Situation-dependent.
Some
images work great as PNGs: Specifically, images where colors are
repeated and widespread. Vectors come to mind here. For this, their
lossless compression is great, and is very beneficial, as .jpg
artifacts can look especially bad on those. Small web graphics fit into
this category as well.
.jpg should always be used if the above
doesn't apply to your image. If it's a photo with many different
colors, and many fine details that really don't make .jpg artifacts
that bad, then there's no reason to use .png. Uploading a .png of your
desktop to 4chan, for instance, is retarded. There's no need for such a
large image, especially when the site is slow and shitty as it is. Why
post such a large lossless image when no-one will care if you post a
significantly smaller .jpg? It's not like people will flip on you over
the loss in quality. If anything, you'll probably be in everyone's
favor because you used the appropriate format at the appropriate time. |
