Cox has shut off my internet on two separate occasions within the past two or three months for torrenting and file sharing. The first time was when my roommate was downloading Mercenaries 2 via torrent and the second time was when I was downloading Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas via torrent.

Both times we called cox and they listed specifically the files we were downloading and we told them it wasn't us and they turned our internet back on, but this past time they warned us if it happens again they'll cancel our account and black list the person who owns the account (my roommate)

I just want to know a couple things. First of all, Cox has a monopoly in my city (gainesville, fl) so everyone has Cox, yet none of my friends who torrent constantly have ever had a problem like this. Why us?

Secondly, what is safe to download? Can I still use rapidshare to get music and movies? What about programs like Limewire?

    pic unrelated.

    OP here.

Usenet? I looked it up on wiki, seems interesting, never heard of it before. I'm on a mac and it seems like I have to pay for the program to use it?

    RS/MU are pretty safe.

The only people who might find out what you're downloading are the admins of the sites themselves and they will most likely just blacklist your ip or delete your account etc. rather than notify your ISP.

Usenet>filehosts(rapidhare, megaupload, etc.)>private tracker torrents>public tracker torrents>shit like Limewire and KaZaA

I only asked about limewire because one of my roommates is not so tech savy and only knows about limewire.

Tell him that using Limewire is like going to a prison wearing a pretty dress and makeup. You are just asking to get raped.

Do what i do. Crack all the passwords of all the morons within reach of your wifi cards who use WEP encryption. If you live in an apartment complex or other densely populated area this should be no problem. Once you get those passwords, hope at least 1 or 2 aren't using MAC filtering. Now, download via their connection. I've only ever got warning letters from my ISP, only for NBC shows and Showtime. Now anything on television gets downloaded via the asshole's connection who lives above me and loves to stomp around in his fucking boots at 11 pm on weeknights.

Why don't you just buy shit you fucking stupid nigger.

God damn. I mean it's not like I don't pirate, but if you do it so much or suck so bad at not getting caught that your ISP has shut you off multiple times, maybe it's time to give up.

Usenet takes a bit to learn but once you do learn the ins and outs of it, its god tier. Trust me, its worth it. If your security conscious some providers do provide encryption. I got lucky, my ISP offers free and unrestricted Usenet access.

because other people in the cloud can't be MPAA/RIAA/etc and have no idea what your IP is amirite??
    >> Anonymous 11/24/08(Mon)16:34 No.2748814
This thread is every reason why piracy shouldn't be easy. I hate BitTorrent for making stupid idiots like the OP able to pirate on a massive scale, because the more you dumb fucks broadcast your piracy and your IP to the whole world, the harder it is for those of us smart enough not to.

    Fuck you.

Get a god damned Usenet subscription.

    OP here

Just to clarify, I download about a movie a month. Fuck you.
    >> Anonymous 11/24/08(Mon)16:47 No.2748917
    >>2748853
That makes you a fucking retard once a month.

Guess what? Being fucking retarded once a month still makes you fucking retarded.

On a lighter note that doesn't involve me yelling at you, I do recommend you stop torrenting. Torrenting is just asking to be busted, and the RIAA and MPAA have proven that no one is really safe from their watch on BitTorrent. BT wasn't designed with hiding in mind - it was designed to make something as publicly accessible as possible. When what you're publicly accessing is illegal, it doesn't make a lot of sense, does it?

You need something encrypted. Many Usenet companies offer SSL encryption. Please, for the love of all of us, don't be stupid about piracy and ruin it for everyone.
