building a computer involves the following:

being super careful with the MB, as you can totally ruin it with static discharge

read the fucking manual (for the MB) so that you plug in all the right shit into the pins (USB, card readers, etc)

when you put the CPU on, make sure you do not apply TOO much grease
everything else is plug and play, plug in (at max) 3 wires (some optical drives have a 3rd wire/cable).
    >> Anonymous 08/01/09(Sat)14:44 No.5216815
    >>5216808

    You're trolling, right?

I have to grease my CPU?

The only thing I grease around here is my face.

    Also my french fries.
    >> Anonymous 08/01/09(Sat)14:45 No.5216834
    >>5216815

First, it's not really grease, however it's a lot easier to say greasing the CPU.

Second, if you don't know that much, you're going to have to do a lot more research and reading before you attempt this or you're going to fuck shit up and lose a lot of money.

    >>5216815
Well, you're either trolling or you should give up on this pipe dream of building your own PC. You're not up to it.
    >> Anonymous 08/01/09(Sat)14:49 No.5216869
    Also, and perhaps most importantly,

what "amounts" or "sizes" should I be getting various components in?- so I can play all videogames for a few years...

Is 4 GB of RAM enough?
How about for my Power Supply? Is 800watt necessary?
And do I have to ensure graphics card/motherboard manufacturer are the same?

Why? Its one component im not familiar with.

This isnt any kind of elusive or challenging science.

I just need the basics, and I can figure the rest out, as I go.

I was hoping you gentlemen might be able to help me, since Im almost useless, here.

Actually, I am also unfamiliar with greasing the cpu. We're talking about thermal compound right? That's probably the only thing I don't know how to do. I should just look up a youtube video.

    >>5216882
Well, if the one component you're not familiar with is your CPU, you have some reading up to do.

"Grease" is thermal compound. Using the stock heatsink is usually not recommended. You want to buy an aftermarket cooler -- preferably one that is compatible with your processor -- and thermal compound (or grease). After you install the CPU, you apply a small amount of thermal compound and carefully and evenly spread it on the chip. You then install the heatsink.

Don't worry OP. You just need to pick a processor and go to newegg. They'll automatically give you a list of all the stuff that is compatible with it. They only thing you will need to pick out is the case.
