>TV Networks Say You're Breaking The Law When You Skip Commercials>Television networks are having a busy month trying to stamp out new TV-watching technology, including telling a court that skipping a commercial while watching a recorded show is illegal. Yesterday, Fox, NBC, and CBS all sued Dish Network over its digital video recorder with automatic commercial-skipping.You filthy un-American Communist commercial-skipping pirates.https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2012/05/tv-networks-say-youre-breaking-law-when-you-skip-commercials

America has lost its shit. There's nothing that comes out of that hell hole that doesn't sound like a bad Simpson's joke.
>viewers were infringing copyright when they skipped ads during playback, that skipping "robs the advertisers,"lol
Seriously? These fucking media goons need to be slapped back into their place; they're getting way too big for their own shoes. Fucking cunts.
How are TV networks supposed to make money and then commission and produce with that money new shows if they can't sell advertising?
TV is going to die anyway in the next 10 years. That being said this article did rustle my jimmies.
Is this nigger serious? We were joking about people saying that adblock was piracy a few days ago, people said "skipping commercials is piracy!" as a joke and NOW THIS?HAH@
I don't buy anything advertised on television anyway. What's the difference?
I stopped watching TV years ago, but OK.

>>25107428thisnothing worthwhile on TV anywayIf I ever want to see a TV show I just buy the DVDs/BluRays or use netflix / whatever
Everything on TV is shit, so for the past couple years I've only been watching anime and movies.Networks are probably trying to blame poor viewership on piracy, just like the recording industry, when it's actually just shitty content.
>>25107444maybe they should spend less money on advertising and more money on creating a product that is worth my money
Before you know it TV networks will have us glued to our chairs so we don't get up and take piss during commercials, god forbid we brake the law while taking a piss.
>2012>watching jewish tv stationsshiggy diggy
In the UK we've had things like Sky+ for years and years, basically a PVR box and you can fastforward past the adverts. Are you telling me not a single PVR in the USA can't fast forward?
actually piracy isn't a crimeit's a civil offence, and can only be pursued under certain circumstances
>>25107472read the article you fucking retard. they can fast forward, the networks are saying it is a crime. wouldn't be much of a crime if it wasn't happening, would it?you guys really are all inbred.

Make ads:-the same volume as the rest of the shows-an advertisement, not something that tries to be a fucking joke-a time limit of one minute per commercial-commercials that only repeat every few hoursI don't even own a TV because commercials annoy me so much. They're obnoxious, annoying, unfunny irritations that blow my ears out that I'm forced to re-watch every 5 minutes, it rapidly becomes grating. If ads are so important, then why do services like Netflix do so well? How many more decades is it going to take for companies to realise that they make more money by serving us, rather than trying to use us?A good waiter gets a bigger tip, people are willing to pay more for better services, and many people are migrating from traditional media that tries to pressure and force them to do things their way, towards companies that respect their rights, and better fulfill their needs.On-Demand media is a great example of this, the services they provide are cheaper, faster, more reliable and afford the client more choice than traditional media, but despite being cheaper, they're booming right now, and making more money in the long run. Ten $5 sales are better than one $20 sale. Yet again old media, established companies, corporations that are already rich, try to cock-block anything that goes against their established business model in a world where information is changing, it's value, it's availability, with their legal departments, making it worse for everyone in the process. They have to adapt, they can't prop up their businesses with old money, they can't try and block every law and technological advancement they don't like.
The only TV I watch is the BBC. Adverts annoy the fuck outta me. I don't mind paying a TV license if it keeps me from watching ads every 10 minutes.Oh, BBC Radio stations too, thank God there are no obnoxious adverts played every 15 minutes.

>>25107785>If ads are so important, then why do services like Netflix do so well? They dont have to pay to upkeep an infrastructure like cable/TV companies do. So they can live with their low costs because they ride off the back of other companies.
The problem with this is that it's on Dish. People pay for it, it's not free. Dish pays the networks that it carries. They're getting paid regardless. The networks are just being greedy and trying to get EXTRA pay out of it.
>>25107802taxmasters can help with that
>>25107866Sure, TV Stations have to pay upkeep on the antenna arrays and Netflix doesn't. But the flip-side is that Netflix has to pay upkeep on server farms and TV Stations don't.

TV Networks don't understand the difference between "crime" and "infringement". A crime is an act committed with a victim and is tried in criminal court--like murder, robbery, etc. An infringement is a civil case and is taken before a civil court to file for remedy (damages). They can't even show where anyone should have to remedy them, much less would be a crime.
>>25108228>The issue here is with a device that automatically skips commercials. well, according to that ruling, its only legal when its done by the consumer, meaning, that this automated process, not initiated by the consumer is what is up for review/judgement. I dont watch ads anyways, and I dont feel that I should have to watch ads when I pay for a service. Ads should support OTA free broadcasts, and not be in pay-tv services like cable at all. Also, ad time is getting stupid now. I record an hour long show(well, its in an hour time slot), and after skipping all the ads, its only 24 minutes long. fucking wasted space, and the network exec who thought of that should be castrated and then hung in public.More shows, less ads, otherwise, ads will continue to be skipped.

