Outside of very specific science and technology courses I don't think there is a single advantage to using a laptop over a pen and paper. I'm lucky enough to go to a small liberal arts school where nobody would even think of bringing a computer to class, but I get the impression from friends that most people just dick around on their computers in large, lecture-hall style courses.

College really is adult day care for 80% of Americans.

I use my laptop and a directional mic, along with speech recognition and transcription software, to take my notes for me.

Unless the notes are posted online, then I just sleep.

An operating system that has a mostly stable *NIX backend, a decent keyboard and layout, and they manage to look quite nice too. And the magnetic power connector thing? Handy if you're a student, and most of the time your housemates are stumbling around pissed. It also makes all the difference when I can run creative software apps without exceeding the limits of my hardware, without a severe crash, lockup, or bluescreen.

This is from the Mizzou Journalism school, and yes, they strongly recommend Macs because they use a number of Mac-only programs, so if you don't have one you have to spend hours in the J-school mac lab.

I'm not a Journalism major, but I always figured Steve Jobs was fucking the dean or something, and that's the reason people gave me for the abundance of Macs.
