New HTML/CSS rolled out two weeks ago. Be sure to check out the new mobile-optimized layout for phones, and inline extension features.

We also added two new themes (first time in 4.5 years!). Thanks to seaweed for porting them over from OneeChan!

We are still working through a few bugs with the new code. Please report any bugs you find to newhtml@4chan.org.

What's the deal with smartphones? Why does nearly everybody owns one? I don't get it.

Contrary to many smartphone owners, I'm not under contract, and my phone cost me $100 up front. It's a nokia c3, and it does everything I need - quite well, I might add.

I'm genuinely curious: why are these $600 phones, that cost in the neighbourhood of $50 a month to own, so popular? What, exactly, justifies the costs of ownership? What justifies the other inconveniences, like the batteries that must be recharged at least every few days?

I can do a lot with them;
listening to music, 2-d codes 1-d codes;
comparing prices,
check my working hours,
write,
draw (with the right app)
play
oh yeah, internet
I can use them as a map
I can read on them (well, okay I've got a kindle for that)
it got a time-planer
with the right app you can actually learn WITH it
and there are some things that are very useful otherwise

Well I have an HTC MyTouch 3g old but reliable. Take hell of a beating and after rooting it to get rid of junk apps I will never use it's quite the power house.

I use it in conjunction of my small business (non-profit thrift store). Using to scan barcodes, search current market prices for my merchandise, web surf, get email alerts, update both twitter and facebook about promotions and receiving feed back and addressing my customers. I use it as a level, a metal detector, and a flashlight, and a credit card processor. Also tether internet if it gets knocked out by the rainstorms we got round here.

I also set up schedules from it for my employees. I just needed a solid android smartphones.

>>
£500 upfront
£10/month for unlimited internets/texts/more calls than I use
£10/month is basically nothing. the upfront cost was pricey, but It seemed to be an improvement on my portable internet device front. (fits in pocket, unlike my laptop, meaning I can take it to incidental places, such as the pub.)

People aren't poor like you op. I make $45/hr so 2 hours of work for 1 month of service doesn't seem so bad to me.

I bet if you look at the amount of people paid for cell service in say 1997 and adjust for inflation today you will see that todays prices are pretty much the same as 1997 prices. Smartphones are nifty, they're a decent camera, mp3 player, internet device and phone all in one.

Pay $84 a month is well worth it if you have a job.
>>
what's the monthly thing you guys are talking about? 3G?
>>
Galaxy S2 (Nov 2011)

>>
>>25225501
meh it's not so bad, you're only getting fuck if you buy directly from the big cariers. If you buy from a mnvo its cheap as fuck.

I pay 26.63 pounds (converted it for you $41/month) for unlimted text, web and 2gb of data. All I have to do is buy a phone out right. It cost more than your upfront plan here >>25224965

I never play with it.
I much prefer my trusty old Nokia and listen to the radio.
Only useful feature (apart from work related e-mail) is the ability to see train delays....but that says more about our train "service".

I think smartphones are fun if you never played with computers as a kid.

I think smartphone's are popular not only because of the aesthetic part, but because they are versatile. An average person might not make full use of it, just like /g/ and their i5's, but if you ever need something an application can offer at that moment, you're covered with a capable system.

So, convenience, aesthetics and versatility are the selling points.
>>
>>25224185
I don't know why people would sign expensive contracts to get one.

I however know why I like mine. It's a GPS, music player, web browser and mobile games platform all in one, besides offering convenient contact management and backups that also work with Linux.

Yes, basically it's my computer for on the go. Since I'm in a country with really good public transport, I can either do work or entertain myself on the go.

When I still spent in excess of one hour commuting by train, I of course used a laptop, but for those briefer 7 minute or so bus rides plus the 5-ish minutes wait at the bus station that randomly leaving your house nets you, this kind of a device is perfect.
>>
My iPhone takes almost no effort to use, and it does just about everything I need - and anything I don't have now I can obtain pretty easily.

It offers me a number of luxuries not present in dumbphones, such as the ability to play games, keep track of useful information, notes, voice recording, maps, a real web browser, database access, SSH / telnet / VNC, video chat, Twitter, etc.

Do I *need* those features to survive? No, but they're certainly worth the monthly cost to me.
>>
A smartphone is a jack of all trades but master of none.
It is also small and very portable.
>>
Retard, when you get a phone through a plan, the total cost of the phone is usually around $100. The rest of the plan costs are for credit.

What does me owning a smartphone have *anything* to do with my interests, or my previous computer experience?

That makes the inherent assumption that the smartphone is the first time I've expressed an interest. That's a totally unwarranted assumption, and it just makes you sound like a snob (I mean this is 4chan and everything, but come on).

>>25226495
What makes you think I didn't?