>commercials are playing>door bell rings>don't get up to answer it because you don't want to skip your commercials>door bell keeps ringing>fbi breaks your door down because it's illegal to ignore your front door>take you and your entire living family tree into custody through simultaneous coordinated raids across the country>flown to guantanamo bay for interrogations>forced to divulge information through rigorous torture techniques>turns out they captured the wrong person>get charged with wasting precious law enforcement and government resources>forced to pay for all expenses incurred during this time>look at your bill>one of the charges are $1,000 for a piece of dirty toast that was fed to you and thrown on your cell floor during your stay>get to the bottom on the bill>mfw there is a mandatory 20% tip fee
>Not using ommercials as a time to use the toilet or get foodI use commercials to my advantage.
>>25110492this would be nice if they just put them at the end of the programs.I had BBC breaks times exactly so I could piss just quick enough to get back before the next one started. thank credits for that too
we that know enough TECHNOLOGY should be really really silent about these metters. As soon as the tv networks start losing control over their content we will have to endure doctor who joining forces with the coca-cola man to battle the evil pepsi from outer space. They still hold it a pretty big chunk of this control because of the normalfags and that's why this commercial-skipping dvr is such a big issue for them. EEF is actually turding the punchbowl
I do the opposite.TV program starts, live pause at the end of the intro.Piss, grab snacks, drinks whatever. Sit back down. By the time the show starts I have 3-4 minutes which means I can skip the ad-break.
People still watch television? This sort of new belongs in a newspaper, and not online.
^ I love how people always come off with this shit, as if they never watch TV.theres no better way to watch sports than Live in HD.theres nothing better than lying in bed and watching shows you have recorded and drifting off to sleep
Britfag here, I watch TV only somtimes, ads don't annoy me much.
>>25111913recording HD from the BBC would be top class.pity I can't afford a DVR box with HD.and I've seen so many cheap ones but I couldn't stomach the terrible UI
>>25112071 BBCs HD quality hasnt got shit on Skys. BBC put out at a lower resolution too, at 1440x1080 I think.
>>25111783timeshift allows you to do that whenever you want.if I can find a box which can record 3 things at once, save and display HD and work on FTA satellites easily (with a working EPG to program)
>>25112107the BBC has 16:9 HD so it's not that.though the lack of HD channels from the BBC was a bit of a pain up until they made one for each of their channels.I respect sky for putting a 3D channel out though
>>25107605Since when?
>>25112210Since pretty much always?
>>25112210since censorship laws to "protect the children" make the broadcasters remove those sections
>>25112200 >close to 70 quid a month for 1 3D Channel>>25112200Theres only 2 BBC HD channels, BBC1HD which is a simulcast of BBC1, and BBCHD which shows HD content across all their channels whenever they feel like it.in the summer theyre brining out 24 HD channels for the olympics. Not even joking, TWENTY FOUR.
>>25107389That's none of our business. If a business model dies out, it's not society's job to keep it alive, nor is it society's model to find a new one for the affected businesses. If you can't hack it in the marketplace then you die.Why do America suddenly hate capitalism?
>>25107389THIS JUST IN: MONEY IS THE BE-ALL END-ALL OF LIFE, THE UNIVERSE, AND EVERYTHING.Oh, wait.
TL;DR:The Jews did it.
>>25107252Another example of how Internet based media would be for the better. People wouldn't skip commercials on internet TV because they wouldn't need to record what's already on demand for them on a website.Free video games with ads and cash shops that aren't p2w work as well.Since every where is going to be wireless soon music with the very occasional ad like Pandora does is also available. You can even make the music available for offline use for free eventually because that would only be in the rare occasion. This works for books and pretty much everything else as well too.
>>25112227they need that many to show all the sports.some are online. and some may be a 4 image type thing like they have to drive red button services.( all videos streamed through that are on other channels split into 4 with 4 audio channels)
You can show them who's boss by.... get this.... not watching TV.Trust me, you won't miss it.
>>25107600>If you don't see ads, it's lost profit for the company.Capitalist logic!
>2012>Watching televisionWhy? Do you want to become corporate sheep?
>>25112297No nonono Seriously.Theyre having 24 channels on the EPG, all in HD. 24 seperate streams. No picture in picture or anything.
>>25107587>Download tv show on usenet the moment after it goes off air>Finishes in seconds>Finish watching it before most faggots online can comprise a rational thought about the episode to post it on facebook
>>25112367No, capitalism dictates the opposite. That is corporatist logic.
Just support our world's saviors and we can finally be free.
>>25112333there are some good things on TV.it's all not available to me here though so I download it.organizing the mass of it I have is quite a stress.anyone know if there's a better way to name episodes than *TV show name* SXXEXX [*episode name*]?>>25112439that is just awesome.I hope they do something decent with all those streams after the games finish.
>>25112488That naming convention is against the rules of the coalition, any reputable site wouldn't allow them.
