14 year old teenager, girlfriend's son, got D's on mid term high school freshman test

she asked me to disable his computer temporarily because he plays WoW too much

what's the simplest way to temporarily disable the computer with the least effort? the bios doesn't have a password to start up but it does have a password to change settings. my plan is to disable everything in the boot sequence and then password protect the bios. that should take all of 10 seconds

i could pop out the ram but then i have to keep track of it and keep it safe

i could unplug shit but he would probably figure it out and plug it back in

i could remove the sata cable to his HD but that's more work than fucking with the bios

    >i could remove the sata cable to his HD but that's more work than fucking with the bios

    Hurr

Take out his CPU, give it back when he bucks up.

WoW has parental control options though..if you know his password somehow..

Tell him to get the hell off the computer, or you'll beat his ass. He'll say he will, and then beat his ass for lying.

Then he will use the computer without asking, so you should kick his ass then too.

Then rape him and his mother.

    1) Unplug the power switch wires from the motherboard.
    2) Unplug the power LED wires from the motherboard and plug them into where the power switch is supposed to plug into the motherboard. (Make sure you plug it in backwards though (i.e. + to - and - to +)).
    3) Plug the power switch wires into the spot for the power LED (it doesnt matter which way around they are, this is just for appearance).

see the thing is, he's not that good with computers. he lost his WOW account because he filled out a form on a phishing site. he had a virus on there from clicking a link in an email. not a big deal, we were all there once. but he never fixes problems himself. he asks me for help or just ignores it. it's fucking annoying to me because i like figuring things out and fixing problems but he just lives with google search box not working (forwards to some 3rd party site) and he has the side of his case open so he can use an old dvd burner i gave him because the cable is too short to mount it properly and he's too fucking lazy or dumb to figure out what cable it is and buy a longer one. literally since christmas (when he got the case from his mother) the dvd burner has been sitting on the floor next to it with the case side panel leaning against the wall.

he just doesn't give a shit about doing things right. anyway /rant, my point was that i don't want to just take away the power cable. i want to do something a little more complex so he doesn't know how to fix it, which will hopefully irk him enough to try to find a solution or remind him that he doesn't know shit about his favorite tool so that he becomes motivated to learn a bit more about computers. i doubt it though.

Yes. Find a way to block the porn somehow, perhaps blocking his regular sites by adding them to the hosts file.

As for disabling his computer, disconnect the SATA cables from the drives (but don't take them away) and then perhaps disconnect the power supply cables from the drives. And another thing, block his access to facebook (by use of the hosts file), and also WoW.

But don't be cruel - at least let him use facebook now and then, or every weekend, and give him access to WoW at certain times in the week.

Also, give him a guitar or something. Maybe he will do something more productive with his time if given the alternative.

i don't want the hassle of setting up something complicated like filename-based blocking on the PC, and i don't think the router is capable of blocking outbound connections based on the app on the pc. it has no way of knowing what app started the connection.

Also you could do the hosts file or change sporder/sockets, or install linux and then set mbr password and give him only a user account so he cant install wine and then wow (although if he REALLY learns something he will learn to install software as a normal user, which isnt simple in linux.

    >of his friends he's the most well behaved
Just because a piece of shit in a shit-pile stinks a bit less than the other pieces of shit does not mean that this initial piece of shit is something other than a piece of shit.

Anyway, just open up the case, snip some important-looking wires, tape around them to mask the cuts, then close up the case again. When you want to fix the computer, just solder up the broken wires.

Kids these days won't do anything that they don't care to do, or won't do. The only thing you can really get them to like is by bribing them.

Or maybe the kid is fucking messed up because his mom is dating some pathetic loser. Obviously the kid, in the end has problems in some way or another. How about you ask him why hes doing bad in school? Talk with him? I had plenty of friends back in Highschool who played MMO's like WoW, Everquest, FFXI day and night and still pulled A's and B's.

Instead of doing backhanded shit, try and help him with homework, or if that won't do anything, ask him if he would like a tutor. Either-way turning his computer off won't do anything, as he will just find ways around you. Maybe instead he will just go out with friends and start hitting some drugs?
