As far as I know, they still have several appeals open, so they're not going to jail just now.

Still, now would be a good time to look for alternatives to TPB.

The way I see it, Piracy is the 'balancing effect'. It is a natural response to price gouging by companies, and will exist in one form or another till the companies decide to play fair.

No need to hide in the dark when you can hide in plain sight. TPB alone has something like 200 million regular users (with over 20 million online at any time). There simply is no way you can prosecute so many people.
The content industry prides itself with having prosecuted 50,000 people over the last 10 years. But what is 50,000 among 200,000,000?
Well, 1 in 4000 of course, or 0.025%.

So, the chance of getting caught even if you run your torrent client right in the open are 0.025%?
Well, that's about the same as the chance that you get killed in a storm, die by accidental firearms discharge or choke to death on your own food.
In fact the chance that a significant medical procedure (surgery, etc.) ends in death is ten times as high!

I think I'll just take my chances.

I told you fucking morons to stop using torrents long ago. WHY DON'T YOU LISTEN TO REASON?

I swear, when we first started downloading illegal shit, if what we used got found out by the copyright owners, WE MOVED ON AND USED SOMETHING ELSE. We weren't fucking stupid like you goddamn kids are. But nooooooooooooooo, you got into the internets just when torrents were becoming popular and now you just can't let go.

    Goddamn stupidass kids.

    >I told you fucking morons to stop using torrents long ago. WHY DON'T YOU LISTEN TO REASON?

You do realize that the copyright industry sues people over torrents just because torrents are popular, right? If everyone moves to, say, IRC downloads, they'll start tracking down and suing people who run xdcc bots (or worse, set up fake bots themselves and sue everyone who tries to download).

Encryption was built into BitTorrent years ago. It doesn't help since IP addresses in packets can't be encrypted; the only known solution so far is to use a protocol with multiple interim nodes (like Tor), but that greatly decreases efficiency.

Companies sue pirates WHEREVER THEY GO. That is why you have to stay one step ahead of the companies. Use something else, use it until they crack down, MOVE THE FUCK ON.

You're not very good at this piracy stuff, are you? You'd better just go buy things legitimately with your mom's credit card.
    >> Anonymous 04/17/09(Fri)12:02 No.4128633

    >Companies sue pirates WHEREVER THEY GO. That is why you have to stay one step ahead of the companies.
Or you stay with the herd. Anonymity is only possible in a group, after all.
Filesharing on a global scale has long reached critical mass - The point where wide-spread legal action is no longer an option. Hell, even the RIAA has stopped suing except for "extreme cases" (Whatever that means). As >>4127389 pointed out, if you stay with the herd the chance of being singled out is incredibly low, even if they launch tens of thousands of lawsuits.
    >> Anonymous 04/17/09(Fri)12:10 No.4128693

Well it doesn't bode well, but yes as it has been explained over and over, the fight is long from over.

I would think the point is this judge is talking about his ass since I find most of my torrents through Google and no one is suing them.
