  • Dear Londoners: I am in your lovely rainy city for the next few days. If you'd fancy a spot of tea and dessert,
send an e-mail to london@4chan.org with a sentence or two about yourself,
why you aren't Jack the Ripper, and include a timestamp.

This doesn't actually happen to the majority. It happens rarely to only the most retarded of individuals, and GNU/Linux individuals such as yourself focus on it and imply that it's a huge concern.

You can explode a scenario out of proportion, and you can even make one up. Doesn't mean you're justified.

Well I use it at work because of compatibility with a shitload of obscute accounting/payroll software.

Also, it's much easier to manage through Active Directory than linux and anything it can offer as an alternative to AD.

Actually, I know of no real alternative to AD for linux. Which makes it pretty useless in corporate environment for end users.

We do use it for server for example for VirtualBox to run virtual machines for access to banks that require USB tokens. We just attach all the tokens we use to a USB hub and connect them to separate VMs for user access.

I don't know about you, but most my peers that I helped to troubleshoot their computers when I was a teenager...we all ended up reinstalling at some point. It's not as rare as you think.

For your "average" user, they think "oh it's not working...guess I'll just put in the install CD and see if that fixes it" and then they end up either installing windows again on top of an already broken install, or they end up repairing it, or formatting the whole thing and then starting over from scratch.

So, it might not be so in your experience, but I'm here to tell you that everyone whose machines I've had to troubleshoot has at some point reinstalled Windows.

Because it works, well, with practically every piece of software and hardware a person could ever need.
Linux is for servers. Using it as desktop OS is a hobby for aspies that need to have things configured very specifically to the point that they're willing to sacrifice support and compatibility. It doesn't really work for you as much as you work for it nor does it support everything.
OSX is retard-proof and no one is really fond of the company outside of people into fashion products. It doesn't support as much software as Windows either.

There are less quality drivers and programs available for Linux compared to Windows. This is an objective statement and has nothing to do with personal bias. Linux is a joke on the desktop but it shines in the server realm.

Please calm down, this thread is about the mainstream OS as in for homes and small businesses. I personally agree that Linux is a great OS for those times when You want a cheap facebook machine for Your grandparents/older laptop (Ubuntu) or are running a bunch of servers because the beauty of the open LINUX (and other) systems actually is in the fact that when You customize it for certain tasks, You REALLY DO CUSTOMIZE IT, not just cut out some services and add others on top of a fat proprietary as is the case with windows which should just stay the good all round solution.

Keep up the good job, I salute You!
    >> Anonymous 03/17/12(Sat)15:53 No.23607547
    Windows:
    - WINE doesn't support the software I use, and a lot of the FOSS equivalents are inferior at this point in time. Those that are up to par have a radically different interface, and I'd rather stick to the tools I'm accustomed to.

    GNU:
    - Programming
    - Browsing without worrying about the browser crashing, or about malware.
    - Less of a resource hog, much more stable.

If you want to get things done (that don't involve programming), use Windows.

If you want stress free computing, use a user-friendly GNU distro.
