I'll be doing the first "PMQ style" Q&A thread (details) on /q/ this Wednesday at 10:00PM ET. Look for a link in the global announcement area.

PS: You can hide these announcements with the [-] button to the left now. It'll automatically show new ones and keep old ones hidden.

Janitor applications are now closed. Thanks to everyone who applied! We received 7,500 in 24 hours.
→ TWO NEWS POSTS: "JOINING THE FUTURE, ONE COMMIT AT A TIME" & "BETTER MODERATION" ←

4chan now has a full-featured, inline extension. Read more about it on the news page. The extension is open source and on GitHub.
Some features are enabled by default—to disable, click [Settings] in the upper right-hand corner and select "Disable the extension".
In addition to the extension, 4chan now has a read-only JSON API. Crude documentation is available on GitHub.Our inline extension now supports image hover previews, and contains a few small tweaks.

What are the pros and cons of "upgrading" Windows 7 to Windows 8?
>>
there are no pros

/thread
>>
install gentoo
>>
Pros: You stay on the bleeding edge of technology
Cons: Slower people with special needs might find modern computing interactions to be a cognitive burden
>>
Pros
Faster boot and shutdown time
Options to have your taskbar on all your monitors
Better task manager
The default UI looks a lot better
The start screen is actually pretty nice once you get used to it

Cons
The apps and all of metro
>>
>>27552213 (OP)
pros

cons
windows 7 tablet edition istalled on a desktop
>>
Stuff does run smoother than on Windows 7, uses less resources, boots up faster, everything works on it without any issues.

Just get Start8 and you'll never be forced to see any Metro shit ever again unless you actually want to see it.
>>
pros: more efficient usage in a tablet

cons: terrible as desktop interface
>>
>>27552213 (OP)
>pros
general performance finally on par with Linux and OS X for the things people notice
-booting
-loading applications
-memory management (this is actually better than Linux now)

you still have the benefit of the Microsoft garden and all it entails
-industry leading hardware support
-graphics drivers optimized down to the wire for your OS
-games

>cons
Metro is complete shit
-it's retarded, don't let anyone tell you otherwise
-think of it as you would iOS, embedded alongside the traditional desktop, that's basically what it is. Similar restrictions on applications that run in it

You're furthering Microsoft's goals
-this makes you a bad person
>>
Microsoft Security Essentials is merged with Windows Defender.
Usage of "apps" when the store actually gets decent ones instead of desktop programs will increase your battery life due to automatic app suspension.
For ricers, ricing Metro to match a theme isn't necessary since every app already matches the theme.
Search, using a larger font and spacing between results causes higher readability, otherwise works exactly the same.
Streamlined apps run faster than your browser due to only including necessary features:
Think 4chan app, will run faster than 4chan in Chrome because you're not trying to support every Flash, Java, and shitty plugin/extension under the sun.
>>
I don't understand why they don't just add a setting to hide this metro bullshit. Shoving all these shitty tablet apps down our throats doesn't make it any less clunky for normal desktop users.

I love you.

The majority of new computers are laptops, and they'll all be shipping with some sort of touch capability soon.

this

I'm waiting for it actually, KDE supports touch already, and I want to mess with it also

I can only thank Microsoft for this

thank you Microsoft
>>
>Pros
Metro UI is good for having information fast.
Much faster boot.
Better handling of various accounts.
>Cons
Metro UI needs some getting used to. Probably will need some tweaking to get perfect for PC use.
You probably won't care for anything that Metro UI can bring you if you're the average basement-living /g/ neckbeard (which strongly believes everyone is after his data).

Not really an excuse to force you into it. Let the touchfags have their own specialized version of the OS, so they don't alienate half their users in the process.

>Let the touchfags have their own specialized version of the OS
Yeah, it's called Windows 8.
>>
question: has anyone tried just dropping in the explorer.exe from windows 7 into windows 8?

>>
>>27553033
That looks retarded. It's not even rotated to match the top taskbar. And the picture overlaps the taskbar. That is a really shitty hack.

Also: nobody wants that stupid fucking search bar anymore. People know shit like Spotlight and Dash exist now. It's 2012, about to be 2013 and Microsoft didn't improve functionality at all.
>>
>>27553513
>nobody wants that stupid fucking search bar anymore
Are you high? That's the only thing anyone ever uses the Start Menu for anymore.
>>
>>27553666
Put blunty: it fucking sucks compared to the way others have implemented search and launch.

The basic idea is still sound and attractive, and Microsoft, instead of adding functionality, scrapped it and put Metro instead.

Oh, I see, that makes much more sense, improving on it.

"Nobody wants that stupid fucking search bar" made it sound more like the entire idea of it was stupid and ought to have been dropped entirely.
