How come multiple monitors are much cheaper one higher res monitor?

What's preventing manufacturers from making higher res monitors?

We have a storage format: it's called HDD. We're never going to get anywhere with this optical bullshit, and it's disappointing that Blu-ray is actually catching on. Digital download is the way of the future.

We need to scrap optical media and focus on bringing up the standard for Internet connection. The US should not be lagging behind South Korea. Then digital downloading can be used for 4K or whatever arbitrary resolution.

    Heat.
I'm not 100% sure, but I have two Hanns G's and my first one spewed out heat like a i7 980x (not that I've been fortunate enough to have that kind of CPU).

The second one doesn't vent out heat as badly and is brighter, but the screen still gets sufficiently warm and I rub my hand across it every now and again to cool it off out of worry.

The other possibility is that companies haven't wanted to do it for financial reasons.

so you have a 30'+ screen, room to put that screen in, and the distance away to sit? no? then 4k won't look any better than 1080p.

lossless would be a huge step as it would clear up all the shit that lossy compression creates. even with 4k video there would still be the same problems due to lossy compression.

Because 2560x1440/1600 is still new tech, and it has no mainstream consumer appeal yet. Game consoles don't support it at all, HDTV doesn't support it, blu-rays don't support it...essentially everything you watch on it will look like shit. The only use it has is for PC gaming and people who need all the screen real estate they can get, both of which are relatively small markets. As a result, the price remains sky high.

There is a limit to the actual eye resolution. In fact, the center of the eye, where you focus your vision is hardly 2megapixel equivalent. There is no point in anything beyond 2k in any circunstace. 4k is usefull for the videographers when downsampling, panning, etc, but not for actual user experience, but they want a way to bump the Marketing and forcing new development of new technology. That is how the capitalism works.

Howeve, i've workd with a 27" inch 2560x1440 monitor in a new Imac in the video producer i work on, and in fact the extra resolution Area for working is quite usefull, but i can hardly imagine a pratical computer display in size to put on a desk with anything beyond 1600p. IMHO The market should stop at 1600p, (4mp) 12mpx is tottaly overkill (4k).

A curiosity about view distance: I use a 42" Flat screen as screen monitor and only stay away from it about 1.5 meters. i found it very confortable at this distance. However, the 27inch apple display gets to small to red text beyond just 1 meter away.

30" 2560x1600 is the ideal maximum resolution for work, and fitting 2x 30" screens on a desk is not exactly easy.

    Price fixing.

27" IPS panels from korea are $350 while monitors using the same LG panels are $1,000+ here, and nobody tries to bring them to common market.

Meanwhile, the iPad 3 gets to have its ridiculously dense IPS screen (which is checked for even a single dead pixel afaik) for $600. Bear in mind the iPad 3 also has solid state storage, its battery, its Apple Premium Pricetag(tm), and all of its processing internals. By American monitor price standards just the screen from an iPad 3 should cost upwards of $5,000.

    Price fixing.

Refresh rates don't work the same way on LCDs like they do on CRTs. You are still dealing with a SAH-based technology. Liquid crystals set in a silicon film cannot physically achieve the same level of image image response as tubes of phosphor gas excited by an electron gun.

I hope that LG can actually deliver OLED in the fall, since it is a current-driven technology instead of voltage-driven like LCDs it affords intrinsic control over the duty cycle of the screen so it can match the scanning motion performance of CRTs if the manufacturer so wishes (at the expense of a shortened panel lifespan). Also Kaz Hirai who's now CEO of Sony says he'll personally oversee the revival of their TV unit and focus on OLED and CLED development.

Not to mention I'm still waiting to see what AU Optronics does with all of the equipment and IP related to FED that they've bought from Sony a few years ago.

    It enhances the color range.
If you have complete control over the lighting in your environment go for it.

As far as home theaters go if I had the money, barring the 8K$ 55" OLED TV LG is releasing, I'd buy one of those JVC projectors and a 120" screen along with some black-out shades or may be one of those Panasonic Plasmas.

Then hook it up to a DAC/AMP + Sennheiser HD800s so I don't have to deal with crap like speaker placement or room acoustic treatments.

    >The difference between 720p and 1080p is very visible
point is (to me) it's not as visible as the difference between two display technologies like TN vs IPS or CRT. i would rather be stuck with 720p on an amazing display tech than 4000p on a shitty LED TN with light bleed, color grading, and grey blacks.

Your argument is so bad I don't know where to start, so I won't.

i would buy a display or audio gear without personally experiencing it as long as the review/reputation was good enough

Enjoy your 4k upscale on screens you can't possibly tell the difference on.

This new 4k hype is all for the companies keep the market wheel and investor running, all for the profit

    Stupid capitalism.

It's not all fluff. 4k has tangible benefits in theaters sporting large enough screens.
2k as a film replacement is inferior.
4k as a film replacement is worthy debate from a scientific or religious perspective.

Jokes on you, I only go to see native-IMAX films.

With as much money as Hollywood throws at the production of their films you'd think they could afford to transition over completely to IMAX film stock. Seriously, how much more would it cost compared to the several hundred millions they spend every year on crap-teir CGI effects?

Give me an action/horro movie with loads of actual pyrotechnics, Jackie Chan-esqe stunts, animatronics, and other practical effects shot totally on IMAX.

Vast majority are still shot on film which is more than 2k

And really the theater isn't the greatest benchmark for standards on VQ. Most of the chains outright suck. I've seen home theaters beat the living shit out of them in terms of VQ. Sound is another story though.
