    caviar black

green is the really shitty one right and black is the best?

Reopen my old Astraweb account and leech till my bandwidth was slower than a dialup connection for anything but that feed from Astraweb I suppose.

All you guys saying: "I'll just put it in RAID 5"

I've heard relying on the motherboard's software RAID is a bad way to go.

What is /g/'s opinion on this? I've always heard that if you're going to do a large raid (e.g. RAID 5 +) you need to do it right and get the expensive ($500+) hardware RAID card.
    >> Anonymous 04/13/12(Fri)21:50 No.24199858

I would either use them for a file server OR do stupid experiments on them (See if they float, see how long one can last while it's on fire, etc. etc.)

    >> Anonymous 04/14/12(Sat)00:03 No.24201886
    >>24199838
Simple. RAID isn't something you do on a whim. If you're gonna do it you're gonna buy a RAID card.
    >> Anonymous 04/14/12(Sat)00:05 No.24201906
    >>24199838
IIRC, a dedicated RAID card costs a fair amount more than any casualfag is going to spend.
They also offload CPU cycles when running the array as opposed to the faux-RAID on the mobo.
    >> Anonymous 04/14/12(Sat)00:07 No.24201935
    >>24199838
    >>24201886
    >>24201906
This is why you use 100% software RAID that does not depend on the motherboard or anything else.

It's fast enough, and if the mobo dies under you, it's trivial to rebuild the array.

And no, mdadm does not work on windows.
    >> Anonymous 04/14/12(Sat)00:09 No.24201958
I'd buy a cheap mobo with 6 sata ports, an 8gb ssd, some mediocre cpu, a few ram sticks, put it together and install FreeNAS.
