New HTML/CSS rolled out two weeks ago. Be sure to check out the new mobile-optimized layout for phones, and inline extension features.

We also added two new themes (first time in 4.5 years!). Thanks to seaweed for porting them over from OneeChan!

We are still working through a few bugs with the new code. Please report any bugs you find to newhtml@4chan.org.

>TV Networks Say You're Breaking The Law When You Skip Commercials

>Television networks are having a busy month trying to stamp out new TV-watching technology, including telling a court that skipping a commercial while watching a recorded show is illegal. Yesterday, Fox, NBC, and CBS all sued Dish Network over its digital video recorder with automatic commercial-skipping.

You filthy un-American Communist commercial-skipping pirates.

Everything on TV is shit, so for the past couple years I've only been watching anime and movies.

Networks are probably trying to blame poor viewership on piracy, just like the recording industry, when it's actually just shitty content.

maybe they should spend less money on advertising and more money on creating a product that is worth my money

In the UK we've had things like Sky+ for years and years, basically a PVR box and you can fastforward past the adverts.

Make ads:
-the same volume as the rest of the shows
-an advertisement, not something that tries to be a fucking joke
-a time limit of one minute per commercial
-commercials that only repeat every few hours

I don't even own a TV because commercials annoy me so much. They're obnoxious, annoying, unfunny irritations that blow my ears out that I'm forced to re-watch every 5 minutes, it rapidly becomes grating.

By the 6th commercial break in a 20-minute show, I'm tired of the 3 or 4 commercials that are repeating, sometimes you will get the same ad multiple times in one break.
>>
>>25107252
Uh, that headline is so wrong.
They aren't suing because of the skipping itself, but because Dish makes it supereasy and advertises it as a feature.
Dish also has contracts with the tv-station to be allowed to use their tv-streams for their satellite-service.

If ads are so important, then why do services like Netflix do so well?

How many more decades is it going to take for companies to realise that they make more money by serving us, rather than trying to use us?
A good waiter gets a bigger tip, people are willing to pay more for better services, and many people are migrating from traditional media that tries to pressure and force them to do things their way, towards companies that respect their rights, and better fulfill their needs.

On-Demand media is a great example of this, the services they provide are cheaper, faster, more reliable and afford the client more choice than traditional media, but despite being cheaper, they're booming right now, and making more money in the long run. Ten $5 sales are better than one $20 sale.

Yet again old media, established companies, corporations that are already rich, try to cock-block anything that goes against their established business model in a world where information is changing, it's value, it's availability, with their legal departments, making it worse for everyone in the process.

They have to adapt, they can't prop up their businesses with old money, they can't try and block every law and technological advancement they don't like.
>>
The only TV I watch is the BBC. Adverts annoy the fuck outta me. I don't mind paying a TV license if it keeps me from watching ads every 10 minutes.

They dont have to pay to upkeep an infrastructure like cable/TV companies do. So they can live with their low costs because they ride off the back of other companies.
>>
The problem with this is that it's on Dish. People pay for it, it's not free. Dish pays the networks that it carries.
They're getting paid regardless. The networks are just being greedy and trying to get EXTRA pay out of it.

Internet = watch any show or movie you want, when you want, on your terms, pause when you like, no intrusive, sanity-destroying ads.

Back in 1984 (MGM v Sony, aka "the Sony Betamax decision") the US Supreme Court determined it's perfectly fine to record a show in order to watch it at another time. "Time shifting" was the term used, and one of the justices cited it as an example of a NON-infringing use of a VCR.
So that part is already settled. The issue here is with a device that automatically skips commercials.

This. Once the president signs the ruling into law, he will transfer executive, legislative, and judiciary power over to the media.
>>

Exactly. And that's why we, as consumers, have an obligation to provide advertisers with our personal data and preferences so advertisements can be tailored towards us.

The minor disturbance in privacy is worth it when one considers the better advertising that will come out of user tracking. Besides, if you need privacy you're most likely a disgusting paedophile.

Sadly true. The media executives will use their new-found political power to conquer the rest of the world, discover the legandary Debashish Bhattacharya, embrace his celestial sitar music, and become immortal deities over the universe.

I hate to say this, but you're right. Once they become immoral deities, they will then transcend the multidimensional planes, and conquer those as well. We cannot let them win that judiciary ruling.

TV Networks don't understand the difference between "crime" and "infringement". A crime is an act committed with a victim and is tried in criminal court--like murder, robbery, etc. An infringement is a civil case and is taken before a civil court to file for remedy (damages).

They can't even show where anyone should have to remedy them, much less would be a crime.

>The issue here is with a device that automatically skips commercials.

well, according to that ruling, its only legal when its done by the consumer, meaning, that this automated process, not initiated by the consumer is what is up for review/judgement. I dont watch ads anyways, and I dont feel that I should have to watch ads when I pay for a service. Ads should support OTA free broadcasts, and not be in pay-tv services like cable at all. Also, ad time is getting stupid now. I record an hour long show(well, its in an hour time slot), and after skipping all the ads, its only 24 minutes long. fucking wasted space, and the network exec who thought of that should be castrated and then hung in public.

More shows, less ads, otherwise, ads will continue to be skipped.

the sky box would not be allowed in it's current state as it has a feature to "keep" recorded programs by playing them all through allowing you to record them onto a DVD recorder or similar.

despite all the easier ways like USB transfer, I would think this would be contentious because it's specifically for that.

we that know enough TECHNOLOGY should be really really silent about these metters. Another example of how Internet based media would be for the better. People wouldn't skip commercials on internet TV because they wouldn't need to record what's already on demand for them on a website.

Free video games with ads and cash shops that aren't p2w work as well.

Since every where is going to be wireless soon music with the very occasional ad like Pandora does is also available. You can even make the music available for offline use for free eventually because that would only be in the rare occasion.

This works for books and pretty much everything else as well too.
>>
>>25112227
