How long would society/humans/life survive if the sun suddenly 'went out'?

The Sun doesn't work like that.

2-3 days before it gets too cold to survive.

About eight minutes, the time it'd take for the last rays of sunlight to travel to Earth.
    >> Anonymous 06/24/09(Wed)07:28 No.4845927
i reckon 10 minutes. since it takes 8 minutes for the light from the sun to reach us, i figure we get 8 'free' minutes. the other 2 is how long it would take everyone alive to freeze to death.

That's not how the atmosphere work. Most of the heat we experience as warmth doesn't come from instantly the suns rays, it comes gradually from the ground. It takes time for this heat to dissipate. That's why it doesn't turn into full-blown winter every night.

The food would run out soon. Lack of sunlight destroys the bottom of the food chain. Over a period of time, larger mammals like seals and polar bears would die out due to their prey disappearing.

2-3 days before it becomes too cold to live on the surface in any structure. Indefinite survival is possible deep underground, but there's no way to reach deep enough fast enough.

I bet some people could survive near surface thermal vents by building structures very rapidly.

Humanity would be reduced to a few thousand people at best. It would be hard to feed and maintain people with pure geothermal heat and no way to grow anything outside a biodome.

maybe enough to sustain a small population (you would need to provide light+heat for your crops).

However, once your metal/wood supplies run out, you have no way of replacing them. No wood (it's all frozen) and no way to get temperatures hot enough to make metal.

A lot would depend on how quickly we adopt nuclear power. Fission would be the stop-gap, but fusion would be the only way to get the massive amounts of power we'd need long term.

This anon has his ducks in a row. Nuclear power would come into emergency demand, and companies that manufacture electric heating units would be pressed into emergency manufacturing by the government.
Third world countries would collapse almost immediately, while larger nations would suffer widespread panic.

There would be a year, tops, before the remainders of humanity were living solely in atmospherically sealed bio-domes. As the temperature of Earth drops, wildlife dies, and water freezes, the atmosphere slowly withers away, and humanity becomes a sheltered society that numbers barely over a million, surviving in nuclear powered artificial environments.

    Sunlight suddenly disappears.
First day or so would be spent in front of the TV/Radio by most people trying to find out what the fuck is going on. When everybody learned what was happening, governments would try to control the population to prevent a panic and keep people in order. But with no sunlight, and with everybody knowing what this implied for our planet, widespread panic would ensue, and most people would stop going to work to fend for themselves. Within days to a week the internet/electricity/gas/water would be seriously affected around the globe.Third world countries' infrastructure would collapse completely, leaving all those living there in complete darkness with no power or supplies. Rioting and looting would occur. Those who could acquire food would survive, but not more than a week or so, before the surface of the earth became freezing and uninhabitable.
Those in more fortunate countries would probably have power/tv/radio for a week or so more, and some sort of relief effort would be set up to stockpile foods and supplies for people. Those who were lucky enough to get underground quickly would survive maybe for a few months. There wouldn't be enough co-operation to set up any form of nuclear-powered bio-domes like people suggest. These things cost money and resources, and the concept of money would all but disappear in an event like this.

Eventually those who were underground would lose the possibility of returning to the surface. With no sunlight, the entire globe would be totally frozen in a matter of weeks. You could not return to the surface without crazy thermal suits, the likes of which couldnt really be found underground where you were hiding. Most people would stay underground as long as their food would last, or until the intense cold penetrated the earth and froze them where they sat.
People underestimate just how cold things would get in the complete absence of light. Temperature changes brought on by greenhouse effect over the last hundred years would be nullified in a matter of days. Oceans would all freeze up, killing everything living in them. Eventually it would get cold enough to freeze the oxygen in our atmosphere. >> End of everything