>Avengers budget: $220,000,000 (estimated)>Worldwide Box Office: $1,195,539,621>Doesn't even account for future merch sales, dvd, blu-ray, etc.>Company still says "piracy is bankrupting us"
>>25112534I know it is non compatible.I only use this scheme for myself. (I have two programs for managing this)if I put underscores it may be compliant. it's been a while since I read the release guidelines. (also I have quite a lot of them in non-h.264 so that would be an issue)
>>25112488source on that btw:http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/rogermosey/2012/04/since_the_start_of_our.html"So we're pleased to announce today that's precisely what we're offering to a range of television platform operators - that they can use the BBC's 24 streams in standard or high definition to create additional television channels through the BBC red button and their Electronic Programme Guides."So I hope they keep a few of them channels open after and use them for BBC3/4 etc.
>>25112225For real? Here you typically get the movie cut differently, typically some extended edition or something. It's kinda neat.
>>25108361>sweetened, flavourless
>>25107995I'm from the UK, we do all that shit too. There's so little difference between the US and the UK and the rest of Western Europe it's not even worth thinking about them as separate countries.
>>25108802I seriously hope you’re being facetious.
>>25112604Yeah, don't pirate or you'll get thrown in jail.http://www.time.com/time/photogallery/0,29307,1989083,00.htmlMan, I'm glad I'm not in jail.
>>25108935And how do they get them aired? I mean, isnt that illegal?
>>25112210Some stations cut out part of the movie to fit in more comercials.
Oh, how they piss me off. Someday they will learn.
>>25107858because thats what disney is.
>Watch BBC1>No advertsWhen I pointed this out to a friend of mine he didn't believe me. Then he went home and paid fucking attention and was amazed.
In the UK they've banned tons of adverts from kids TV airtime slots like mcdonalds and shit
Question is though, why would Dish even implement something like this?T hey work directly with the networks. Why would they do something that damages their relationship with them and reasonably does undermine the current ad-based model for television.
>>25113209It's great.>american tv shows>22 minutes long>bbc shows>29 or 58 minutes long
>>25113216I suppose they should ban the parents from taking their children there as well.
I only watch anime
>>25113286>anything but gundam the 08th ms teamhow is age?
>>25113304I give it a 4/10.
>>25113249No, but as children are not really able to make an informed choice about things which might negatively affect their health the state should offer some protection if the parents are failing.
time to bail, the anime loving pedos have arrived
>>25107472Old ones could actually automatically skip the commercials, but that feature got removed.
>>25107252That's complete crap. If I pay $40 a month for television programming, I shouldn't have to watch commercials.
>>25112234We don't. The people losing money do.
>>25113453retard detected
>>25107657US is on the verge of collapse financially, everyone is trying to get as much as they can before they leave for better places.
>>25108802>Guys! It's fine to have corporations, and the government monitor everything you do! I would take privacy, and freedom over safety any day.
>>25113468I know how the system works, and I don't agree with it.
>>25113209when I started watching it at first (when I got a satellite dish) I didn't realize what was different until I was watching top gear a month later and clarkson mentioned it.now it pisses me off when someone has itv on in the same room as me.
>>25113496>U.S. has been on the verge of collapse for the past fifty years, and it's only getting worse. I blame the more open minded view of American's toward minority's, and womyn's rights.
>give your country to jews>complain when they jew youoh you americans are so silly
>>25113735>your>give
on tv there are 2 kinds of shows when it comes to lengtheither 30 min or 1 hourthe 30 min shows last anywhere between 18 to 23 minutes, that's a shit ton of time once you multiply it by the amount of shows you watch.the 1 hour show lasts around 40 minutes. 20 fucking minutes per episode of fucking commercials!!! Now I like Fringe, but 23 episodes of 20 minutes of commercials! Nope.jpeg Besides as someone has stated, the tv shows nowadays are shit.
>>25113633>I blame the more open minded view of American's toward minority's, and womyn's rights.Of course you do.
>>25113800there's plenty good TV.it's just all the bad TV from the past has been forgotten about.I occasionally find a great TV show from now though it's an even number of them I watch from now and from 3+ years ago
>>25113875I like Fringe, person of interest, sad that the river was canceled, family guy etc. sucks balls now, HIMYM is boring, Awake got canceled too and it had potential. It's good that summer is here, Dexter will start in few months too.
>>25113905fringe is only getting 13 episodes for it's final seasonshit sucks
>2012>tvNetflix called, it said you're an idiot.
>>25113947Yeah, but they were talking about killing it completely. It's too expensive for them to make 60-80 mil per season and no one watches because everyone DVRs that shit since it plays on Friday. Reason why it's even having last season is so they can have a box edition of the show. I am surprised that supernatural is still around though
>>25113995DVR records a tv show, so it shows up as a hit on their counter.
I only watch PBS anymore. They also have the best online video service if I didn't want to.
>>25114012Hmm they were talking shit about it that it doesn't or maybe it was commercial skipping related. It's time for US to switch to real high speed internet and HDTV over IP, none of that made up high def.
