Why wont you be getting one in place of a regular laptop?
>ivy bridge i5
>intel HD 4000 GRAYYFIX (good enough)
>x86
Estimated price point of ~$1000-$1100

Tfw ill be getting one and claiming it under tax. Its for work purposes.

Business as usual, like a gentleman. I too will be doing this.
>>
>tfw my two year old laptop has the same specs at half the price and i already have a smart phone for mobile shit and a kindle for reading

why would i buy this? i hear the magnetic keyboard is splitting its casing faster than spongebob rips his pants and it doesn't have any compelling features other than that and a OMFG KICKSTAND

No one here has to justify why you'd buy it, in fact; if you don't like it; why post at all? It's awfully childish you know.

That's fucking why. Although in all seriousness, I'll probably be looking at getting a second-generation one. If they can hit the same price point with 10W GT3 Haswell in tow, it'll be good enough.
>>
>>29128183 (OP)
Because I can't actually have it on my lap because no hinges.

I seriously hope you mean x64
>>
>>29128183 (OP)
Because it's a failed abortion without any real merits and poor build quality. It's like Microsoft doesn't have the foresight to let several employees walk around with the device in a closed room and put it through its paces.
>>
>>29128272
OP here.
Why not just get a 1st gen. Then sell it as soon as you hear rumors about the release of the 2nd gen. It might depreciate by a couple of hundred but thats negligible

OP tell your bosses in marketing to drop the price hard, and I'll consider it.

I don't think that a thick, heavy tablet with short battery life is anywhere near optimal.
As a formerly huge fan of that idea of merging my needs into a single device, I realized that for heavy work conditions, a regular notebook would be far superior (bigger screen, better keyboard, higher performance - imagine an IDE on a 10" screen), while for actual tablet use cases like uni, entertainment and so on, a lightweight tablet (atom based for instance) with high battery life, 3g and active standby obviously would be superior.

>the term x86-64 (or x64) is often used to denote 64-bit software, with the term x86 implying only 32-bit.
It's one of those annoying things where people will scream and shout if you don't use naming conventions they're accustomed to.
What was the name agai... oh yer. Autism.

x86 is fine to denote 64 bit support.
>>
>>29128364
it's expected to have 8 hours thanks to the 10w ULV IVB chips in production for it. And compared to a full blown netbook / ultrabook, it's significantly smaller, lighter and thinner.
>>
>>29128456
Notebooks are already small enough. Any smaller than 11.6 inches and usability suffers.

Because I already have a passable tablet and a very powerful laptop, and I'd rather just save the money. Your point is valid, but I feel it doesn't represent the best value for my money at this time.
>>
>>29128456
It also costs 4-5 times the price of a netbook.
>>
>>29128507
I actually had some time on with the surface RT the other day and, at 10.6", the screen was almost perfect. I can see expansive multitasking being an issue though, even though the pro has 1080p

16:9 is perfect for landscape usage, where it fails is in portrait. However the people that use 4:3 tablets in portrait are doing it for basic tasks, what they miss out on is a true script reading design.
Reading books, comics and webpages on portrait 16:9 is best shit ever, especially if the weight and screen are up to a good standard.
>>
>>29128613
It's really not. I have a 10" 4:3 tablet, and the aspect ratio is both crap for watching video and very awkward for portrait mode reading.
>>
>>29128456
I think it's a great device for more casual users, but as mentioned before - for instance you simply can't use a full blown IDE with a 10" screen effectively = you'd need a real laptop to work on the go.
you still want a tablet? as you already have a laptop, why would you pick a 60% laptop, 40% tablet device?

I'm thinking of buying a pen enabled x86 win8 tablet for uni use (mainly note taking and maybe writing small pieces of code or using it to host a presentation). 16:9 would be perfect for me, as I have lots of A4 sheets I'd like to display and annotate with the device.

I totally would have bought it on its release day if they had included a wacom digitizer.

Still not big enough to get real work done. Combine that with the touchdumb keyboard cover and you have, well, a piece of shit.

>>
>>29128733
to be honest, i was surprised how well my touch typing ported over to their touch cover thing. It's got just enough "feel" to it to make it usable. It's obviously nowhere near as nice as a master race mechanical (which i'm using right now) and has the issues of the breaking attachment area already, but all in all, it functions well as a keyboard, no worse than a standard laptop scissor switch i would argue.

All in all, it's a compromise of a compromise. I'm sure that microsoft can deliver with their strategy, i'm actually all for touch based devices as long as they're in hybrid form and have an OS that allows that (of which, bar certain linux distros, nothing outside of windows 8 machines offer right now). I think i'll be getting myself a ASUS Transformer Book when they're released and that will ultimately allow me to decide how i feel about the "future of computing devices".

If i can take my tablet and dock it at home / work for more power, then even further, use an external expansion case (lightpeak?) to add desktop class components. That would be my ultimate device. 1 device that has expansive upgradability while offering all the best of 3 form factors. That dream is why i'm hoping windows 8 succeeds.

You're like a bunch of kindergarten kids on meth, squabbling over who's dad can beat up the others dad. Stay classy fags.

No one really gives a fuck about what you think, if you had your way threads would just be one huge circlejerk with no actual discussion. Just the fact that they bought their precious consumer device would keep the thread moving along, no derision, no criticisms, nothing.

OK, fine.
1. Surface isn't priced against he 32GB iPad, it's priced against the 16GB iPad, so Charlie is comparing apples and oranges.
2. Surface ships with the full MS Office suite and all of the basic Windows apps; the iPad ships with Safari and a clock. It doesn't even have a goddamn calculator app by default.
3. Surface has a built-in recovery partition so that it can be restored without tethering to a computer. The iPad relies on iTunes for this functionality.
4. Surface has a MicroSDXC slot and USB 2.0 port that can both be used to expand available storage, swap out storage drives ont eh go, etc. The iPad has neither of these things; that 32GB is all you're ever getting.
5. Surface can have content added and removed whenever you want sicne it's a real computer with access to the file system and a USB port. iPad has to be connected to iTunes to change the music, movies, etc. on the device.
>>
>>29129435
Also, he's Charlie "1.7 woodscrews housefires AMD is totally competitive with Intel guize" Demerjian. He has less credibility than FOX news, and that is absolutely a relevent argument against believing anything he says.
>>
>>29129541
Nobody fucking cares, because it's shit to use and far too expensive for what it is. Nobody cares about using their tablet for more than what an iPad can do, because everything else is more easily done on a computer. Microsoft cannot into product design.

They have an ipad and a laptop.
This thing is both into one.

it's not a restore partition, it's a feature of the os, anyways who really gives a fuck why are you restoring without being hooked up to a power source at least
>4

you can use remote and locate network stores

I can do that with an app even on ios
