easy to target in a war (lol WWII Germany) and roads have incredible resilience to attack with many back up routes for trucks.

Freight rail is a lot cheaper for transporting things from city to city, just not to more obscure destinations, thus we need a good highway system to make the delivery to the actual store/door.

This morning I was awoken by my alarm clock powered by electricity generated by the public power monopoly regulated by the US department of energy.

I then took a shower in the clean water provided by the municipal water utility.

After that, I turned on the TV to one of the FCC regulated channels to see what the national weather service of the national oceanographic and atmospheric administration determined the weather was going to be like using satellites designed, built, and launched by the national aeronautics and space administration. I watched this while eating my breakfast of US department of agriculture inspected food and taking the drugs which have been determined as safe by the food and drug administration.

At the appropriate time as regulated by the US congress and kept accurate by the national institute of standards and technology and the US naval observatory, I get into my national highway traffic safety administration approved automobile and set out to work on the roads built by the local, state, and federal departments of transportation, possibly stopping to purchase additional fuel of a quality level determined by the environmental protection agency, using legal tender issued by the federal reserve bank. On the way out the door I deposit any mail I have to be sent out via the US postal service and drop the kids off at the public school.

It costs ~$15 in gas to round trip to NYC and back from Waterbury CT. Train schedules are shit-tier in CT anyways.

Plus, how the hell would you take a flight from Boston to NYC or VT to NYC? Boston to NYC would be a waste of time, it would be faster to drive the 4.5 hours than to drive to an airport, get on the plane, then fly, then get a taxi, and get driven 30 minutes into the city.

The South has plenty of rail infrastructure, but it isn't used for commercial passenger traffic as much, since things are more spread out in the South. Carrying passengers really made more sense in the Northeast, where you have a lot of large metropolitan areas which aren't that far away from each other.

I'm not arguing for more government. I'm arguing that if you (and all the others that don't pay) paid taxes, things the government built for the public would probably be better. I'm also not going to say that less government would be good. We need balance. There HAS to be a government. People couldn't function in a society even like this one without it. At least not everyone could. The government encapsulates the entire justice system. For example, if there were no government, you could go out and shoot someone for being an adulterer. Is that a crime worthy of being shot for? Not in my book. But if it is in someone else's book, they can do it without structured repercussion. Now, I could go out and shoot that person for doing something I believed was wrong, but what if someone else comes and shoots me for doing something THEY believe is wrong? A lack of government doesn't work given the way that humans simply are.

You know, I thought about the benefits of high-speed rail. I’ve been on the trains in Japan and they’re nice. They seemed to be a great substitute for flying across the country. But the problem is with economics: those trains were built with government money and they’re barely profitable. Worse yet, the airplane industry it was supposed to replace is now doing so badly that a private American company has to bail it out. The cost of bullet trains in Japan is being the world’s most indebted nation per capita.

A conglomerate should fund a bullet train directly from Los Angeles to Las Vegas to sucker in more gamblers and use that money to build more bullet trains.

    >At the same time government is not allowing private businesses to compete.

Assuming for a second that we're overlooking the entire local private transport industry, How? by providing services at prices that corporations could not compete with? there is an entire market of high-quality transport [eg limos, zipcars, taxis, etc] that is successful against such a market.

Against a public service, there will always be a private niche.

TLDR: /g/ libertarians are as isolated from reality as humanly possible

Living in Japan, legitimately studying the language.

I love the train system here, cheap, fast, and on time so often you can set your watch by it. I've also had good experience with the bay area rapid transit system in California, so I'm looking forward to how this pans out. I just wish they would run a high-speed line all the way from Seattle to San Francisco, but only if they can make it more cost-effective then flying. I'd be willing to put up with a 12 to 48 hour ride if it was cheaper.
