Despite all the hate it gets, Unity is great on netbooks, and perfectly space-efficient for the shit resolution they get (usually 1024x600). Sure Unity 3D is quite too intensive for a low-powered machine, but Unity 2D is perfectly optimized for the purpose.

Standard Ubuntu with Unity 2D should run well enough. Unity is actually rather nice, especially on low resolutions, but if you don't like it I recommend Xubuntu. Both options should most likely be painless to install and use, your UI preferences depending.

I couldn't stand a netbook, I had one from a friend that was new at the time in 2011 ish and it just couldn't play hd video even or browse the internet effectively with multi tasking even with the ram upgraded to the most it could recognize and a faster hdd and such.

I'd just buy a cheap small laptop honestly for a lot more power and barely any more price. Netbooks are pretty fail when even phones and tablets are ahead of them now. Linux doesn't really help too much by the way.

I put Lubuntu on it a few days ago after having ubuntu on it(which worked like shit, slow as fuck) and now it can almost handle 1080p video which is just ridiculous considering it's running a piece of shit atom and a GMA 950 or something.

Install Crunchbang, OP. I just did a fresh install yesterday because I was too lazy to do a Debian minimal install and configure everything. So far, it looks very newbie-friendly, and even has a first-run script that will automatically execute commands (or not, depending on your choice) for you to help further set up your system. You don't even have to use CLI to perform simple tasks such as the installation of OpenOffice or alternative browsers; it's right there with a simple right click. Needless to say, that actually kind of pissed me off, since I have no need for it - on the flipside, however, you should have no issues coming from Windows.

Also, don't install Ubuntu or Mint. Both are bloated beyond all hell. I'd tell you to do a Debian minimal install, but, honestly, just give CrunchBang a try, OP. Just the right amount of spoonfeeding to help you not tear your hair out, but minimal enough spoonfeeding as to where you actually have the potential to learn something (unlike if you were to use something like Ubuntu or Mint).

Listen to me, pal. Install Windows 8. It will be a long installation process, but fuck, it's snappy as hell, with even window transparency active, it boots up much faster than the shitty w7 basic pre-installed.
The only downside is that you can't run metro apps because of the low monitor resolution, but fuck them.
If you really want to run a lightweight distro, choose one with lxde as the window manager. I've found it to run the best on the 1005pe.
