    >KGB Archiver is a free, open source and cross-platform file archiver and data compression utility developed by Tomasz Pawlak based on the PAQ6 compression Algorithm. It achieves a very high compression ratio at the cost of time and memory consumption.

This is GTA San Andreas compressed to 64K. It includes KGB Archiver for decompressing.

It took A LONG FUCKING TIME for it to compress for me.

I have wondered for a long time if a certain program could be made. You download the program and a large reference file, the reference file would be something like 10-20gb. The program would work by taking the file you want to compress/expand and looking at the 20gb file for large chunks of data that match parts of your file. Think of how PAR works it would be something like that.

if the original is already heavily compressed then its close to random/psudorandom - so no part is any more common than any other part, so libraries of the type you describe don't really work - but I'm only a dabbler in such things.

This isn't a miracle archiver... look at the benchmarks and comparisons here:

    http://www.maximumcompression.com/index.html

Its cutting edge, but has some drawbacks - like requiring the same version of PAQ to compress/uncompress in many cases, and not providing that huge of a gain over things like 7zip for some filetypes.