Furthermore, this kind of "hobby computing" wasn't available at 1) the prices and 2) simply the omnipresent retail value and 3) the level of service that current. Technology is always interesting and fresh, but it doesn't become wide spread until the value is enough to make it worth it for everyone to have.

The sheer amount of people is different though. In the glory days of the hobbyist computers, only those with decent amounts of money and an already-developing passion for computing even bothered with one. I bought my phone outright. No contract. I do internet mostly on my phone so it was the best package for me. I hardly ever use up my 250 minutes every month. It's a good deal, but some users took the piss by tethering their phones and hammering the network resulting in a change to the TOS.

(Or one than you can run an LOD into an amp that isn't an iPhone?)

I use mine for running my business since I travel all over for fun and don't want to bring a laptop everywhere. I come back to the states every year to shoot content for my website, then process updates for my website while I'm here visiting family, then automate updates for the year, then head back out to travel more.

Yea, browsing the web isn't ideal on a phone, but it werks and weighs a fraction of what a laptop does. I use it for translation, gps, and finding stuff with online maps. I'm on a motorcycle too, so space is at a premium. Plus I'd have to lug a laptop with me to prevent it from being stolen. I just slip the phone in my pocket.

There's only one worthwhile RAZR, the RAZR MAXX. The standard RAZR sucks and the MAXX has great battery life but nothing else really going for it. The problem is not just the lack of updates, but that Motorola locks their phones down tight so it's much more difficult to install custom roms yourself.

The other thing is the RAZR MAXX and Galaxy Nexus both have 2011 specs. The GN has the same GPU as the original Galaxy S from 2010.

I don't know enough to tell you anything about any phone other than the GNex. On paper, there are definitely better specced phones. But I can't comment on other factors like quality etc for other phones

Pros:

Despite all of the "Hurr pentile" bandwagoners, it's quite a nice screen

Cons:
Camera is shit
Battery life isn't great (fixed with a custom rom like CM9 or AOKP)
Volume is pretty soft, there are apps to fix it.
Feels cheap to begin with because of how light it is, but that goes away pretty quick.

Hardware wise, I can't complain, but as I said before, there are faster phones out there.

Actually here's something.

1. If you have a grandfathered unlimited data plan now, buy another phone now because starting sometime this summer they will not allow you to keep your unlimited data if you buy a new phone with a contract renewal. You'd have to buy a phone for full price to keep it.
2. If you don't care, you can wait until the Droid Fighter comes out. Should basically be an upgraded RAZR MAXX with a larger 720p screen.

Chances are the Droid Fighter will go on sale a couple days after the change to grandfathered unlimited data happens.

One nice thing is that the Galaxy Nexus is only $50 with a contract renewal through Wirefly or Amazon Wireless.

Unfortunately Verizon doesn't offer unlimited data anymore, so new customers can get 2GB for $30 a month. Also Verizon has announced that current unlimited data customers will lose unlimited data when they upgrade, so in a year or so I'll probably just switch carriers.

murikan plans are retardedly expensive, and the carriers all collude to make sure they stay that way

Standard smartphone plans (with 400-700 minutes of talk time, unlimited texting, and 2-4 GB of data) cost $70-$80 a month. Family plans are $120-$150 for the first two lines and $30-40 for each additional line, depending on the carrier.

Think about it less like a phone and more like a mini tablet computer with video camera that you can take everywhere that also has phone features.

The other stuff is more important than the phone aspect. With the Note, they take precedent over the phone aspect, and that is why the Note is the best smartphone. You will use the other stuff more than you will be making phonecalls.

Touch screens disgust me. I carry a laptop with me everywhere.

Which raises the question: If we can make an ultrathin notebook, why don't we fold it up more than once? The only issue I see is the screen, but won't OLEDs fix this for me?

You could make the same argument about computers, or anything else really. All cars should be electronically limited to 65 mph, no one needs a powerful graphics card or a powerful CPU or more than 4 GB of RAM. Some people don't care, others do care and want a faster phone.

Those of us who care for our possessions instead of being a clumsy idiot prefer something a little faster and nicer than a shitty Wildfire.

Well, the other thing is that in the US you'll pay the same monthly rate whether you get a nice phone or a shitty one, so you may as well get the nice one because the extra cost is minimal. That's only the case for regular plans though, not PAYG. PAYG is great for poorfags.

His reasoning for the phone is that it already has a solid case, you told him to get a shitty phone and put it into an aftermarket case in a context that makes it sound like you're implying it would give the same result.

You should have said "Or you could get a shitty phone and put it in an aftermarket case if you want something solid and cheaper".

Again, go back to school and learn how to use English properly.

Generally it's up to the host to entertain the guest, even if the guest showed up on their own accord.
