Will 2009 be the year of affordable SSDs?
    >> Anonymous 12/28/08(Sun)01:21 No.3033327
SSD are already affordable they are just small from a GB perspective vs HDD and that will not change in 09.
    >> Anonymous 12/28/08(Sun)01:21 No.3033335
large SSDs are for faggots who don't know how to properly do ramdisks
    >> Anonymous 12/28/08(Sun)01:22 No.3033346
Oh man, 512gb? It's going to cost $1,500+
    >> Anonymous 12/28/08(Sun)01:24 No.3033357
Mtron makes some good, affordable SSDs. They not available at newegg yet though. http://rocketdisk.com/index.php has some of them in stock.
    >> Anonymous 12/28/08(Sun)01:26 No.3033366
    no.

people will want huge drives for all the 1080p stuff that they're stealing. Many people don't care about the small speed increase they'd see with SSD.

Anyone who does care has already got some insane SSD RAID0 array for the OS to boot off.
    >> Anonymous 12/28/08(Sun)01:29 No.3033393
I can't give a fuck until they can last as long(LOTS OF WRITES) as regular HDDs.

    >don't care about the small speed increase they'd see with SSD

Aren't SSD's still a lot slower than regular HDDs?

    >>3033407
Superior Latency, the same throughput(unless you have a 10k+ RPM), and lower reliability.
    >> Anonymous 12/28/08(Sun)01:33 No.3033414
SSDs are good but fuck Flash and DRAM. MRAM is the futuere. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MRAM
    >> Anonymous 12/28/08(Sun)01:37 No.3033444
    >>3033414
Fucking awesome. Nonvolatile with the speed and latency of DRAM and the unlimited read/write of magnetic hard drives AND lower power consumption than Flash memory. Why isn't this being researched and developed harder?
    >> Anonymous 12/28/08(Sun)01:41 No.3033472
    >>3033444
low density, sensitive to magnetic fields

    it's basically scaled-down core memory (1960s tech)
    >> Anonymous 12/28/08(Sun)01:41 No.3033476
    >>3033393

They can. They last at least as long as regular HDs. You're just lucky with your HD, or you don't use enough to know what the real failure rate is like. Regular HDs only last for like 3 years, maybe 5.
    >> Anonymous 12/28/08(Sun)01:42 No.3033485
for the price of a decently fast 32gb ssd I can grab a TB drive

Not worth the few seconds faster boot time
    >> Anonymous 12/28/08(Sun)01:43 No.3033494
    >>3033472

Core store memory was used on the space shuttles (forget which one) so it lasted at least into the 80s.

    >>3033414
    >>3033444
Wait if it's nonvolatile and used for the main storage, is there even a need for having seperate RAM sticks? Could you use the pagefile as virtual RAM?

I have a Pentium 1, Pentium 2, Pentium 3, Athlon, Duron, Sempron, Operon, Cyrix, Via, and lots more systems which have never suffered a drive failure over 10 years.

My Pentium 1 had 4 HDDs in it, they were all in RAID 0, two died.
    >> Anonymous 12/28/08(Sun)01:50 No.3033546
SSDs faster than HDDs? Haha dude, nice one!
So how fast do the 'good' SSDs spin? With ZERO RPM. Now compare that ZERO to a WD Velociraptor which has OVER NINE THOUSAND RPM and you'll see who's faster.
Fucking SSDs are only good for the companies that produce them, because they can sell them to idiots like you and make profit out of your stupidity.
    >> Anonymous 12/28/08(Sun)01:51 No.3033556
    >>3033508
SSDs aren't good at random access, so they would be slow RAM replacements.
Not only that, but they wear down A LOT faster from rewrites than RAM does.
    >> Anonymous 12/28/08(Sun)01:55 No.3033590
    >>3033556
hurr he was talking about MRAM SSDs, not Flash.

The bus for HDDs is insanely slow compared to the ram bus. Even the fastest HDD connections can't even compare to what we were using for ram over 10 years ago, and will likely never come close to matching a reasonable speed to be used as ram itself.
    >> Anonymous 12/28/08(Sun)02:00 No.3033627
I can see them becoming more and more popular for the notebooks and netbooks since their power consumption, shock resistance, noise, and heat generation is much better.

For desktop machines? Nah, they're not up to the sizes that are going to be in demand. Just spent $150 for 1280GB that'll be in Raid0, that gets me what with SSD, a POS 32GB or something?
    >> Anonymous 12/28/08(Sun)02:04 No.3033657
This is an insanely misguided thread, beyond salvage.

    >>3033627
They are decent boot drives as well, but to make good use of them on a desktop you need for them to boot and dump to a ramdisk and occasionally sync changes to the SSD as needed. In other words, its for laptops only as far as /g/'s concerned due to their lack of scripting ability.

That wasn't what the mayans were telling us. They were telling us we'd end the foolish 12month/xxday calendar and return to the natural 13month/28day calendar. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Fixed_Calendar

Wow that's pretty awesome. We entered 2008 with 64/128gb ssds and now we're leaving with 512gb, in 2.5" form factors no less! By the end of 2009, they will be shipping 2TB+ SSDs. Your days are numbered platter fags.

I just bought a 500 gigabyte 2.5" drive from Newegg for $110. I doubt the SSD will be comparable in 2009.

Nope. 2011 will be the earliest.
